Mentors and Tormentors by Tim Jones, M.D. Book Tour! @Bookgal @therealbookgal

During a span of four inquisitive years, Wendall, an overly curious teen, has his view of the

world transformed by a colorful cast of small-town characters. Some are mentors; others are

tormentors. However, each one thoroughly comprehends a specific facet of human nature:

happiness, manipulation, and saying no, just to name a few.

But Wendall isn't just a passive student. He gets his hands dirty when his father transplants

the family to a rundown farm and soon finds himself up against a sadistic psychopath, a con

man, and a close friend who has attempted suicide.

Wendall's adventures add some fun and entertainment, which balance and reinforce the

seriousness of the lessons being taught throughout the story.

On writing:

How did you do research for your book?

No formal research. I pulled everything from my experiences and people I have met.

Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?

Hardest: Mrs. Brown – a combination of several incredible women.

Easiest: Rance Hill – an unforgettable, real-life monster.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

The idea of the book came from patients asking me in the ER from what book I learned the 3Bs (my own description of manipulation). I wrote my book for people like them – struggling to deal effectively with other people in their lives.

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Helping others and the potential to help people I will never know.

There are many books out there about self-help. What makes yours different?

Most self-help books are full of good advice and information but they are mundane and read like a college psychology text – not fun or particularly enjoyable to read. I have implanted my self-help lessons in a story line with memorable characters. Remember the characters, and you will remember the lessons.

What advice would you give budding writers?

Write and then rewrite and then refine it again. The more you write and review sometimes-embarrassing edited versions of your work, the better writer you will become.

Your book is set in Benson, Kansas. Have you ever been there?

It is set in a fictional town. I grew up in a town in northwest Oklahoma very similar to Benson.

In your book you state: The ability to say no is the most important skill in life.

Why is that? Because it is true.

If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?

Wendall Nichols of course.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

I am an ER physician.

How long have you been writing?

My first version of this book was written in 2008. It was terrible. In 2020, I got serious and changed the format completely. I must have written the equivalent of three books before finally getting the final product.

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?

Yes. Two cures: 1) Just type down the thoughts of whatever topic you are confronting without worrying about coming up with the perfect line. You can always sift through it later. 2) Walk on a treadmill and think about what you want to say. Then stop and jot down lines or segments of lines as needed.

What is your next project?

A follow up book: Mentors and Tormentors in Medicine – the story of Wendall’s medical school and residency adventures.

What genre do you write and why?

Self-help, to help others

What is the last great book you’ve read?

 Flight Plan by Brian Tracy

What is a favorite compliment you have received on your writing?

“I want my kids to read this book.”

How are you similar to or different from your lead character?

Pretty close. My temper is a little worse.

If your book were made into a movie, who would star in the leading roles?

Wendall: an unknown sixteen-year-old nerd

Mrs. Brown: Whoopi Goldberg

Shorty: Danny Devito

Slick n’ Greasy: Christopher Walken

If your book were made into a movie, what songs would be on the soundtrack?

Respect by Aretha Franklin.

What were the biggest rewards and challenges with writing your book?

Biggest reward: the genuine, appreciative feedback from readers.

Biggest challenge: finding the time to write.

In one sentence, what was the road to publishing like?

A journey of patience, frustration, and persistence.

What is one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring author?

Always focus on your readers and what information or emotions you want to convey to them.

Which authors inspired you to write?

Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Brian Tracy.

What is something you had to cut from your book that you wish you could have kept?

The “Everyone can be broken!” lesson from a Vietnam veteran. I had to limit the book to 75,000 words. I will have to include it on the website as a bonus chapter.

On rituals:

Do you snack while writing?

No snacking. I don’t even drink coffee.

Where do you write?

In my small study.

Do you write every day?

No. I work ER shifts ranging from 12 to 72 hours long.

What is your writing schedule?

2-4 days a week for 1-3 hours at a time.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?

Nope.

In today’s tech savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

Oh yes. I have been known to jump off the treadmill or pull over on the side of the road while driving to jot down a phrase of a couple of lines that popped into my head.

If you’re a mom writer, how do you balance your time?

I could never work as hard as most moms.

