Saturday, the second day of July, in the year of our Lord, 1644, will be a day long remembered by the men and women committed to ending the reign of a tyrannical King. For on this day, the forces of Charles the First were crushed on the bloody fields of Marston Moor.

The calamitous defeat forces the increasingly desperate Royalists to intensify their attempts to bring about the immediate demise of their Parliamentarian enemies. This includes devising an audacious plan to assassinate the man they believe is key to the war’s outcome.

With the plotters ready to strike, Francis Hacker, one of Parliament’s most loyal soldiers, becomes aware of the conspiracy. With little time to act, he does everything in his power to frustrate their plans. But, alas, things start to unravel when brave Hacker finds himself pitted against a ruthless and cunning mercenary, a man who will resort to anything to achieve a ‘kill’.

EXCERPT:

The young sister ran through the silent city while the prophet waited for her to arrive. The old man knew she would come; he had seen her already. Hidden by the shadow of an old staircase, eyes fixed on the door, he tried not to get distracted by the creatures in his vision.

Thousands of them, maybe millions, all crammed within glass walls.

The youngest sat at the center of the glass prison. It was taller than the tallest mountain. It was quiet amid the frenzy of its brothers. Its head so high it saw beyond the ceiling of its prison, straight into the realm of the Eldest Lords. Light leaked from underneath its shaking, half-closed eyelids. It peeked into the future.

As the prophet watched them, the creatures stared at him from far away. He could see them, yet his mind could not make full sense of their shapes, only of a few features. A crowd of wings, fangs, stingers, and every piece of every animal he could think of, and some he had never seen, crawling on each other while human parts pushed their way through. The tall one, its eyes closed, hummed over and over.

“We are so close. It won’t be long.”

The others followed its chanting and moved back and forth in front of the glass holding them prisoners, just like animals expecting a bite of their prey.

The prophet almost missed the nun’s arrival. She ran up the stairs, hesitating as she put one foot on the first step.

Unseen, the prophet followed.

From the roof, he tasted the entire city. A forest of concrete and metal spreading in every direction, so much so that nothing existed if not within it. The sun blinded him, shining in white and gold. Dawn was a miracle. He stood still, in awe of the most magnificent city, and he almost forgot he had followed someone.

But there she was, the young sister, standing close to the balustrade, her arms raised to the sky, her shape dark against the sunlight.

The tall metallic tower pierced the sky and stabbed the sun, just like an arrow. The star bled, scattering its light all over the town.

White particles fell from the sky. Snow perhaps, or dust, he could not say. He dared to look up. The sky had turned dark despite the sun shining in it, light still leaking over the city.

In the cold air, no sound but the wind.

Nothing else made a noise. No sound of cars or their horns. No talking or music playing, no chirping of birds.

The prophet stood transfixed.

Cars were still on the asphalt, their lights on. Some stuck in place, some coasting along the streets. Many had slid, hitting nearby objects. Tombstones in an old graveyard, they lay against each other, against lampposts, or sat on the sidewalks.

Men and women, asleep, still clung to their steering wheels.

Their heads blasted out of the windshields or hung from the windows. Hundreds and hundreds of bodies covered the sidewalks and the streets. More must have been resting within the buildings, unmoving, untouched.

Here and there, white, black, and red stains, each tens of meters long, covered the streets—flocks of birds caught in whatever happened.

Nobody moved, nobody talked, everyone rested in this cemetery, testimony of a dark miracle.

The world had moved on. The city, now empty, stayed behind.

Paris was dead, and the Great Ones were free.

The Attic on Queen Street by Karen White Blog Tour!

Return to the house on Tradd Street one last time in this hauntingly spectacular finale to the bestselling series featuring psychic medium Melanie Trenholm.

After the devastating events of the past few months, the last thing Melanie Trenholm wants is to think about the future.  Why, when her husband, Jack, has asked for a separation—a separation that might have been her fault?  Nevertheless, with twin toddlers, a stepdaughter leaving for college soon, a real estate career to resume and a historic home that is still being restored, Melanie doesn’t have much time to wonder where it all went wrong—but that doesn’t stop her from trying to win her husband back.

