“I can walk.” Farah crosses her arms, and I can’t help but smile. Her long legs are covered in skintight yoga pants and she’s covered in a pink hoodie with the yoga studio logo on the front. Her cheeks are pinker than they’ve been in days, and her dark waves are loose around her shoulders. She looks amazing. I have to remind myself that being in jeans here doesn’t mean my coworkers need to see me walking around with a hard on. I give Sheila a wink and the older woman rolls her eyes at me. I take over the wheelchair and lean down to whisper in Farah’s ear.
“Hospital policy.” I kiss her ear and watch her shudder.
“It’s stupid.” She pouts, and from my angle, I can see her lower lip sticking out. I want to kiss it, drag it between my teeth.
“Sorry, legs. It is what it is.”
She turns to look at me, eyes narrowed. “Did you just call me legs?”
“I did. I haven’t had the chance to appreciate them until now, and they go on for days,” I tease.
“And now you’ll never see them.” She keeps glaring but I just smile.
“We’ll see about that.” I get her to the sliding doors near where I parked and wait for them to slide open.
“Where’s Vera?” Farah asks when I get to my car and put on the wheelchair brakes.
“I told her I got it.” I shrug and open my trunk, tossing her bag in the back. “When you’re hot and a nurse, little old ladies love to tell you yes.” I open the passenger door, offer her my hand to help her stand, and then help her ease into the seat. Once she’s in, I press the button for the seat warmer, close the door, and take the chair back in. I get in the driver’s side, glance at Farah and put it in drive. “What?” Her eyes are wide, lips parted.
“What is going on? You’re just taking me home?” The confusion is clear on her face.
“No.” I pull out of the parking lot and on to the main road. “I’m taking you to my house. And before you argue, I know what you’re going to say. Your apartment is on the fifth floor, mine is not. You are going to need help for a few days. Vera has to run the studio and can’t help you like I can.”
“You have a job. You work long hours. And the most important part is that I don’t know you!” She takes a deep breath and blows it out.
“Look legs--”
“Don’t call me that. I’ve been made fun of enough for being this tall. I don’t need it from you too.” Farah crosses her arms over her chest.
“I’m not making fun. Your legs are fucking amazing. All of you is.” I get to my road and make the turn.
“Oh,” is all she says. “So, you think I’m hot and you’re kidnapping me?” I can hear the smile in her voice.
“Pretty much.”

This “Behind the Scenes” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each blog, I’ll talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book. Warning: Blogs may contain spoilers.

Today I’m blogging about one of my favorite historical romances, The Viking’s Witch. The book is set in Celtic Scotland and blends a sensual love story with adventure and paranormal elements.

I loved everything about writing this book—the characters, the setting, the plot—and readers and reviewers loved it, too. When the book was originally published in 2012 by Medallion Press, it won an IPPY award for best historical romance e-book.

I’ve written a few detailed blogs about the characters, setting, research, the gritty details, conflicts, violence, and even the use of magic in the book. I won’t rehash all that here (you can read the other blogs in the blog section of my site: https://www.kelliwilkins.com/blog , but I will talk a bit about the origin of the book.

Like many of my romances, the idea for the story popped into my head one morning. I know it sounds strange, but the book came to me in a dream. It played out like I was watching a movie. When I woke up, I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote down everything I remembered. It took me about two hours, and from there I created an outline and started writing.

I had to do a lot of research while I wrote the book. I knew the story took place in Scotland, but I wasn’t sure where—or when. I needed to set the book in a place where the Vikings traveled in their early years of exploration, but it had to be an isolated location. After much back-and-forth, I decided on the Orkney Islands, then I had to decide on which island to set the story. (There are 70 different islands, but only 20 are inhabited.)

After I knew the setting, I did more research to learn what life was like in that time period for Odaria and Rothgar. I had to make the details realistic for the characters and the readers. Once I got a feel for what everyday life was like for each of them, I weaved the details into the story.

One way I did this was to have Odaria ask Rothgar questions (How did Norsemen travel so far across the ocean? What are their ships like?) and address the differences in their backgrounds. Rothgar also comments on how things are different on the island compared to his home and is proud to teach Odaria about his Nordic culture.

When writing, I also faced another big challenge: technically, Odaria and Rothgar would have been speaking different languages and would have trouble communicating. So I had to find a clever way for them to understand each other. In essence, I had to blend their two cultures together in a way that flowed with the story.

The opening scene is very powerful, and it was one of my favorites to write. When we first meet Odaria, she is about to be burned at the stake for being a witch. Her fellow villagers have turned against her, accused her of murder, and she’s been betrayed by everyone she knows. It’s a very dark time for her, and although deep down she is afraid, she doesn’t show it.

Instead, she calls down a curse on the villagers, and seconds later, screaming “demons” appear out of the darkness and capture most of her tormentors. Odaria is saved from the pyre—only to find herself facing another big problem—hordes of Norsemen have invaded the island.

In the beginning of the story I deliberately kept the truth about Odaria’s “abilities” vague. Did she really conjure up the Viking warriors who unwittingly saved her from certain death? Or was it all a coincidence? I wanted readers to follow the story and wonder “does she have abilities or not?” Is Rothgar right when he suspects Odaria is using trickery and manipulating circumstances to scare people into thinking she’s a witch?

Over the course of the book, Odaria never denies being a witch. She warns Rothgar not to cross her or she’ll hex him. Rothgar laughs at her threat. He calls her “my little witch” and makes fun of her… For a while.

