Tish Tarragon is catering for a wedding, but the weekend goes from sweet to sour when a guest at the venue is poisoned.

Literary caterer and owner of Cookin' the Books cafe Tish Tarragon is pushing thoughts of her impending eviction aside to prepare an appetising welcome buffet for a wedding weekend at Abbingdon Green Bed and Breakfast. While there, Tish witnesses one of the guests, controversial TV chef and restaurant critic, Gunner Randall, threatening staff after missing breakfast and making do with a mushroom omelet.

When Randall is found dead the following day, it soon becomes clear that poisoned mushrooms were behind his demise. With no shortage of potential suspects and motives, can Tish and her new beau, Sheriff Clemson Reade, uncover who was enraged enough with the unsavoury star to silence him for good?

Check out this Mushroom Recipe!

 Mushroom Palmiers

Makes 40

2 tablespoons/30 grams unsalted butter

¾ pound/340 grams fresh mushrooms (white or brown) chopped

2 medium shallots, finely chopped

1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced

¾ teaspoon lemon juice

¾ teaspoon hot sauce (I use Frank’s)

¼ teaspoon salt

1 pack frozen puff pastry (two sheets), thawed

1 large egg

2 teaspoons water

Preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms and shallots and cook, stirring, until tender. Stir in thyme, lemon juice, hot sauce, and salt. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely.

Unfold one pastry sheet and place it on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.

Place half the mushroom mixture in the middle of the pastry and spread to within ½ inch/1.25 cm of the edges. Roll up both sides, width-wise, until the rolls meet in the middle. Repeat with the second puff pastry sheet and mushrooms.

Cut both rolled pastry sheets into approximately 20 slices.

In a small bowl, whisk egg and water. Brush over pastries.

Bake for 15–20 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

My Thoughts

Witching Moon by K.E.Bonner is a YA fantasy book about a young girl Anne, who was orphaned at birth and taken in by the midwife. She is happy with her family until a man, Phillip, is shipwrecked on the island she lives on, and she rescues him. He has been searching for her for a long time and tells her she is immortal and reborn. She has had dreams of a girl who looks like her, turns out the girl is her sister, and she wants Anne back with the family that she came from. Phillip tells her tales of a place called Amaranth. She is skeptical at first but eventually decides that she will go with Phillip. It is a journey fraught with danger as there are other entities that want to stop her.

The story takes place at the end of the Civil War in I believe is North Carolina and South Carolina. I could tell that when certain cities are mentioned. I found that interesting that a fantasy story about immortals can run parallel to the true event in American history, a novel concept.

I don't usually read YA books; they just do not hold my interest but this one was good. I am not a fan of fantasy either but the way the author wrote it it really didn't seem that fantastical. I do love the cover; I think that is what attracted me to the book plus the title intrigued me. This is a standalone book. A book worthy of anyone's bookshelf!

I give it four stars.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

The Perfect Girl by Kelly Golden Reveal! @KellyGolden1234

The Perfect Girl

He always said she was just a friend… What if she’d kill for more?

Sophie is perfect. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and when she smiles her teeth sparkle. And she cares; she’s passionate. Everybody loves her. So would I, except she’s my husband Mike’s best friend, and sometimes they seem a little too close for comfort.

This summer, Sophie is renting the grand house next door, bringing over fancy wine, offering to babysit our beautiful three-year-old daughter. It’s nice, actually. She’s smart and funny. Maybe the way she is with Mike – squeezing his arm, tilting her head when she laughs at his jokes – is just how she is with everybody.

But then she says something that sends a shiver down my spine – does she know something about me she shouldn’t?

And when her new husband arrives, looking slightly too familiar, I realise my time is running out. My baby girl and I are in terrible danger.

Sophie really is perfect. She has me perfectly trapped. And as my world begins to crumble, I start to wonder: does Sophie just want to steal my husband, or has she planned the perfect murder?

A completely unputdownable psychological thriller that will keep you flicking through your Kindle late into the night. Perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Guest List and anything by Louise Candlish, Erin Kelly or TM Logan.