Their relationship issues are pushed aside, however, when longtime nemesis, Marc Longo, comes to them with a proposition:  allow their Tradd Street house to be used as the filming location for the movie adaptation of Marc’s bestselling book, and he will help Jack re-establish his stalled writing career. Despite Melanie’s hesitation, Jack jumps at the chance.  But Melanie’s doubts soon prove to be well founded when she uncovers ulterior reasons for Marc wanting to be back in their house—reasons that include a hidden gem so brilliant that legend links it to the most infamous jewel of all, the Hope Diamond.

But Melanie has an unexpected ally in protecting the house and its inhabitants—the ghost of a Civil War era girl warns her of increasing threats to her family. But she’s not the only spirit who is haunting Melanie.  A malevolent ghost seems determined to stop Melanie from investigating the decades-old murder of a friend’s sister, and this spirit will stop at nothing to protect its secrets—even from beyond the grave.

Melanie and Jack must work together to find the answers before evil spirits of past and present destroy everything they love.

I called Ox. “Change of plans. Bender’s isn’t going to work…” I floundered on an alternative. Ox was really hoping to celebrate. It took a second, but I remembered The Rox. A little upscale for my taste, but it would have to do for tonight.

“Meet me at The Rox.” I was already heading towards my truck. “And don’t laugh. I already know what you’re thinking. You’re the one who wants to celebrate, so beggars can’t be choosy.” I ended the call. It was a short drive to reach the nightclub. The parking lot was packed, but I managed to find a space. As I walked towards the entrance, I hoped the place didn’t have a dress code. I’d cleaned up from earlier, but I was still rockin’ just jeans and a t-shirt.

When I stepped through the door, I was about to look around for a spot to hole up and wait for Ox, when some woman grabbed my face and crushed her lips against mine. I was about to pull away, but shit, if those weren’t the softest, sweetest lips I’d ever tasted. I shut my eyes and went with it. Whoever she was, she was hard and soft in all the right places, and the woman could kiss. She may have started things, but it wasn’t too long before I mastered her. My tongue swept in to explore the sweetness of her mouth. She tasted of lime and salt. Catcalls and whistles broke us apart. She pulled away before I did.

When I laid eyes on who my kisser was, I was stunned. Lexie fucking Campbell? What had gotten into her? Miss Goodie Two Shoes herself. In high school, we hadn’t run in the same circles. She’d been unattainable: respected and well-to-do parents, head cheerleader, student body president, girlfriend to Daniel the Dickwad, captain of the football team.

Every guy wanted to fuck her, including me. For a moment she seemed to sober when she looked at me. Realization shown in her eyes. Just as quickly, she doused the flicker of sobriety, and licked her lips in a sexy, suggestive manner. I was sure she knew who I was, but she didn’t acknowledge it.

Lexie looked over her shoulder at the bar, still a bit unsure, despite the kiss she’d laid on me. Over her shoulder, I glanced in that direction. Two women stared at us, and I remembered the girls they used to be. Lexie’s girlfriends.

In high school you rarely saw one without the others. The one with the short hair glared at me. “Your friends?” Needing something to say, I asked the question, even though I already knew the answer. Lexie whipped back around to face me. It was clear the alcohol was her liquid courage. Nice girls like her didn’t pull stunts like that. Suspicion clawed its way into my brain.

I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering if this was part of some prank, joke or dare. Well, if it was, I was calling her bluff. I wasn’t gonna let her back down. Stepping closer, I put my arm around her waist and pulled her into my body. Her swift intake of breath was followed by her tilting her head back to look up at me.

My gaze roamed over her face, taking in those beautiful, luscious brown eyes, her warm brown skin, and the beauty mark that sat at the curve of her top lip. The mess of curls that framed her face made me ache to feel the texture, but I knew better than to put my hands in her hair.