Later, Rothgar needs Odaria’s help and tells her to prove she has magic powers. Although reluctant, Odaria doesn’t disappoint. After a few highly charged scenes, readers and Rothgar learn the truth about Odaira’s abilities. I loved showing readers (and Rothgar) Odaria’s powers of clairvoyance, telekinesis, and psychometry. The scenes that included the “magic” elements were a lot of fun to write.

Rothgar and Odaria are my favorite historical romance couple. Odaria is strong-willed and doesn’t take any nonsense from Rothgar. Although she’s tough and feisty, Rothgar uncovers a vulnerable, soft side to her. And while Rothgar appears gruff and violent on the outside, underneath he’s really a gentle and sensitive man. Together, they make a pretty good team. There’s lots of push/pull between them and plenty of hot love scenes.

If you love historical romances, paranormal romances, or romances filled with drama, emotional rollercoasters, and danger, you’ll want to read The Viking’s Witch. I’m happy to say readers and reviewers fell in love with Rothgar and Odaria as much as I did.

The novel opens with aristocratic Eleonora Fonseca Pimentel pleading with the High Court of Naples to be beheaded instead of hanged like a criminal. About the Author

Julieta Almeida Rodrigues is a writer, professor, scholar, and interpreter. Eleonora and Joseph: Passion, Tragedy, and Revolution in the Age of Enlightenment (New Academia Publishing) is her debut novel. Born and raised in Portugal, Rodrigues earned a PhD at Columbia University, where the renowned Margaret Mead was her dissertation sponsor.

Rodrigues is the author of two collections of short fiction, The Rogue and Other Portuguese Stories and On the Way to Red Square (both also by New Academia Publishing). The latter is a fictionalized account of her life in the diplomatic circles of Moscow in the 1980s. She also published a narrative work about Sintra, Portugal, titled Hora Crepuscular/ Drawing Dusk/La Hora Crepuscular (Agir, Execução Gráfica).

She is a member of the Pen Club of Portugal, the Fulbright Commission Team of Evaluators in Portugal (2014 Prize for International Cooperation, the Prince of Asturias Foundation), and of CLEPUL (Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures), Faculty of Humanities, the University of Lisbon. She has taught at the University of Lisbon and at Georgetown University, and has been a Visiting Scholar at the New School (twice).

She has spoken at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State, The Chawton House Library in the United Kingdom, The International Conference on the Short Story, The American Portuguese Studies Association, and the Historical Writers of America, among other institutions and cultural societies. “He boiled up?” Enid Carmichael had never heard anything so crazy. All that work they put into those vegetables, all that washing and chopping.

“He was dead, all right. William and Sadie arrived right after me. They had been to the farmers market for fresh parsley for the garnish. They said Cornelius was fine when they left. He was supposed to stir occasionally, and he must have fallen in by accident. He had pulled up a chair to stand on because the pot was so tall. William didn’t use a chair, but Cornelius must have needed it, and then got off balance. What a horrible way to go.”

“Poor man.” Harriet Flynn crossed herself. “May his soul rest in peace.”

Mrs. Carmichael started to ask if the contest was still on, but Harriet wasn’t done. With barely a pause, she said, “What happened to Boris?”

“He’s with Geraldine, Cornelius’s ex-wife. She was going to take him for the day anyway while the judges were there, and she showed up early for some reason, which was very lucky since Boris was beside himself.”

“Poor Boris,” said Mrs. Flynn. “I hope he’s all right.”

“Yes, that poor little dog. He must have seen the whole thing. Oh, dear. Oh, dear,” said Alma Gordon.

Enid Carmichael’s own dog, Snowball, would be mighty upset if he saw her topple into a soup pot. Well, maybe not upset. Maybe more interested in the soup. Mrs. Carmichael had been in intensive care once for a whole week, and when she returned the dog showed how much he missed her by eating her “Get Well” fruit candies. He had diarrhea for days. Boris sounded more distraught.

“I told the soup kitchen I would come back this afternoon to help them clean up. I said we’d all come. It’s too big a job for the two of them, and they’re pretty shaken,” Frances Noonan said.

Just like her to volunteer them all, Enid thought.

“Of course we’ll come,” Harriet Flynn said.

What was it now with Harriet Flynn? She was suddenly as much a do-gooder as Frances Noonan.

“Oh, dear. I don’t know if I want to see that big pot,” Alma Gordon said.

“What about the soup?” Enid Carmichael said. “No Big Pot Soup Contest? The judges aren’t coming?”

“There was a man in the soup,” Frances Noonan said.

“But he must be gone now,” Enid persisted.

Frances Noonan shivered. “Yes, he’s gone. It took all three of us to get him out. The police were quite perturbed that we moved him, but we didn’t know he was dead. We thought we were saving him. Oh, my. It was quite a sight.”

“What, what?” Enid said. “What was a sight?”

Sarah spoke for the first time. The girl looked peaked and hadn’t touched the spice cake Frances had set before her. Enid had had two pieces, herself. “Please don’t tell us,” Sarah said. “Burns that severe…”

Mrs. Carmichael saw Frances Noonan shiver again. Everything interesting that happened to the Fog Ladies, Frances was there, and Enid was not. So unfair.

About Susan McCormick

Susan McCormick is a writer and doctor who lives in Seattle. She graduated from Smith College and George Washington University School of Medicine, with additional medical training in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, where she lived in an elegant apartment building much like the one in the book. Susan served as a doctor in the U.S. Army for nine years before moving to the Pacific Northwest and civilian practice as a gastroenterologist. In addition to the Fog Ladies series, she also wrote Granny Can’t Remember Me, a lighthearted picture book about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and The Antidote, a timely middle grade medical fantasy released May 2021. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two sons. She loves giant dogs and has loved an English Mastiff, Earl, and two Newfoundlands, Edward and Albert.