Fun stuff:

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

Back to ancient Babylon. I could grow penicillin mold on bread and become Nebuchadnezzar’s personal physician. Of course, I would have Mentors and Tormentors written on clay tablets (in English and Babylonian) to be discovered centuries later and published today.

Favorite travel spot?

Disney World in Florida

Favorite dessert?

Chocolate cake – any type.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, which 3 books would you want with you?

One Thousand and One Ways to Escape from a Deserted Island by Paul Rudd, The Joy of Alone Time by Suzy Sheffield, and The Holy Bible.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you? The scariest? The strangest?

The funniest thing I ever did was intentionally mark my computer answer sheet wrong on every answer of a chemistry test after learning just before the test that my “friends” had been cheating off me during previous tests. After they all turned in their computer sheets, I used my #2 pencil to “correct” my sheet. I made a 100% and they all got zeros. I never told them what happened, and of course they couldn’t admit or explain why they flunked the test without a single, correct multiple choice answer.

The scariest: I nearly died at age sixteen in a bunk house fire when the water-cooled air conditioner jammed during the middle of the night. I have no idea why I woke up in time to drag my unconscious brother out the door.

The strangest: A patient who died in the ER and was brought back by CPR and cardioversion somehow saw his four-year-old granddaughter in a neon purple, yellow polka dot dress in the waiting room.  She and her parents arrived while I was coding the old man in an isolated trauma room. He hated that dress. The second he was revived; he began cussing about her being out in the waiting room in that polka dot “clown dress.”

What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

Refuse to disown all my family and join the “enmeshed” (psychiatrist’s description) personality cult of my mother-in-law. I divorced her brain-washed daughter instead.

Any hobbies?

I collect coins – primarily pennies. I have since I was in elementary school.

If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?

That above all else, I want them to respect themselves – always and no matter what.

What is something you've learned about yourself during the pandemic?

I have very little tolerance for misinformation and blind allegiance to quack medical cures and treatments.

What TV series are you currently binge watching?

Picard

What is your theme song?

Three songs: Respect Yourself by The Staple Singers; You Can Do Magic by America; and Respect by Aretha Franklin.

What is your favorite thing to do in spring or summer? Pour concrete (for our trash dumpster, gate pads, etc.

All other seasons – cook fajitas, tacos, sweet & sour chicken and parmesan chicken.

What is a favorite holiday tradition (or memory)?

Putting out the Christmas lights in the yard. It takes two days.

What song is currently playing on a loop in your head?

None

What is something that made you laugh recently?

An SNL skit of The Last Supper and Trump

What is your go-to breakfast item?

Raisin bread.

What is the oldest item of clothing you own?

An overcoat from 1988 – which I have worn exactly twice.

Tell us about your longest friendship.

My older brother, Mark. I have known him my entire life. He was responsible for the first spanking I can remember from my parents. Mark convinced me to run away with him when I was three (he was four and a half). We made it about one block from the house before being re-captured.

What is the strangest way you've become friends with someone?

Literally ran into and knocked down a girl on a college campus sidewalk. Months later, she admitted to causing the collision on purpose in order to meet me.

Who was your childhood celebrity crush?

Jaclyn Smith of Charlie’s Angels. Sorry, not Farrah Fawcett.

Zora Books Her Happy Ever After
Taj McCoy

Publication date: April 25th 2023
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

“Doesn’t miss a romantic beat . . . McCoy expertly crafts a well-balanced love triangle between empathetic and passionate characters—and delivers plenty of comic relief in the form of Zora’s lovable matchmaking grandmother.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

A heart-pounding, curvy romance about an indie bookstore owner who finds herself in a love triangle when she meets the author she’s had a crush on for years…and his best friend.

Zora has committed every inch of her life to establishing her thriving DC bookstore, making it into a pillar of the community, and she just hasn’t had time for romance. But when a mystery author she’s been crushing on for years agrees to have an event at her store, she starts to rethink her priorities. Lawrence is every bit as charming as she imagined, even if his understanding of his own books seems just a bit shallow. When he asks her out after his reading, she’s almost elated enough to forget about the grumpy guy who sat next to her making snide comments all evening. Apparently the grouch is Lawrence’s best friend, Reid, but she can’t imagine what kind of friendship that must be. They couldn’t be more different.

