It’s Christmastime in Tinsel Town, and there’s plenty of ho-ho-homicide at the soon-to-open Santa’s Magic theme park, where bodies are dropping like snowflakes. Former pop star Sandy Fairfax has a killer job—he’s the emcee for the televised Miss North Pole beauty contest--er, scholarship pageant. But will the beautiful contestants make his girlfriend jealous? Or will she join him in his sleuthing? The deadly Christmas season begins at a celebrity bowling tournament when a pinsetter plops down a body instead of the pins. Throw in surfing Santas, a seductive executive's wife, a sleazy tabloid editor, an egotistical movie rival and a gift-wrapped death trap, and it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Book excerpt: (Sandy is on stage, rehearsing with the pageant contestants)

I glanced at the cue cards. The writers had no doubt penned my quips while drinking in a West Hollywood bar. My next line made me choke, but I obediently read it with as much passion as I could muster. “Well, Summer, sounds as if you’ll be busy buying quite a few presents this year for all of your folks. And when you’re not cracking the books at the university, what hobbies do you enjoy?”

Her lovely blue eyes gazed out past the camera and onto the cue cards that were flipped as she talked. “I have many interests, Sandy. I love taking long walks on the beach and collecting jazz albums and trying out new recipes and—”

We never heard about her other hobbies. Summer abruptly froze and gasped, as if choking. She threw her head and shoulders back. Her mouth hung open. Her eyes dilated. She pitched forward. I grabbed Summer just before she hit the floor. I knelt, put my mic on the stage, and set the girl down on her back. Her arms and legs were limp.

I was in shock. “Somebody call a doctor!”

“What’s going on down there?” Guy was in the control booth. His voice boomed—in stereo—over the loudspeakers along the wall.

I pressed my fingers against Summer’s neck. “I don’t feel a pulse!”

“Sandy, what are you doing? Tell Summer to stand up.”

Of course, Guy couldn’t hear me from inside the booth. I picked up my microphone and shouted into it. “Summer needs a doctor, now!”

Guy muttered some raw language and then declared that he was leaving his heavenly throne to join the peons on the floor. What he actually said was, “I’m coming down.”

“Call an ambulance before you do!” I added, before I put the mic on the floor.

But the poor girl was beyond hope. Summer’s head was twisted to one side. I reached behind her neck to move her head into a more dignified position. I felt a bump on her skin. I rotated her head to investigate.

A tiny red welt stood out against her light skin.

The other contestant started to rushed onto the stage. I ordered them to stay back. The sight of a dead body might start a panic and raise some awkward questions that I couldn’t answer.

“What happened?” “Is she sick?” “Did she faint?” The girls kept their distance, but peppered me with questions.

I lied. “She . . . she passed out.”

Captain Lyons stormed in from the wings and stood over me. “Mr. Gower radioed me. I rushed right over. Is there a problem?”

“I would say so.” I kept my voice low so the contestants wouldn’t hear me. “Summer Attenberg is dead.”

“You’re qualified to make a medical diagnosis?”

“Does she look alive to you?”

Lyons dropped to one knee and examined the body. “What did you say her name was?”

“Summer Attenberg. She is—was—one of the Miss North Pole contestants. That’s all I know about her.”

Lyons eyed me. “Didn’t I see you on Sunday at the bowling alley when the actor died?”

“Well, yes, but that was just a coincidence.”

“I’ll be the judge of that. Seems odd that whenever you show up on the lot, something suspicious happens. Stand up.” As there was nothing more either of us could do to help Summer, we both got on our feet. “Tell me what happened.”

“The two of us were standing here talking, and she collapsed.”

“Did you strike her?”

“No! I never touched her. And there’s an odd red lump on her neck.”

“What do you mean?”

“Take a look.”

Lyons squatted again, ran her fingers along the body’s neck and stood. “It looks like a pimple.”

“Excuse me, captain, but girls in beauty contests do not have zits.”

“It could be an insect bite or an allergic reaction to something she ate.”

“Then how do you explain a perfectly healthy young girl dying in ten seconds?”

“Perhaps she had an undisclosed medical condition that might have disqualify her from the pageant. As for you, Mr. Fairfax, I’m still waiting to hear how you managed to show up alongside a second body in less than a week.”

“I broke a mirror and got seven years of bad luck.”

Guy had finally descended from the heavens to join us. “Glen says the police and paramedics are on their way.” He took a long look at the body, then stared at the contestants huddled at the far side of the stage. Guy finally got his brain working and dismissed us for the rest of the day, but said we should return tomorrow at our regular call time.

“Aren’t you canceling the pageant?” I asked. Not only would that be the proper thing to do out of respect for the deceased, but would also get me away from the looney director.

“No reason why we should,” said Guy. “We can’t stop production just because one contestant has a health condition.”

“This young lady has a death condition!” I said.

Lyons spotted the cameras, then turned to the director. “I need to see the footage of the girl falling down.”

“Sorry, captain,” said Guy. “This is just a rehearsal. We’re not recording.”

