New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).

Author: Carolyn Hughes

Publication Date: 6th October 2022

Publisher: Riverdown Books

Page Length: 360

Genre: Historical Fiction

How do you overcome the loathing, lust and bitterness threatening you and your family’s honour?

It’s 1363, and in Steyning Castle, Sussex, Dickon de Bohun is enjoying life as a squire in the household of Earl Raoul de Fougère. Or he would be, if it weren’t for Edwin de Courtenay, who’s making his life a misery with his bullying, threatening to expose the truth about Dickon’s birth.

At home in Meonbridge for Christmas, Dickon notices how grown-up his childhood playmate, Libby Fletcher, has become since he last saw her and feels the stirrings of desire. Libby, seeing how different he is too, falls instantly in love. But as a servant to Dickon’s grandmother, Lady Margaret de Bohun, she could never be his wife.

Margery Tyler, Libby’s aunt, meeting her niece by chance, learns of her passion for young Dickon. Their conversation rekindles Margery’s long-held rancour against the de Bohuns, whom she blames for all the ills that befell her family, including her own servitude. For years she’s hidden her hunger for retribution, but she can no longer keep her hostility in check.

As the future Lord of Meonbridge, Dickon knows he must rise above de Courtenay’s loathing and intimidation and get the better of him. And, surely, he must master his lust for Libby, so his own mother’s shocking history is not repeated? Of Margery’s bitterness, however, he has yet to learn…

Beset by the hazards these powerful and dangerous emotions bring, can young Dickon summon up the courage and resolve to overcome them?

Secrets, hatred and betrayal, but also love and courage – Squire’s Hazard, the fifth MEONBRIDGE CHRONICLE.

Searching (Dragons of New York, Book 1)

by Rachel Graves

GENRE: Urban Fantasy

A dragon terrified of being discovered by the government, Ravenna Drake is constantly on the move. When the woman who raised her gets cancer, Ravenna trades her nomadic work restoring black market magical goods for a steady job. But her cautious life ends after her name is found at the scene of a werewolf murder.

Dr. Ian Chen, a sorcerer bonded to a powerful relic, works for the government treating supernatural citizens. He insists on investigating when his patient’s body is discovered completely drained of blood. His search leads him to the beautiful but frustrating Ravenna Drake, who refuses to stay away from the case or follow his instructions.

As more bloodless bodies surface, threats from secret societies and corrupt politicians force the dragon and the sorcerer to work together. If Ravenna and Ian can’t catch the killer, the people they love the most may be the next to die.

Excerpt

His foot reached out to blur the circle and the ghost changed. Agony forced every other emotion aside. He couldn’t breathe, a heavy weight settled on his chest. Panic set in as he wheezed, his heart racing the way hers had raced. Was he experiencing her last minutes or just panicking at the emotions? Could he trust himself? Darkness started to crowd the edges of his vision. Not enough air. Sweat broke out along his back. Somewhere, Cloak was saying something, but he couldn’t hear it over the pounding of blood in his ears. He was going to die here. The blackness got closer.

“No.” The flood of emotions stopped immediately, as Drake stepped in front of him. “That’s not how this works. You don’t get to scream at him.”

His head throbbed, stinging like acid dripping down his face, but he could breathe again. The darkness receded. The first thing he saw was Drake moving into the center of the stain, acting as if the blood wasn’t there.

“I’ll give you enough energy to manifest, but start screaming again and I will end you, even if we haven’t heard a damn thing you’ve got to say. Understand?” She paused, then reached her hand out. A shaft of sunlight came in through the window and her hand seemed to glow. Then the end of it disappeared, replaced with a chest. The shape grew outward, a filmy light turning into a woman. The process took less than a minute, and he heard the sheriff whisper to God.

“Dr. Chen, she can talk to you now.” Drake said it with a very deliberate emphasis on the word talk. Whatever the ghost intended, it wasn’t going to stand up to her. A deep surge of gratitude coursed through him.