But as she starts seeing Lawrence, and spending more and more time with Reid, Zora finds first impressions can be deceiving. Reid is smart and thoughtful—he’s also interested. After years of avoiding dating, she suddenly has two handsome men competing for her affection. But even as she struggles to choose between them, she can’t shake the feeling that they’re both hiding something—a mystery she’s determined to solve before she can find her HEA.

Conflicted, Zora pursed her lips, mulling over the possible outcomes of relinquishing her phone to her silly best friend.

“You know we both have work to get to, right? Time is money, my friend.” She

gestured again for the device like a parent or teacher ready to confiscate some contraband.

“Shut up, you’re already at work.” Blowing out a breath, she gave the phone to Emma and immediately regretted it when her bestie cackled with glee.

“This is about to be good,” she crooned, typing feverishly into the phone.

Zora craned her neck to see what Emma wrote, but she couldn’t read the message upside down and Emma turned the phone facedown in her lap when she finished.

“So what happened with Reid? Are we focusing on Lawrence now?”

“How am I supposed to focus on anything when you just sent something freaky in response to a dick pic?” Zora rolled her eyes when Emma’s only response was a pointed stare. “Ok, ok. I haven’t talked to Reid yet, but I think I’m leaning toward Lawrence. Fundamentally, I just don’t see how Reid and I could work if he’s really willing to steal from his own best friend.”

“Are you going to see him again?”

Zora nodded. “We have a dinner already planned this week. I think I might try to bring it up. See what he says.”

“Ballsy to go the confrontation route. I still think there’s some logical explanation for that. When are you supposed to see Lawrence again?”

“This weekend.”

Her phone pinged again, and Emma turned it over, her face lighting up like a display window. “Well, you should anticipate that he’s gonna try to blow your back out this time. You’re welcome, by the way.” She dropped the phone into Emma’s hands and sashayed out.

Zora hurriedly unlocked her phone to see what damage had been done.

Lawrence: I want to touch whatever will handle this. [photo attachment]

Zora: I have a spot you can aim for this time that needs some attention. I promise the more you hit it, the sweeter the sounds I’ll make for you. Think you’re up for the challenge, big boy? *blowing heart kiss emoji*

Lawrence: Damn, Zora, like that? I won’t stop until I do. *devil smiley face emoji*

“Hmm. I guess we’ll see,” Zora said wistfully. Looking out the window, she caught Emma’s eye and winked at her.

“So I’m not fired?” she called from the checkout counter.

“There’s always tomorrow!”

Jackson was there on the worst night of Harper’s life, and every day since. He’s everything she wants and needs, but is it worth blowing up their carefully balanced lives? Fans of Pippa Grant, Max Monroe, and Penny Reid will devour Sooner or Gator by Mae Harden, a steamy, small town, friends-to-lovers, roommates-to-lovers, forced proximity, beach romance.

JACKSON
“What do you need?”
That night was supposed to change everything… and it did. Just not in the way I had hoped.
I was there on the worst night of Harper’s life. The night her world came crashing down, bringing with it the crushing responsibility of raising her own sister when she was still practically a kid herself.
For seven years, I’ve been exactly what she asked for. I’ve been biding my time, but nothing stays the same—even on an island where it’s perpetually Christmas—and time is officially up.

HARPER
“A friend.”
The love of my life sleeps ten feet away from me, just on the other side of that wall. He doesn’t know how I feel about him, of course.
That would just be crazy.
Jackson has always been my rock, which is exactly why he can never know how desperately I want him.
Sure, every grin he throws in my direction sets off a storm surge down below and makes my heart race like sandpipers on the beach, but that’s not an excuse to blow up our carefully balanced lives… right?