For a second, I lingered over her plump lips, remembering how they’d felt pressed against mine. I wanted more of her. My gaze snapped back up to meet hers, daring her to chicken out. This was a dangerous game she’d started, and I intended to finish it. Her body trembled slightly. I half expected her to flee back to her friends. Lexie swallowed and licked her bottom lip. “Let’s grab a drink.”

“Okay.” She takes several deep breaths before coming to stand in front of me. “I’m going to need a little time to find my own place, but in the meantime, I need a small favor from you.”

I arch my eyebrows at her declaration. “I need you to let me stay here. At least until Alex has that baby.” I sit on the couch and put my hands behind my head. I school my features so she won’t see how happy I am by her announcement.

“Is that right?” I ask. “Yes. Do you know why, Adam? Because it’s the least you can do after what you did to me in Vegas. Besides, Jason always folds where our mother is concerned. She drops this bombshell, and he’s too much of a nice guy to tell her to GTFO.

So”, she says, sighing deeply, “I guess I can sleep on the couch, but it would be nice if you would let me have the bed.”

“The bed is yours.” I quickly agree to her demand. She stops her pacing, turns to me and narrows her eyes. “But let’s get one thing straight. I didn’t do anything to you in Vegas, so you can stop that lie right the hell now.”

“I’ll pay rent of course,” she says, ignoring my last comment. “Name your price.” I stand up and go stand directly in front of her. She backs away and ends up stuck between my body and the wall.

“I’d go stay with Ananda, but she just got married and I don’t want to be a nuisance to her right now, and a hotel would cost too much money and would set me back. Dammit.”

“And you hate being alone, so I’m your next best choice.”

“How do you know I hate being alone?” She crosses her arms and stares. “You live with your brother and his family. You hardly ever go anywhere by yourself. I bet you never had any intentions of moving out. You only offered to move out knowing they would ask you to stay.”

She scoffs and moves away from me. I watch her tight ass pace across my living room, and I will my body not to have its natural reaction. I reach out, touch her arm, and she stops walking away. When she looks at me again, I see the uncertainty in her eyes.

The fire from minutes ago is gone, and the only things left are the vulnerability and unease oozing out of her. It’s the same look she had on New Year’s Eve. I’ve noticed it before, and I’ve always wondered why. Why someone so beautiful, smart and loved by so many people would always have this air of loneliness, but I think I finally got my answer tonight.

“Hey, sweetheart?” God his voice is sexy; like every romance hero I’ve ever read about in one human. He kind of looks like one too. “Eden?”
“Not your sweetheart,” I mumble, rolling over to face him.

“Yeah, I know.” Does he sound disappointed? Or am I really tired? “Our five-hour trip just got extended until this wreck clears up.”

I roll back over. “Okay.” Then I realize that I was face to face with him which means he’s not driving. He has this crooked half-smile on his face that’s… wow. Ace is crouched so that our noses are barely three inches apart. “We’re not moving.”

“Nope.” Ace pops the ‘p’ and gives me a pitying look.

“It’s fine, I don’t even know what I’m going to say to my sister when I get there.” I sit up and a big hand comes out to stop me. I blink and realize I nearly hit my head on the top bunk. “I guess I’m not awake yet. Thanks.”

“I’ve ended up with many a goose egg because of this bunk.” Ace laughs and I swoon. Like I literally make a swooning sound. He smirks at me, and I roll my eyes. I can feel how red my face is and make sure to not look at him. “Your burger is up here.”

“You got me a burger?” My stomach growls.

“I figured you’d feel better and be hungry after a nap.” He gets back in the driver’s seat, folding his long legs to get up there. I squeeze through and pick up my burger before I sit down. There are red tail lights as far as I can see. Great.

“Now, I need to know that you didn’t steal that car. I also need to know you’re not sixteen or something.”

My burger is halfway to my mouth, but I stop to answer him. “I’ll be twenty in a few days.” Ace shakes his head and rubs his bearded jaw. “Is there something wrong with that? I’m not sixteen, you’re not endangering a minor.” I take a bite of the burger. It’s not warm anymore, but I’m starving, so I really don’t care.