Lyons eyed me. “So, we only have your word on what happened.”

This seemed like a good time to involve my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, so I said nothing.

Asbury High and the Arson Avenger: Asbury High Series by Kelly Brady Channick

About Asbury High and the Arson Avenger

Suspicious fires erupt all over town. With no pattern or motive—can they all really be coincidences? Or are they linked? And why? Is there an arsonist hiding in Asbury?

Carly, Maddie, Pilot and Cornelious begin their junior year, ready to take on the town as upperclassmen. With their most recent case solved, the gang joins the town in hopes of starting anew, with the focus on normalcy. However, in Asbury “normal” is a foreign word. As new relationships bloom and jealousy mounts, the heat begins to rise.

During the first week of school, the local music hangout explodes, leaving only ashes behind. Within weeks, a second location burns down, leaving the gang little doubt that an arsonist is loose in Asbury. Due to growing political pressure from town Mayor Jeremiah Gibbz, as well as lack of any evidence, the fire and police departments are hesitant to blame criminal activity. As usual, the gang finds itself thrust into the investigation, wondering where to begin—especially since the whole town seems adamant on denying foul play.

Unfortunately, proving the fires are the result of an arsonist seems to be just as difficult as solving the actual case. As more fires burn across Asbury, the teens wonder what the motive could possibly be. Finding themselves pulled into a world of revenge and discovering an ages-old grudge, the teens find themselves facing increasingly dangerous situations.

Adding to their fiery investigation are new relationships and typical high school drama. After seeing Maddie with another guy, Cornelious realizes too late that his feelings for Maddie are beyond simple friendship—but will that tear the gang apart when Asbury needs them the most? With the scheming Pitbulls seemingly lurking behind every door, political and departmental denial of arson, busy teen schedules, and new relationships pulling the gang apart, the foursome find it hard to get together.

With all these disruptions, can the quartet resolve their issues and find the arsonist before Asbury burns down?

BRADY HOUSE ORIGINAL BEEF TACO---or to locals, Brady's Taco Pancakes:

Make the taco meat:

1.   Cook and stir one pound of ground beef or ground turkey, until browned and crumbly

2.    Season beef with taco sauce, and serve.

***The Taco Sauce and Cheese Mix is homemade, and Chefs Brandan and Dennis do not release this info to the public, sorry!

Make the pancake:

1.  Sift two cups of flour, one teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt and cinnamon, and one tablespoon sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in one cup of milk, one egg and three tablespoons of melted butter; mix until smooth.

2.  Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

Scoop a generous portion of the deliciously gooey and spicy taco meat (already doused in special sauce and cheese) into a hard taco shell. Then fold the finished, fluffy pancake, around the taco shell, and VOILA! Enjoy!

About Kelly Brady Channick

Growing up just over the bridge from Ocean City, NJ in Upper Township meant discovering plenty of fun places to both read, write, and run around outside like a maniac. In fact, for as long as she could remember, Kelly loved making up stories and leaving her listeners/readers on the edge of their seats. Perhaps that’s why she always managed to talk herself out of trouble...

So, if her past teachers and/or coaches are reading this, maybe its time to reconsider some of the tales she may have told back in the day.

After graduating from Ocean City High School, Kelly accepted a basketball scholarship to Holy Family University, in Philadelphia. Upon graduating college, Kelly continued to live in Philly, teaching for four years and meeting the love of her life during a snowstorm. In fact, it was her awesome husband who encouraged her to pursue her writing--Yay, Ryan!

Before writing page-turners, however, she taught first, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade — like a dessert menu, she simply had to test them all out. But her favorite job is the one she’s now doing full time: writing.

As her first published work, the Asbury High series has been brewing since she was 18, and has something for every type of reader--go ahead take look for yourself! If you love mysteries, you've found your new favorite author. Kelly loves to craft whodunit mysteries, leading readers through various twists and turns filled with red-herrings, hidden clues, and more peculiar characters than a reality show. As an athlete, she hopes that the importance of teamwork and overcoming adversity is also quite clear in her writing

Kelly lives in South Jersey with her handsome husband, energetic baby boys, two cookie-stealing dogs, and an awfully smart cat. The third, Murder Is No Picnic, will be published in May 2022.

Destiny's Calling by Tracy Broemmer Release Tour!

Rae stumbles into a bar and finds herself twenty years in the past. When she falls in love with Chip and decides to stay in the year 1980, she gets thrust back to her present. Can Rae get back to Chip, if only to say goodbye? Readers who enjoy Christina Lauren and Emma St. Clair, will love Destiny’s Calling by Tracy Broemmer, a time travel, romantic comedy.

Blurb

In the year 2000, Rae Warner is an up-and-coming attorney, with a pretty quiet social life. She’s been out on a couple of lukewarm dates with a new guy, and she’s (not terribly) excited about where it might go.

