One look at Baby Doe and you know she was meant to be a legend! She was just twenty years old when she came to Colorado to work a gold mine with her new husband. Little did she expect that she'd be abandoned and pregnant and left to manage the gold mine alone. But that didn't stop her! She moved to Leadville and fell in love with a married prospector, twice her age. Horace Tabor struck the biggest silver vein in history, divorced his wife and married Baby Doe. Though his new wife was known for her beauty, her fashion, and even her philanthropy, she was never welcomed in polite society. Discover how the Tabors navigated the worlds of wealth, power, politics, and scandal in the wild days of western mining.

My Review
Elizabeth McCourt Tabor better known as Baby Doe was a woman who came from poverty. She married Harvey Doe but later divorced him for a variety of reasons including not providing a living and abandonment. She was from Oshkosh, Wisconsin but moved with Harvey to Leadville Colorado.

She met Horace Tabor, mining millionaire, and owner of Leadville's Matchless Mine. They fell in love and Horace tried to divorce his wife, Augusta of 25 years who denied him the divorce. He obtained a divorce in a different jurisdiction and married Baby Doe but was it legal? Because of their dalliance, divorces and subsequent marriage they were shunned by society.

They had two children but Baby Doe, still shunned by society but still donated money to charities. The Tabor's were rich in silver and with the repeal of the Silver Act, Horace lost his fortune and had to take a job as postmaster in Denver in 1898. Baby Doe eventually had to take menial jobs to survive and eventually died supposedly as a 'madwoman'.

I had read in the past a bit about Baby Doe and Horace and found the story fascinating. A story of a woman who goes from rags to riches and back to rags again. A strong woman who takes on her role as a woman who would work in the mines, as a homewrecker by falling in love with a married man and being called a gold digger. She is a legend among the women of the mining west. I always love reading a story of strong women and I read this book in two sittings. Fascinating story, I think if you love a fast-paced, character-driven, based on real people, then go get a copy of this book! I highly recommend it!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

Praise for Gold Digger

“Rosenberg’s rollicking Western adventure strikes gold with a gutsy, good-hearted spitfire of a heroine and action aplenty.” —THELMA ADAMS, bestselling author of Bittersweet Brooklyn and The Last Woman Standing "Gold Digger tells the true story of Lizzie 'Baby Doe' Tabor, a beautiful young woman who in 1878 marries the son of a wealthy miner in order to save her family from penury. Shrewd and stubborn, Lizzie fights back-biting Victorian society, wins and loses vast fortunes, and bests conniving politicians in her larger-than-life story. A twisting tale worthy of Mark Twain, with a big-hearted heroine at the center." —MARTHA CONWAY, author of The Underground River

Testament by Alis Hawkins Spotlight ! @Alis_Hawkins

I am pleased to spotlight Testament by Alis Hawkins, there will be a review at a later date! Enjoy the spotlight and go purchase a copy if interested!

An intriguing timeshift thriller that will leave you breathless! Perfect for fans of Dan Brown, Philippa Gregory, Kate Mosse and Tom Harper.

What secrets lie hidden in the Medieval college of Kineton and Dacre…?

Salster, England, 1385

Master mason Simon of Kineton is building his magnum opus: a great college to rival any in England.

But the Bishop of Salster, hostile to free education, is determined to sabotage Simon’s project.

When rumours spread that the mason's son is cursed, the bishop sees an opportunity to undermine both Simon and the college.

And everything Simon has worked so hard for could end up crumbling down around him…

Salster, 2019

Damia Miller has been employed to promote penniless Kineton and Dacre college.

Delving into the college’s history, she becomes captivated by the vast grotesque painting that has recently been uncovered during renovations.

It soon becomes clear to Damia that the painting holds the key to the past – a past which could reveal exactly what she’s been searching for…

Alis Hawkins grew up on a dairy farm in Cardiganshire. Her inner introvert thought it would be a good idea to become a shepherd and, frankly, if she had, she might have been published sooner. As it was, three years reading English at Corpus Christi College, Oxford revealed an extrovert streak and a social conscience which saw her train as a Speech and Language Therapist. She has spent the subsequent three decades variously bringing up two sons, working with children and young people on the autism spectrum and writing fiction, non-fiction and plays. She writes the kind of books she likes to read: character-driven historical crime and mystery fiction with what might be called literary production values.

Series: The Teifi Valley Coroner historical crime series, featuring Harry Probert Lloyd and John Davies. Published by Freight Books 2017, due for reissue by The Dome Press October 2018

Trilogy: The first of the Black Death trilogy, The Black and The White, coming soon from Sapere Books (summer 2018).

Standalone: Testament – previously published by PanMacmillan, soon for reissue by Sapere Books (summer 2018).