  Soulful Return

Description Soulful Return by Fidelis O. Mkparu

“The hounding voice inside me would not let go.”

Thus begins the emotional journey of Afamefuna Onochie Nwaku, a Harvard-trained medical doctor with a career most can only dream of, a loving wife, and supportive family. Then, he receives a telephone call from his sister who lives in Nigeria that her life is being threatened.

Left with no other fair choice, Afam leaves behind his family, throwing his marriage into turmoil and risking the life he has built in Boston. Instead of the Nigeria that he loves, that he needs, he finds a land and people he barely recognizes waiting for him. Afam decides to stay but realizes that his future in Nigeria is as murky as the River-Niger after a torrential tropical rainfall.

As Afam sets out on a journey to reconnect with the family and heritage that he left behind, he must face new enemies in an increasingly corrupt Nigeria where many people see him as an American intruder. And through it all, he must fight to keep his family together—and alive.

Excerpt Soulful Return by Fidelis O. Mkparu

“While I wondered what to do, a burst of gunfire shattered the silence of the night as bullets shattered the beautiful glass windowpanes of my father’s house. My sister and I laid flat on the kitchen floor, the way we used to during the Nigerian Civil War. The rapid gunfire sounded as if it had come from a machine gun. Our conflict had escalated to a war, with only one side armed: Ejike and his men.

I thought about the sacrifices I had made leaving Boston to return home. Listening to my sister sobbing, I wished there was something I could have done to prevent what she was going through.

“Bury me next to Mom,” Adaku said, weeping uncontrollably. I put my arms around her and wiped her tears with my shirt sleeve.” Page 203

Review Soulful Return by Fidelis O. Mkparu

Guest Review by Laura

“It was the 1960s Nigerian Civil War that had brought us together. The bonds of our friendship were as strong as the strings that held our shared genes. War children, they had called us, but we were not at war.”

Afamefuna has a problem. See, he left his home country of Nigeria many years ago to attend medical school and become a doctor in America, but now he feels as though he is being called back home by a voice inside of his soul. Compounding that, Afamefuna's sister also calls him on his 60th birthday to inform him that she is in danger of losing their father's land if he does not come home to claim it.

Torn between the place that he was born, and the place that he has come to call home for many years, Afamefuna quarrels with his wife over his decision to return to Nigeria, especially as he has recently been offered the CEO position at the Boston hospital where he works. But, unable to ignore the voice, Afamefuna returns home, only to find that his beloved country has changed since he left.

Now plagued by corrupt politicians and greedy police officers, current day Nigeria makes Afamefuna feels as though he is a stranger in his own home. Adding to this, he must figure out how to protect his lands from his selfish cousin, who wants to reclaim land that his mother sold long ago.

This is a wonderful read that will make you feel as though you've been transported to Nigeria and can see the sights and hear the sounds of the country in person. Fidelis O. Mkparu's writing is lush, descriptive and beautiful. I really felt for Afamefuna as a character and the impossible choice that he had to make.

The choice between the family you're born into and the one you create can't be easy, and this book takes that into account in ways that are both beautiful and tragic.

He looks good. Too good.

I stare into Elijah’s Stevenson’s intense hazel eyes, and I’m transported back in time. His gaze has changed; it carries with it more confidence and self-assurance than the nervous tic he used to possess. His inability to maintain eye contact with me had always given me a thrill, made me feel special, gave me a sense of power. His ability to swing on an emotional pendulum was one of my most favorite things.

One second, he’d forget who I was, and we’d be just two friends, hanging out and enjoying the little moments, something other boys in my class never understood. They always looked to impress me with their over-the-top gestures. Not Elijah. Once he got over the nervousness and he relaxed enough to reveal himself, we shared some truly special moments. Moments I didn’t get to share with many other people, moments I know he didn’t share with anyone else.

And then there were moments like this.