Excerpt

Copyright 2023 Mae Harden

I’m on the verge of asking Haley why she bought more wine glasses when we have a perfectly good set in the cabinet, but as she hands me one, I realize they’re only mostly stemless.
“You know most people use bottle toppers to save their wine, right?” I laugh, eyeing the stubby stem with its rubber gasket before pushing it into the opening of what is now, quite clearly, a bottle not meant for sharing. Experimentally, I tip it sideways and watch an inch of deep burgundy liquid pool in the bottom of the glass.
“Bottle toppers, much like bookmarks, are for quitters,” Haley says with a mischievous grin. “Besides, aren’t you always harping on about how important it is to finish what you start?” She looks extremely proud of herself as she tips back a hearty glug of cheap Cabernet.
“But, more importantly, you’re both wrong. Trailer Park Shark is the one with Tara Reid, but it was the douche-canoe developer who flooded the trailer park, and I’m ninety-nine percent sure she’s the S.B.T.S.”
“Back up.” Tizzy raises a hand like she’s about to ask the teacher for a bathroom pass. “You know I can’t with your movie shorthand.”
“Sole Big Tittied Survivor,” Haley sighs heavily.
“Okay, but that’s not exactly a common abbreviation,” Tizzy replies, copying Hayley’s sigh as dramatically as she can possibly manage.
Some people have incredible memories for languages or history, but no one can match Haley when it comes to movies that came out decades before she was even born.
The windows and doors are open to let in the spring air, and over the cacophony of tree frogs croaking and crickets chirping away outside, I hear car tires crunch on the gravel drive.
Craning my neck as far as I dare, I spot a familiar, black jeep. It’s more rust than paint thanks to the salty Florida air, but as its tires come to a halt in their well-worn spots, I can’t help grinning. In the fading light of the orange sky, the profile of my other best friend, Jackson Beauregard, is clearly visible as he climbs out and grabs his things.
Tizzy quirks an eyebrow at me as I straighten Haley goes on. “…and the poor-man’s Tommy Lee Jones, a.k.a. Robert Davi did not appear in Trailer Park Shark. He was, however, in the 2011 classic Swamp Shark where he starred opposite a busty blonde played by the O.G. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I swear to God, if one of you so much as whispers the name Sarah Michelle Gellar…” My little sister waits for one of us to match her encyclopedic knowledge, but we all know it’s not going to happen.
“Kristy Swanson! Come on! Okay, extra credit points: Robert Davi was one of three villains in which beloved 80s adventure movie?”
Tizzy and I stare blankly at each other while simultaneously tipping our bottles toward the sky.
“The Goonies,” a deep voice supplies from just outside. “Come on, kid. Give us a hard one next time.”
Grinning, I tip my head backward over the couch just in time to see Jackson coming through the screen door. “‘Bout time,” I sass. “We were about to start without you.”
“No, you weren’t.” Jackson laughs, shaking his head as he drops his keys in the bowl where they always go. He hangs his backpack on its hook and drops onto the couch next to me, making me bounce as all six-and-a-half feet of him bottoms out the springs.
"Well... we had considered it."
“What are we watching this week?” Jackson asks, changing the subject with about as much subtlety as a Horatio roller skating down Main Street in his favorite candy cane hot pants.
“Swamp Shark,” Haley votes.
“Literal flying sharks too much for you tonight?” Jackson chuckles.
“Maybe once I’ve polished this off…” Haley replies, raising her wine and its extra classy attachment in a toast. “But Kristy Swanson with a shotgun?” She lets out an exaggerated whistle. “I’m always in the mood for that.”
I snort. I can’t help it. “Yeah, who doesn’t love a busty blonde armed to the teeth?”
Jackson twists the top off a beer and shrugs dispassionately as he stares down at it. “I could take ‘em or leave ‘em, honestly.”
Tizzy leans over, her expression conspiratorial and eyes sparkling with mischief. Oh, fuck. Here we go, I groan inwardly. “And which part of that is uninspiring to you, Jackson? The ‘blonde’ bit or the ‘armed to the teeth’ bit? Because we know you don’t have issues with the ‘busty’ bit.”
“Fucking bluetooth speakers,” Jackson mutters, suddenly finding the label of his beer bottle utterly fascinating, but Haley is all ears.
“Wait… what happened? What’d I miss?”
“Nothing,” I say quickly, feeling my own face burn with embarrassment, even though I was just an innocent bystander in all this.
“Jackson forgot to disconnect the living room speakers from his phone last night… didn’t he?” Tizzy tilts her head, locking her eyes on six-and-a-half feet worth of blushing man.
Jackson clears his throat and gets to his feet. "Anyone want a glass of water?" Without waiting for an answer, he disappears, no doubt to let Tizzy get this out of her system.
"Tizz..." I start.I know what she’s getting at and it’s nothing new.
"Come on, Harper. Brunette roommate gets lonely and crawls into bed? You still seriously think that had nothing to do with you?"
"Of course, I do." Admittedly, it would be easier if he was into something less... can porn be wholesome?
Tizzy would like everyone to believe Jackson and I are star crossed lovers, destined to fall for each other in some kind of epic love story that spans decades and generations and all of time and space.
I think Tizzy needs a new vibrator and a subscription to Passionflix, but I’m only a wimple away from making my vow of celibacy official, so what do I know?

Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine by Greta Lynn Uehling Book Spotlight and Excerpt!

Publisher: Cornell University Press

Publication Date: February 15, 2023

Price: Hardcover $125.00 / Paperback $31.95

ISBN-13: 978-1501768484 (210 pages)

Everyday War provides an accessible lens through which to understand what noncombatant civilians go through in a country at war.

What goes through the mind of a mother who must send her child to school across a minefield or the men who belong to groups of volunteer body collectors? In Ukraine, such questions have been part of the daily calculus of life. Greta Uehling engages with the lives of ordinary people living in and around the armed conflict over Donbas that began in 2014 and shows how conventional understandings of war are incomplete.

In Ukraine, landscapes filled with death and destruction prompted attentiveness to human vulnerabilities and the cultivation of everyday, interpersonal peace. Uehling explores a constellation of social practices where ethics of care were in operation. People were also drawn into the conflict in an everyday form of war that included provisioning fighters with military equipment they purchased themselves, smuggling insulin, and cutting ties to former friends. Each chapter considers a different site where care can produce interpersonal peace or its antipode, everyday war.

Bridging the fields of political geography, international relations, peace and conflict studies, and anthropology, Everyday War considers where peace can be cultivated at an everyday level.

"Greta Uehling sensitively, and with nuance, highlights the often-misunderstood early stages of the war in Ukraine and the toll it has taken on its people. In her exploration of the Ukrainian conflict and thoughtful consideration of contextually complex language and culture, she brings many universal struggles to light." -- Maureen P. Flaherty, University of Manitoba, author of Peacebuilding with Women in Ukraine

Greta Uehling teaches for the Program in International and Comparative Studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she is affiliated with the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Falling Again

A Buckeye Falls Novel #3

by Libby Kay

Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

Welcome back to Buckeye Falls, Ohio!
Does this small town mayor have the political savvy to negotiate his way back into his wife’s heart?

From the outside, Mayor Anthony Snyder and his wife Natalie have it all. Adorable children, a lovely home, and a never-ending supply of free food from the local diner. But behind closed doors, this duo struggles to stay connected. The sparkle they show Buckeye Falls has turned a little dull on the home front.

Over the last decade, things became hectic in the Snyder household. Anthony was elected to office, following in his father’s footsteps. Unfortunately, he’s reminded regularly that these are big shoes to fill. Being the best mayor takes a lot of time—time he’s not spending with his family.

Natalie prides herself on being everything to everyone, but the job of a wife hasn’t been smooth sailing. Wrapped up in her own growing business and their kids’ activities, her time with Anthony has dwindled faster than her secret stash of Halloween candy. Natalie longs for quality time with the man she loves, but it never seems to be in the cards.

A chance to visit their family lake house promises a week away from it all, but can these two reconnect when there’s no distractions? Or is it time for these high achievers to admit that love might be the one thing they can’t master?

With a little help from the residents of Buckeye Falls, this power couple will find their way back to happily ever after.

Falling Again is the third book in the Buckeye Falls series, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone read. After all, who doesn’t deserve to fall in love again?

Libby Kay lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband. When she’s not writing, Libby loves reading romance novels of any kind. Stories of people falling in love nourish her soul. Contemporary or Regency, sweet or hot, as long as there is a happily ever after—she’s in love!

When not surrounded by books, Libby can be found baking in her kitchen, binging true crime shows, or on the road with her husband—traveling as far as their bank account will allow.

Writing is a solitary job, and Libby loves to hear from readers. Reach out, ask questions, and review her stories anytime. She’d love to hear from you.
