A Murder By Any Name by Suzanne M. Wolfe

Publication Date: October 9, 2018
Crooked Lane Books
Hardcover & eBook; 326 Pages
Genre: Historical Mystery
When a brutal murder threatens the sanctity of the Elizabethan court, it’s up to a hot-tempered spy to save the day. The court of Elizabeth I is no stranger to plotting and intrigue, but the royal retinue is thrown into chaos when the Queen’s youngest and sweetest lady-in-waiting is murdered, her body left on the high altar of the Chapel Royal in Whitehall Palace. Solving the murder will require the cunning and savvy possessed by only one man. Enter Nicholas Holt, younger brother of the Earl of Blackwell—spy, rake, and owner of the infamous Black Sheep tavern in the seedy district of Bankside. Nick quickly learns that working for the Queen is a mixed blessing. Elizabeth—salty-tongued, vain, and fiercely intelligent—can, with a glance, either reward Nick with a purse of gold or have his head forcibly removed. When a second lady-in-waiting is slain at Whitehall, the court once again reels with shock and dismay. On the trail of a diabolical killer, Nick and his faithful sidekick—an enormous Irish Wolfhound named Hector—are treading on treacherous ground, and only the killer’s head on a platter can keep them in the Queen’s good graces.

My Review
I love reading anything that takes place in the Tudor era. Most novels now are featuring anything WWI and WWII and those eras are fine but it has been a while since I have been able to read one in the Tudor era."God's bollocks, girl! I'm freezing my tits off!" and the book starts!

The youngest lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth is found murdered and left on the high altar of the Chapel Royal in Whitehall Palace. There are always threats to Queen Elizabeth and she is wondering why this young woman has been murdered. She enlists the skills of Nicholas Holt to investigate the murder. Nicholas is a spy for the Queen and is able to use his skills in his investigation. He is also the owner of the The Black Sheep Tavern.  Nick enlists the help of Eli, a Jewish doctor and his twin sister, Rivkah, and Kate, the owner of a brothel. Oh yes, I forgot to mention his hound, an Irish Wolfhound named Hector.

Then another lady in waiting is murdered and Nick finds himself in dangerous territory as the hunt for a killer deepens. Can Nick and his cohorts find the killer before there is another murder?

I enjoyed the style of Suzanne M. Wolfe's writing, the characters she portrays are so believable, I almost found myself in the streets of Bankside. The sights, sounds, and smells seemed to come off the pages of the book. An exciting murder mystery that I hope there are more of.

I received a copy of this book for review purposes only.

Early Praise for The Tiger’s Tale
With unique, intelligent and captivating storylines, and best of all,
relatable characters who you find are quite easy to develop an
emotional attachment to, I can’t turn the pages fast enough.”
~ Goodreads Reviewer
“How—” James paused and rubbed his forehead, wincing as his fingers dug into the inflamed sinus area. Across his desk, Bree sat, notebook in hand, looking at him with an expectant gaze. “How on earth do you get involved in these things? You’re like the angel of death, finding murder wherever you go.” He mentally kicked himself for the accusatory tone in his voice.
“I thought you weren’t supposed to assume it was murder until after a thorough examination of the evidence.” Bree lightened the mood with a wink and a smile.
James grunted. “A man is found dead in his office with claw marks on his chest and a dented skull. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t an accident.”
“You do know Lucky isn’t responsible, don’t you?”
“The tiger?” That’s what she was worried about? She and a student were found with the body and her first thought was for the tiger? “I doubt malice aforethought is part of a tiger’s attack plan, if that’s what you mean. Even so, we’ll probably have to put the cub down.” He reached across the desk and covered Bree’s hand with his own. “I’m sorry. For both you and Ning.”
Bree gripped his hand with her free one, tightening her fingers in a demand for his attention. “No, you won’t have to put her down. Lucky is incapable of producing those claw marks.”
“I know you think the girl had her under control, but the scratches are consistent with—”
“With something else. James.”

Shit. After listening to Bree’s explanation, his hopes for a quick resolution to the case disappeared faster than witnesses at a mugging. James pulled his hand from Bree’s grip and opened a steno pad. “Things are not always what they appear to be,” he murmured as he scribbled.

Seri's grip on the sheer mountainside above the wind-swept canyon slipped. But her right claw managed to break the surface of the rock and halt her fall. Thank goodness for sharp nails. She scrambled for purchase until she got a more solid hold. Her fingers ached but she maintained her grasp. She had no choice. The pale E'mani clones in their dark gray jumpsuits were patrolling the path beneath her; at least four of them. She couldn't take that many, even with her father's help. They had weapons and shields. She had a wooden bow.

Even with her magic, if it affected them, that was not much of a match. She could fly away, but that did not seem like the smartest play either. They might notice a flying fluffy pink girl. She did kind of stand out, even among her own people. Most of whom were grey or brown like her father. Speaking of her father, she turned to look at Jax hanging on a nearby rock face, his rust-colored wings pulled close to his body.

He blended with the surface of the mountain on the windswept peak. She on the other hand with her bright red feathers and orange underbelly was screwed. If the clones’ gazes rose, they'd spot her. This sucked. She shifted her grip to hang from one hand to the other and flexed her fingers, then repeated the gesture on the other side. Jax whistled at her in warning and she glared in return. Yes, she was moving, but that kept her from falling.

She wasn't as used to hanging as enemies paced below her. She was only twenty, after all, barely an adult by Avaresh standards and much less battle-forged than him. What did he expect? Her mouth twisted. Wait, what was she thinking? Her father expected everything of her, she was after all a Therotian. How could she forget? She had a destiny. What a load of-. Her clawed fingers dug into the rock causing dirt to rain down in a small waterfall onto the E'mani's heads. Shoot.

She didn’t mean to do that. She shared a startled glance with Jax who swore under his breath. He pushed off from the wall as the clones gazed straight up at them and fanned his wings to make himself a bigger target. But he was dark to her light. In the dusky sky, she stood out against the horizon. They raised their weapons.