Friends don’t greet one another this way. Yet, we were always only friends. When these greetings started, I never expected that they would last. I expected he’d want more. I waited. Waited for him to take charge, and every single time he retreated. Until that very last time.

But it’s been ten years, and I’m different. I’m a shell of the princess who ruled the hallways at Spring Hills High. The ten years were not nearly as kind to me as they’ve been to him.

He has grown into a man. A tall, dark, handsome man with designer clothes, a New York City strut, and a confidence he never possessed before. This time his gaze doesn’t falter. We lock eyes, and it’s me who looks away first.

I inhale the expensive cologne, and images of equally tall models and trust fund women on his arm invade. My feet retreat, taking with me the confidence I possessed a moment ago. I realize now that he’s in the driver’s seat and the best I can do is hold on tight and pray he leads us to the promised land.

EXCERPT:

Eva’s POV

Alex takes a step back toward the swinging kitchen doors and takes a phone from his pocket.

Worried he’ll call the cops, I hop off the barstool and walk toward him, hands up to show I’m harmless. “I was kidding,” I say.

He freezes, shoulders back. His chest is broad. A brick wall. That’s what running into him upstairs felt like. His arm had gone around me, strong and warm, pulling me out of the way and—whoa. Heat creeps into my cheeks, despite the coolness of the kitchen.

Squelching the impulse to fan myself, I shift my focus to Alex’s face. There’s a spark in his deep blue eyes, like he caught me ogling him, and my whole face ignites. Damn fair skin.

What the hell am I doing? This guy poses a threat to mine and Lor’s privacy. He could blab what happened here to everyone.

So why am I thinking of his warm, spicy scent?

I clear my throat. “We wouldn’t kill you. Right, Hector?”

“You’re safe, man.” Hector hands us each a glass of tea.

Alex’s posture relaxes some, but he doesn’t take a drink. He watches me sip mine. I switch from holding the glass with my left hand to my right and wonder if he noticed I don’t have a left index finger. If so, he’s hiding his reaction better than Nadine at ACR did.

He pockets his phone. “Okay, what shouldn’t I have seen or heard?”

“I’ll let her explain it,” I say as Jojo breezes back into the kitchen, NDA in hand. There are perks to having Lor’s personal assistant on the premises.

“Have a seat, Alex.” She sets the papers on the bar. “This is a standard non-disclosure agreement. The band’s keeping DeLorean’s injuries private while he’s recovering.”

Alex shrugs. “Fine. I won’t tell anyone. I don’t even have any idea what’s wrong with him.”

Jojo hands him a pen. “Good. By signing this, you also agree to not mention anything of DeLorean having a sister.”

“Why?” His eyes snap to me. “Don’t people know he has a sister?”

“No,” Hector tells him. “She works hard to stay anonymous. You must forget everything about her.” His tough guy act warms my heart, but he’s no bigger than me, with not much more muscle.

Alex, on the other hand is clearly shredded.

“Don’t worry. I can keep a secret.” His eyes are full of understanding.

“Great.” I gesture to the NDA. He breaks our gaze and reads it. And I mean, he really reads it, like word for word. Finally, he signs it and hands it to Jojo.

“Thank you, sir,” she says. “Eva, will you see Alex to the door please?”

A splash mark on his left boot catches my eye as we walk through the foyer. I point at the dark spot. “Oh no, some of the whiskey got on you. I can have Jojo arrange to replace them.”

“No, it’s fine.” He stops at the door. “But maybe I could get your number?” From the way his Adam’s apple bobs with a swallow, I sense he surprised himself as much as me.

“Um…” I’m tempted, but what is happening? He’s supposed to leave and forget me. I need to forget him. Our lives are so different. “I’m not sure it’s a good idea.” I open the door.

Disappointment flickers in his eyes. He nods and goes past me, through the open door. Heading for the black truck, he puts his cowboy hat on and glances over his shoulder at me with what could only be described as a wistful smile. I almost grin back but decide not to encourage him.
