Innocence Lost by Sherilyn Decter Book Tour and Giveaway! @SherilynDecter #SherilynDecter

When you mention the Roaring 20s you can’t help but think of Prohibition and the mystery surrounding it. Today, lets step back in time and see how a widow copes with criminal elements and comes to rely on a ghost from the past.

Author Sherilyn Decter is visiting today to share her latest release, INNOCENCE LOST, the first installment in her Bootleggers’ Chronicles. She also has a fun giveaway she’s hosting for the tour. Be sure to check it out at the end of the post.

In a city of bootleggers and crime, one woman must rely on a long-dead lawman to hunt down justice…
Philadelphia, 1924. Maggie Barnes doesn't have much left. After the death of her husband, she finds herself all alone to care for her young son and look after their rundown house. As if that weren't bad enough, Prohibition has turned her neighborhood into a bootlegger's playground. To keep the shoddy roof over their heads, she has no choice but to take on boarders with criminal ties…
When her son's friend disappears, Maggie suspects the worst. And local politicians and police don't seem to have any interest in an investigation. With a child's life on the line, Maggie takes the case and risks angering the enemy living right under her nose…
Maggie's one advantage may be her oldest tenant: the ghost of a Victorian-era cop. With his help, can she find justice in a lawless city?
Innocence Lost is the first novel in the Bootleggers' Chronicles, a series of historical fiction tales. If you like headstrong heroines, Prohibition-era criminal underworlds, and a touch of the paranormal, then you'll love Sherilyn Decter’s gripping tale.

Chapter 1
Philadelphia has not yet lost its soul. It’s still the early days of
Prohibition. Sure, you can see the rot around the edges beginning
to creep in, but people, for the most part, are enjoying the thrill
of being lawbreakers. The times; they’re dangerous, but not yet
deadly. Bootleggers are still the boys from down the street, and
hooch still has a bit of quality control to it. Hell, the most
dangerous thing about the Twenties, so far at least, is hemlines.
Those short skirts are trouble.
You can smack your lips at the scandal of it all. Everyone has a
bit of an outlaw in them, don’t they? Many of the good people of Philadelphia are secretly thrilled to be able to thumb their noses
at a senseless bit of government regulation imposed by morons
in Washington. It’s a buzz to sneak out to the local speakeasy,
get in with a secret password, and tip back a refreshing swig of
illegal booze.
Ah yes, that inevitable illegal booze. Stashed in old warehouses;
some of them are by the river, some close to the tracks, all hidden
from view. Brick carcasses of abandoned enterprise, those
warehouses now bustle with new business. Risky business.
Bootlegging.
Inspector Frank Geyer leans against the brick wall inside one
such warehouse. Shrouded by shadow, he is a dapper old gent,
his walking stick resting beside him. The high shirt collar, heavy
woollen suit, and thick moustache over a neatly trimmed beard
paint him from a different generation.
The slow draw off his cigar provides fuel for his dark thoughts.
Frank doesn’t see the glamour that his fellow Philadelphians
seem to be enjoying; the comfortable danger, the shaking off of
the heavy burden of the recent Great War. He’s been trained to
recognize crime when he sees it, regardless of the cheap dress
it wears. Like a bloodhound, his heightened senses catch that faint
whiff of decay.
‘Death is nothing. But to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily.’ Perhaps Napoleon was right. Certainly, ‘inglorious’ is a good
description of Philadelphia these days. But have the bootleggers
and corruption managed to defeat her? Have we lost the fight
so easily? Have I been reduced to this: an old man standing idly
by? Maybe Philly isn’t the only one defeated.
Dark thoughts, indeed

For those unfamiliar with the author, here’s a bit of background on her.

The Roaring Twenties and Prohibition were a fantasy land, coming right after the horrors and social upheaval of World War I. Even a century later, it all seems so exotic.

Women got the vote, started working outside the home, and (horrors!) smoked and drank in public places. They even went on unchaperoned dates (gasp)! Corsets were thrown into the back of the closets, and shoes were discovered to be an addictive fashion accessory after hemlines started to rise. And thanks to Prohibition, suddenly it was fashionable to break the law. The music was made in America- ragtime, delta blues, and of course jazz. Cocktails were created to hide the taste of the bathtub gin. Flappers were dancing, beads and fringes flying. Fedoras were tipped. And everyone was riding around in automobiles (aka struggle buggies and I leave it to your imagination why- wink.)