So when she stumbles into what she thinks is Barney’s Tavern in 2000 to grab a quick bite to eat and a cold drink on the way to a meeting and collides with blond, muscle-bound Chip Andrews and realizes she is actually in the Hi Hat Tavern in 1980, she fantasizes about never going home. What’s wrong with staying in 1980?

Everything, of course! Her life is in 2000. Her big brother (who’s most likely responsible for sending her back twenty years in time,) her career, and her home are in 2000. However, as long as she’s here, and blond, muscle-bound Chip wants to flirt with her, it won’t hurt to flirt back, will it?

Rae soon realizes she’s not very good at casual flirting, and the more time she and Chip spend together, the more she likes him. Not just his blond, muscle-bound good looks, but his smile and the fact that he likes to dance and he likes pina coladas and the way he makes her laugh…

What would it hurt to stay in 1980? Rae finds it harder and harder to remember why she needs to get back to her life, to 2000. She might be in love with Chip Andrews, so maybe she could just stay in his time and find happiness with him. Except, suddenly, she finds herself back on Broadway standing outside Barney’s Tavern…in the year 2000.

Instead of being happy to be home, Rae is desperate to get back to 1980 for just one last kiss…So, how does she convince her brother that she really did jump from 2000 to 1980 and back to 2000 and how in the world can she get back to Chip, if only to say goodbye?

Rae groans as she collides with what feels like a brick wall. She looks up, unnerved to find herself face to face with a drop-dead gorgeous kid. He looks like he could be romance novel cover model material with his longish, dirty blond hair that curls around his neck and his ears. His brown eyes. Rae is so close to him, she can see tiny little flecks of gold in them. His tanned face looks soft, but the line of his jaw is firm. Five o’clock shadow covers his lower jaw and chin. Rae finds herself wondering what that five o’clock shadow would feel like if he kissed her. Maybe if he kissed her neck. Her stomach.
Embarrassed, she ducks her head again. What on earth is wrong with her? Fantasizing about kissing a total stranger, one who doesn’t even look legal to be in a bar as a matter of fact. She swallows hard, reminds herself she needs to get in touch with Charlie so she can get some cash to pay for her dinner. She really needs to eat.
“Hi.” The kid’s voice is gravelly and sexy. Much too sexy for his age. And for her good. “Let me help you out,” he offers.
“No, thank you. I just need to call my brother.”
“Really,” he says and smiles as he reaches to pull a bill‐ fold from his pocket. “Lemme get it for you.”
Rae watches as he pulls out the bills to cover her meal. She looks back at the bartender who is watching her with more interest than suspicion. He’s not concerned she’s going to bolt out the door without paying for the food she’s ordered.
“Okay,” she concedes. “But let me go ahead and call Charlie. He can bring me the cash to pay you back before you go.”
“Whatever.”
Rae steps around him and remembers the feel of his body up against hers. Lean and hard with muscle. She shakes her head again and hurries to the back of the bar. Now this makes her nervous. Standing in the back of a tavern with a bunch of men in the room behind her and the men’s room two steps away. She might be a black belt, but she’s not too excited about needing to use those moves.
She looks back over her shoulder. Money Boy is watching her. He offers her a reassuring smile. It should make her feel better that someone is watching her back. But she can’t help but picture his lips again, so soft-looking, and the five o’clock shadow and the way it might feel to kiss him. To hear his sexy voice say her name.
A wave of heat tingles inside her. It starts in her belly and crawls lower. She feels it out to her fingertips. How ridiculous. It’s not like it’s even been that long since she’s seen Paul.
Not like Paul has ever made you burn with anticipation over a simple kiss, either.
“Stop it!” she hisses to herself. She digs for change and curses when she chips a nail. She drops the coins to assess the damage. A bit of the burgundy is now gone from the acrylic tip of her index finger.
“Dammit!”
“Everything okay, miss?” Money Boy calls.
“Yes!” she snaps and then feels bad. He’s only trying to be helpful. “Thank you.”

Sisters of the Sweetwater Fury By Kinley Bryan

Three sisters. Two Great Lakes. One furious storm.

Based on actual events...

It's 1913 and Great Lakes galley cook Sunny Colvin has her hands full feeding a freighter crew seven days a week, nine months a year. She also has a dream—to open a restaurant back home—but knows she'd never convince her husband, the steward, to leave the seafaring life he loves.

In Sunny’s Lake Huron hometown, her sister Agnes Inby mourns her husband, a U.S. Life-Saving Serviceman who died in an accident she believes she could have prevented. Burdened with regret and longing for more than her job at the dry goods store, she looks for comfort in a secret infatuation.

Two hundred miles away in Cleveland, youngest sister Cordelia Blythe has pinned her hopes for adventure on her marriage to a lake freighter captain. Finding herself alone and restless in her new town, she joins him on the season’s last trip up the lakes.

On November 8, 1913, a deadly storm descends on the Great Lakes, bringing hurricane-force winds, whiteout blizzard conditions, and mountainous thirty-five-foot waves that last for days. Amidst the chaos, the women are offered a glimpse of the clarity they seek, if only they dare to perceive it.