Daring Summer by Elyse Douglas
Guest review by Nora S.
A secret love, a stormy beach, undercover passion and tender moments-- 'Daring Summer' by Elyse Douglas has all of these things in abundance.
From the very beginning of the novel, I was instantly transported into another world. This is the world of Kim, a 29 year-old former (sometimes current) dancer who married a rich older man for love. Unfortunately the rich older man, Ben assumes that she is cheating on him after she has dinner with a friend in Manhattan. Ben's reaction is incendiary. It is this that is the cause of his major car accident which leaves him crippled from the waist down. Kim must now take on the role of an at-home nurse and housekeeper-- a role made even more difficult by the attitude of her vicious husband.
It is while Kim is lamenting her fate and wandering the beach at night that she meets a young, handsome stranger and the two are instantly attracted to one another.
Derek is everything that Ben is not. He's young, he's kind and he seems to appreciate Kim in ways her husband never did and certainly does not now.
The passion and heat between Derek and Kim is scorching in this book. There were a few times I almost felt like I needed to put it down and go take a cold shower!

The juxtaposition of the summer heat with the heat of Derek and Kim's new love are so well done and gratifying to read. The writing has a lot more weight to it than your average romance and it left me feeling that the characters were more real and alive.
Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that this suspenseful romance is well worth the read and will leave you breathless and wishing that you had a beach house of your own!  A great read for anytime of the year but an excellent beach read! I give it 5 stars!
Praise Other Side of Summer
“5 stars, another great, emotional read from this author!! I was hooked the minute I started reading it. Be warned you will need a box of tissues to read. I really love this author!”- Melissa Mendoza, Anne & Melissa’s Book Love

“I found this to be a satisfying, well developed warm and enriching read. It gave me a lot to think about. I will recommend it to readers of both genders, age high school and up, who like substance in their novels.”-Laura Reading, Laura’s Interests

“The book is more than just a contemporary romance – it’s a family saga, a book about the bonds of family, about love (not just between partners but between parents and children), about life and the choices we make. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. The writing is hauntingly beautiful, and the author has a talent for crafting believable characters. An excellent book, and I look forward to reading more by this author.”- Majanka, I Heart Reading

“Great story, I give it five stars. I thought the book was wonderful and emotional, and I loved the writing style and how the words flowed. I was happy to fantasize about being there to watch the story unfold. I loved this story; took me back to my young beach days.”-Diana's Book Reviews

Daring Summer
Kim was jerked from her memories by the sound of thunder, or what she thought was thunder.  But she quickly realized it wasn’t thunder. The thunder and lightning had stopped minutes ago, as the violent part of the storm went roaring off to the east.
She stopped, pivoted and peered down the highway that disappeared into woolly fog.  She froze, every sense awake, feeling the cold beating rain on her head and face. She brushed the hair from her eyes, caught in a sudden nightmare.  A swift ringing alarm went off in her head.
She shouted out.  “Ben! Ben!” and she kicked off her heels and broke into a sprint.  As she tore off down the road, the wind threw gushes of rain into her face.  She ran frantically, calling Ben’s name, tears forming.
Minutes later, breaking through stringy fog, she saw it.  Something ahead—something that shouldn’t be there. A car off the road, down in a ravine.  It was pitched forward, looming out of the gray curtain of rain, wedged into a row of trees, appearing and disappearing in a filmy haze.  The taillights were blinking, as if shouting out disaster.
Kim hurled herself down the slope, across low shrubs and rocks, slipping on wet stones, falling branches slashing her face and feet.  She got up, stumbled, reaching for him, fell and reached for him again, pushed to her feet, reaching for him, calling to him.
In the relentless downpour, she finally tumbled against the car, chest heaving, head throbbing.  She didn’t notice the broken, scattered glass—didn’t notice or feel shards piercing her bleeding feet.  Peering in from the passenger window, she saw Ben slumped over the wheel, the airbag only partially deployed.  Blood splattered his white shirt—his faced was turned away from her.
Terror swelled her chest.  “Oh God. Ben!”
She frantically pulled and yanked on the door handle, but it didn’t budge.  The car had slammed into an embankment of rock and mud, so it was impossible for her to approach from the driver’s side.
She glanced about, her eyes wild, as sliding curtains of rain drenched her.
Nearly exhausted, she fumbled into her purse for her cell phone.  Wiping her eyes, she dialed 911. She was cold and shivering, her hands shaking.  Into the phone, she shouted out the location. She shouted for help. She shouted for an ambulance.  She hung up, leaned into the jagged open window and called to Ben. He didn’t stir. She wept, as the hard rain slanted into her, as the wind circled her.
It was only when she heard the loud, wobbling siren that a strange calm came over her.  Her head cleared, and, despite the uncontrollable shivering and her chattering teeth, she didn’t faint.  She didn’t waiver. She looked at Ben as they lowered the stretcher into the ambulance, and she told him that everything was going to be okay.

“Do you hear me, Ben?  I’m calling for you. I’m here with you.  I’m calling to you, Ben, just like I did when I was lost on the path.  Remember? Do you hear me, Ben? You came to me, Ben. You came for me and you found me.  Find me again, Ben. Ben, wake up. Wake up!”