Bootleggers’ Chronicles grew out of that fascination. Writing as Sherilyn Decter, I will eventually have a series of historical crime fiction novels dealing with the bootleggers, gangsters, flappers, and general lawlessness that defined Prohibition. The Bootlegger blog rose out of all the research that I’ve been doing about this incredible era.

Growing up on the prairies and living next to the ocean, I am a creature of endless horizons. Writing allows me to discover what’s just over the next one. My husband and I have three amazing daughters, a spoiled grandson, and two bad dogs.

Sherilyn Decter is enthralled with the flashing flappers and dangerous bootleggers from the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition. Through meticulous research, that lawless era is brought to life. Living in a century-old house, maybe the creaking pipes whisper stories in her ear.

He scratched his eyebrow, hitting the rim of his glasses. His body tightened and for some odd reason, his eyes lasered to my mouth, watching me chew with rapt attention. “Can you stop eating that strawberry?” He gulped, his eyes moving to watch my neck. “Please.”
My jaw stopped chewing and I swallowed, my eyes wide in surprise. What was up with him?
He sighed with relief when I sat the mostly-eaten strawberry down in the bowl. “Listen, everyone is looking for you.”
I took my glasses off and pinched the skin between my eyes. Okay, so the event coordinator hiding out for the entire event wasn’t the best idea.
          I could see that now.
“Yeah,” I said. “Okay.” I got up from the couch and stood, smoothing my UnNatural shirt down.
I began to walk to the door when Easton took hold of my upper arm. The air in the room stood still, the atoms surrounding us moving in slow motion. When my gaze turned to him, I narrowed my eyes. He stared at me for a moment, looking so intensely into my soul, I could almost feel him touching me. And I wasn’t talking about his hand on my arm. Although, his hold on my skin nearly bruised my soul. It was like his powerful stare somehow became tangible. It had fingers. Sensations. It caressed. Teased. Explored. Every inch of me. Too much. Not enough.
His breath hitched and mine did the same as I watched the Adam’s apple in his throat bob. I couldn’t stop gawking at the pulse in his neck and the twitch of his strong jaw. Everything about his gape told me I should pull away from him because this look could change us, but I couldn’t force myself to move. I liked the way he was looking at me. I liked the way it made me feel. I liked that he was finally touching me for the first time with something other than simple friendship in mind. Maybe it wasn’t want. Maybe it was anger. Either way, I liked that it was different.
Is it possible for a touch to say more? Could a simple touch tell me something I’ve wanted to hear for as long as I could remember?
I already knew the answer. His touch could, but there was no way I was going to break contact. We were in a staring contest, and I refused to lose.
Another beat longer, he let go of my arm with a jerk, turned away and left me behind.
I stood there, blinking in the empty space he just occupied.

Author Cassie Graham:

A chocolate mistress, Cassie Graham is a born and raised Arizona girl. Her sass knows no bounds and almost always has something kind to say, no matter the situation. She runs a platform of love and strives to bring those attributes out in every book she writes.

Cassie studied English and literature in college and has an intense love for fairytales. Go figure. Though she loves a good fairytale, she promises to always put her characters through the wringer for that happy ending. She started writing early in her high school career after an English teacher forced her to write in a journal. Four years and thirty-something notebooks full of words later, she found her passion.

Being a hopeless romantic, she found her love for romance after she fell in love at eighteen. Stories became a lot easier to write after she found her soulmate. Love exists and she's blessed enough to live it every day.

If Cassie isn't shoulder-deep in writing a version of a fairytale, you can find her front porch sitting with her husband and daughter, eating all the bread, gossiping with her best friends, visiting Disneyland, supporting strong women, listening to cheesy music and reading great books by amazing people. She loves binge watching Supernatural, drooling over Dean, Sam and Cas, and going to conventions. She also enjoys spreading love any chance she can. So, if you run into her, give her a hug or a high-five. She guarantees they're magic.