“Am I harboring a fugitive?” Ace watches me chew the burger.

I shake my head. “I’ve driven that car since I was sixteen. It’s always been my car, but my parents do own it. I think they want me back more than they want the car. They can buy a new car, I’m the last daughter they can marry off.” As soon as I say the words, I cover my mouth. I did not mean to say so much.

“Marry off?” With a quick glance at the still cars around us, he turns in his seat to look at me. “Spill it.”

“I get a question before I answer yours.” I talk around the bite of burger. Ace pretends to think, eyebrow arched, tapping his chin. I giggle and he smiles. God he’s hot, rugged, manly.

“I’ll answer your question.”

“How old are you?”
I caught him off guard. Good. Ace clears his throat. “Thirty-three.” My eyes widen. “Practically ancient.” He glances back up at the traffic then those emerald eyes land on me again.

“You’re not ancient. Older than I would have guessed, but you thought I was sixteen.” I shrug and pop the last bite of burger in my mouth.

“Too old for you.” He holds my gaze when he says it and I can feel the heat rolling off him in waves. Oh wow.

EXCERPT:

“Ready for our hike?” Tanya asked.

“Do pigs fly?” Sue said with a laugh.

“The sooner we do our hike, the sooner we can get on the road to Santa Fe,” Ellen pointed out. “Just think, in five hours, we could be shopping in the plaza.”

“Is that supposed to motivate me? That’s just what I’m looking forward to, more walking.”

“Oh, come on, Sue,” Tanya said. “This will be more of a stroll than a hike. I promise.”

Ellen and her friends put on their walking shoes and then took the trail beside their cabin into the canyon.

Ellen breathed in the cool, morning air. The beauty of the canyon elevated her mood. Some of the stone formations were thick and striated, while other rocks formed mounds of crushed granite. In the distance was a tall formation that reminded Ellen of the sphinx.

“Watch your step,” Tanya said from up front as she stepped over a large rock.

“This feels so good,” Ellen said from where she took up the rear. “I feel like we’re one with nature.”

“And nature is so majestic, isn’t it?” Tanya said. “Doesn’t that big rock look like the tower of a magical castle?”

“I thought it looked more like the sphinx,” Ellen said.

Sue shook her head. “You see a castle and Ellen sees a sphinx. What does it say about me that I see a penis?”

Tanya scoffed. “You know what it says about you.”

“Don’t tell Tom,” Sue warned. “He’ll say my mind is in the gutter.”

“Isn’t it?” Ellen asked.

“Yes, but there’s no need for Tom to know that.”

The three friends chuckled. Ellen realized that if someone had overheard Sue, they might think she was a promiscuous woman who hid her extramarital interests from her husband, but her friends knew she just liked to make people laugh.

Tanya asked, “You think there’s any truth to what that psychic said about there being a shade in Santa Fe? What if there is? What if he confronts us?”

“Oh, Tanya,” Sue said, “you know as well as we do that there are ghosts everywhere. I’m sure there’s more than one shade in Santa Fe.”

“But why would the psychic warn us?” Tanya wanted to know.

“If anyone can handle a confrontation with a ghost, it’s us,” Sue said. “Don’t let fear get in your way of having a good time.”

Ellen heard a shriek as Tanya stopped short.

“Tanya? What are you screaming about?” Ellen asked from the rear.

“That wasn’t me,” Tanya said, backing up. “It was that tarantula. See it?”

On the trail two feet in front of Tanya, a hairy tarantula stood on its hind legs shrieking like a small child. The spider was as big as Ellen’s hand.

“Turn back” Sue said, as she pushed Ellen in the direction from which they’d come. “I’ve had enough of nature for one day.”

“So much for not letting fear get in the way of having a good time,” Ellen teased.

“I can handle just about anything but a hairy spider,” Sue said. “Especially one that screams.”