What do you find most challenging about the writing process, and how do you deal with it?
Everything I write is personal. If I’m not crying at the end of a session, I chuck it all out and start over. Now, what touches me might not touch the reader, but it’s how I know I’ve written authentically.
Engaging with the pain all the time is, well, painful. This writing thing is more than time consuming; it’s all-consuming. I suffer for my art. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
It does make writing in public a challenge.
When and where do you do your writing?
These days, I mostly write at home or in my office after hours. I have some privacy and some peace to engage the work.
But, I have written in almost any circumstances you can imagine. My laptop won’t open when I’m sitting on a plane – not enough room. So I’ve written on Word on my phone. That sucks… but you can do it. One year, when I was working adjunct at the community college, I wrote a whole novel in 20 minute increments standing outside classrooms, waiting for it to be my turn to go in. Phone again.
Now, when I’m in the crying parts, that can sure create some awkwardness. I’m standing there murdering my favorite characters and weeping over them and people are walking by giving me odd looks, maybe ready to offer sympathy or condolences, and I start to get a bit of a reputation.
What have you learned about promoting your books?
I am fairly shy, like a lot of writers. Thing is, you can’t be shy if you want to get your books in front of people. I’ve learned to always ask, be polite, and think big.
What are you most proud of as a writer?
I’m an existential psychologist. That’s pretty obscure. It can also be very difficult to understand. What I’m proud of is getting these dense, difficult philosophies out in accessible forms people like to read. Fiction is and always has been a wonderful avenue to communicate heavy ideas.
I published my first novel five years ago. Since then, I’ve worked on my craft every day, getting better and better at writing. At the same time, I’ve built deep, meaningful relationships in the writing community. As much as the words, I’m proud of the relationships. That’s the stuff that sustains you.
If you could have dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about?
I think Anne Rice would be really interesting. Isaac Asimov had a lot to say and was incredible voluble (if, perhaps, pretty into himself). Stephen King defined a genre. Karen Armstrong has a deep, expert perspective I’d love to mine someday.
If I had to pick, though, it would be Frank Herbert. Interesting as a human being, the definer of a genre, and certainly a subject expert worth mining. Dune is the model for my science fiction work. I know I fail to replicate the deep ethos underlying Dune but, if you recognize even the attempt, I feel like I’m succeeding.
Excerpt:
I was six years old.
"Father, I think I am ill," I said, in my tiny, piping voice.
"Oh?" Merlin said. He set aside the solenoid he was working on and turned his full attention to me. We were in the kitchen and my memory informed me it was identical then and now. "Why do you say so?"
"Look," I said, and extended one hand, palm up. In the center of my palm lay a milk tooth. It had fallen bloodlessly out while I slept. When I awoke, my tongue found a gap in my gums, and I found the tooth on the floor under my sling.
"Oh, you have lost a tooth. How wonderful."
"Then I am not sick?"
"No, baby, the farthest thing from it."
"I am not a baby," I said. "Please explain."
"Well," Merlin said, "it is normal for a child of your age to lose her teeth, slowly, over the course of a few years. New ones are growing in, beneath your gum-line where you cannot see them, and eroding the roots of the old ones. The old ones fall out, new ones grow in. Perfectly natural."
"Why?"
"Well, because if you were born with a full set of adult teeth, your head would be too big to fit through the birth canal. And if your teeth were not replaced with larger ones, your adult jaw would be full of gaps."
"Oh."
If he had left it at that, it would have been better. Maybe a lot would have been different. But he did not.
"Now, where should we put the tooth? On Earth, we used pillows. You would leave a lost tooth under your pillow and the Tooth Fairy would find it, replace it with a few coins. Here we not only have no pillows but no beds. So where should we leave it?"
"What is a fairy?" I asked.
"My goodness, but we need some books to read to you. We never planned for children, you know. Let me see. Fairies are magical creatures that live in the woods and sometimes at the end of nice gardens. Mostly they are there for young girls to find beautiful, but sometimes they are mischievous. They steal or play tricks or cast naughty spells."
"There is no magic," I said.
"Can you be sure?" And Merlin reached behind my head, touched my ear, produced a solenoid. "If so, then how did this get behind your ear?"
"That's a trick," I said. "Not magic. There is no magic."
"You mustn't be so upset over it, baby girl. Magic is just something we talk about to have fun, to explain things we cannot otherwise explain, to wonder at the nature of the universe."
"I'm not a baby and there is no magic."
"Please, just calm down."
But it was too late for that. I started to shout. "You're a liar and there isn't such a thing as magic. You shouldn't lie to your children. Father Christmas is a lie and the Easter Bunny is a lie and God is a lie and the Tooth Fairy is a damned lie."
Merlin sat back, narrowed his eyes, crossed his arms. I knew I had crossed some kind of invisible line and I didn't know what it was, why it was. He didn't say anything, though, and I couldn't stop.
"If there is a God and if there is magic, then bring back my mother. Give her back to me!"

CHAPTER 7
WES
“And you, Wes — what do you want to do with me?” Her words were heavy with a bold and unabashed hunger. And yet they held a barely perceptible tremble of vulnerability that made Wes want to cradle her body close, not to blend their flesh into one — although he certainly wanted that, too — but to protect this woman whose brisk exterior only served to shield the sensitive soul it housed.
Some ancient instinct deep within him rose, wanting to be not only her lover but also her defender. I wondered if she would allow me to be either, or if she only wanted me for the night.
He thought about how, over the course of his life to this point, he’d lucked out on love even while he’d done so well in nearly every other endeavor he put his hand to. But for some reason, he seemed to attract women that only wanted what they saw without attending to his heart. They wanted his body, but for one night or two.
Wes wanted more. He wanted a woman who would let him pursue her, romance her, win her hand. He wanted a woman who would fall back in love with him, with his heart and mind. A woman to share life with.
He knew exactly what he wanted, and what most women offered him? That was exactly the opposite of his desires, and he never said yes to that which was not right for him.
So he’d retained his principles — and also his virginity.
Wes swallowed hard. He wondered if he, inexperienced as he was, could give Ana what her dark eyes were asking him for. And at the same time, everything in him longed to try.
He didn’t know if she wanted him for this night or a string of nights or for forever. She probably didn’t know herself.
But for some reason, with her, he didn’t care. Unlike every other woman who’d wanted him, he didn’t give a shit about how long Ana wanted him for. He would take anything and everything she was willing to give him.
Because this connection, this pull to each other that they both clearly felt — and had been feeling for a long time? He couldn’t walk away from it. He wouldn’t.
He looked at their fingers twisting together, and then at Ana’s eyes, where need and doubt swirled together.
“I want to be as close to you as you’ll allow,” he said, voice husky with his own hunger. “I’ll sit on a bench outside and hold your hand and watch the moon rise and set, or I’ll take you back to my hotel room and make love to you all night. I’ll do anything for you, and with you, Ana. What do you want?”
The worry washed from her eyes, and her full lips turned up at the corners. “I want you to kiss me. Now.”
Wes grinned. “I was hoping you might say that.”
He slid his hands around her waist, fingertips digging into those delicious curves, pulling her to him so that their hips pressed together. She reached up to Wes, clutching his collar and tugging his head down to hers. He hesitated a moment, teasing, lips a breath away, exhalations hot against each other’s faces. And then he tasted her, plying her mouth with his own.
The kiss was soft and hard at the same time, and she tasted like sweet fire and cinnamon. Wes pulled back to press his lips at the corners of her mouth, then crushed back into her full on. She gave a little sigh and yanked on his collar, opening her mouth and teasing his tongue with hers.
He could feel himself growing hard, ready, and he ground his pelvis against hers. She must have felt his arousal, because she grabbed a handful of his ass, drawing his hips into her even more.
Without warning she released him and stepped back, leaving Wes gasping and blinking in shock. The sudden space between them felt cold, drafty, and he longed to return to the heat of their embrace.
“Is everything okay?” he managed, struggling to get his body under control.
A flirty smile flickered across her face. Ana reached out a single hand without stepping closer, taking his.
“More than okay.” Tossing him a last searing glance over her shoulder, she headed for the door of the con bar, leading him by the hand. He followed, eager and willing to submit to her control.
Wes let her lead him through the venue’s foyer and to the main entrance. Here she paused, winding herself around him and flicked her tongue over his lips before diving in for a bottomless kiss that practically made him see stars.
It felt like the kiss lasted a moment, or forever. When she pulled away, she said, voice guttural. “I want you, Wes. Tonight. Take me to your hotel.”
He closed the space between them, cupping her face in his palms and planting blossoming kisses across her cheeks.
And then it was his turn to lead her, fingers entwined, his low belly pulsing with primal desire, ready to let Ana make him hers.
