Girls and Their Horses by Eliza Jane Brazier Book Spotlight!

About GIRLS AND THEIR HORSES by Eliza Jane Brazier (Berkley Hardcover; June 6, 2023)

Set in the glamorous, competitive world of showjumping, a novel about the girls who ride, their cutthroat mothers, and a suspicious death at a horse show…from the author of Good Rich People

When the nouveau riche Parker family moves to an exclusive community in the heart of Southern California, they believe it’s their chance at a fresh start. Heather Parker is determined to give her daughters the life she never had—starting with horses.

She signs them up for riding lessons at Rancho Santa Fe Equestrian, where horses are a lifestyle. Heather becomes a “Barn Mom,” part of a group of wealthy women who hang at the stables, drink wine, and prepare their daughters for competition.

It’s not long before the Parker family is fully enmeshed in the horse world—from mean girl cliques to barn romance and dark secrets. With the end of summer horse show fast approaching, the pressure is on, and these mothers will stop at nothing to give their daughters everything they deserve.

Before the summer is over, lies will turn lethal, accidents will happen, and someone will end up dead.

Excerpt

Maple stepped into the cool shade of the breezeway. The horses stuck their heads over the doors and watched her. One noticed the carrots and whinnied. Then they all started whinnying, pacing around their stalls and tossing their heads. One even bucked and cantered a tight circle. They were freaking out. It was kind of scary.

Maple had a sense, always, that something terrible was about to happen now. Right now. She called it prophecy; her therapist called it generalized anxiety disorder.

"What are you doing?" A girl slipped out of a stall and into the aisleway.

She seemed older than Maple, but she was small and delicate. She was wearing a bright red coat, like a girl marked for death in a horror movie. But she had the face of the killer.

"You can't be here," the girl continued. "Didn't you read the signs?" She noticed the carrots. "Oh my God! Are you giving the horses carrots? Don't you know you can't do that? They could have Cushing's disease. Or bite you. I know this girl, and her mom got her finger bitten off by their horse, and the horse swallowed it. Seriously, I'm not fucking kidding."

Maple dropped the heavy bag on the ground. Her whole face burned. She wanted to run, but her legs felt weak. She was dizzy. She wished her mom were there.

Heather never seemed to be bothered by drama. In fact, she often seemed drawn to it. If there was a kerfuffle at a restaurant, if gunshots rang out, Heather drifted steadily toward it, clutching her purse and smiling benignly. Can I help?

"My mom-," Maple started.

"You need to leave," the girl said. "Seriously, you're actually trespassing. And why are you wearing riding clothes? It's Monday."

Maple burned up even more. She'd tried to warn her mother about this, when she had dressed Maple up like a doll.

A woman who must have been the other girl's mom appeared. She shared her daughter's red hair.

"What are you doing here?" she said. She also shared her attitude.

"My mom's here," Maple said, not answering the question. "I have to go get her." She took off like a lunatic toward the offices. She abandoned the carrots in the barn aisle.

"Hey!" the girl yelled after her. "You can't run around horses!"

Maple found her mom practically in the middle of breaking and entering. It would never have occurred to Heather that the office wasn’t hers to open.

"Why are you running?" Heather asked, trying a combination on the lock. "I was thinking I could write them a note. I think this is the main office. I've already left seven voice messages."

Heather had been trying to contact this barn since before the move. Instead of giving up, she got only more determined.

Maple was breathing hard. She was on the verge of tears. "They said we can't be here!" Her voice rose precipitously. "They said we're trespassing."

Heather perked up. "Who said that? Is someone here?"

Heather started in the direction Maple had come from, but then the red-haired woman appeared, matching daughter in tow. When she saw Heather, she smiled so fast it was like a quick draw in a shoot-out.

"Why, hello there!" Her eyes ran fast over Heather, like she was calculating the value of everything she saw-Heather herself included. "I'm Pamela and this is my daughter, Vida."

"I'm Heather. Parker. And this is my daughter Maple."

"I was just telling your sweet girl that unfortunately this barn isn't open to the public." Pamela was holding Vida's hand, their fingers laced, like they were best friends instead of mother and daughter.

"Oh, we're not the public," Heather said. They had been rich for a short amount of time, but Heather had adjusted beautifully. "We're here to sign up for riding lessons."

"It's Monday," Pamela said. "No one comes in on Mondays. And this isn't a lesson barn. They don't have school ponies or summer camps."

Heather stepped forward, crossed her arms neatly. Since she had become rich, Maple's mother had changed, although not completely. The root of what she had always been was still there. But she had become more herself.

"We just bought a house a mile from here," Heather said, as if that had anything to do with it.

But Maple could see Pamela's expression change. It softened a little, like the Parkers were closer to belonging not just there but everywhere.

"How lovely! That makes us neighbors," she said. "But I will warn you, this probably isn't the barn for you."

Maple knew the woman couldn't have tempted her mother more.

"There's a good riding school in Olivenhain. I can give you their number."

"No, thank you. I like this one. It's closer to our house. I want Maple to be able to walk to the barn if she wants to," Heather said. As if Maple would ever walk a mile. "Would you mind taking my number? Then you can pass it along to the owners for me. I've been trying to reach them."

"Kieran Flynn," Pamela said, like the name meant something to everyone. "He's the owner and the head trainer."

Pamela clearly didn't want to take her number, but Heather just waited. Pamela finally took out her phone. She typed Heather's number in quickly.

Then she added, "This is a show barn. Last year, we outperformed every barn at the Southern California International Horse Show. We demand total commitment to the program. We're a very tight community. You have to have your own horses, and your horses have to be in the training program. That means all of your rides are supervised by a trainer, and your horse is schooled by a Professional rider. It's really not a place for fun."

"Good," Heather said, taking Maple's hand like she was aping Pamela. "We don't want to have fun."

There was nothing Heather loved more than the word no.

Saving Christ: Starway Seven by Francis T. Perry Williams Book Tour!

Saving Christ: Starway Seven

by Francis T. Perry Williams

Genre: Historical SciFi Time Travel Romance

Saving Christ is a love story between Jesus and a modern-day woman sent back in time. Time travel sends the woman back to the last seven days of Jesus’ life from a modern viewpoint.

This tale is a new telling of the greatest story ever told, in religious science fiction, the first of its kind. The story combines the thrill of a modern spy novel with the allure of a sweet love story. Part science fiction, part historical fiction, part Christian fiction and part romance novel, Saving Christ defies categorization.

In one aspect, this book is comparable to Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord. Like Rice, Williams had to fill in huge gaps in Jesus’ personal life that are not reported in the Bible or any other texts. Saving Christ paints a vivid picture of what it might have been like to walk with Jesus and talk with Jesus in real life, 2,000 years ago. We invite you to read along and discover the human side of Jesus.

Jesus stopped for a second and looked up at the sky. He closed his eyes and seemed to be listening to someone or something. Was it his Father? A moment later, he opened his eyes and looked toward the Temple as if it were calling to him. “We must return to the Temple. There are people there who need me.”

They turned around and headed back the way they had come.

“You spend a lot of time there,” Jennifer said. “I sense that it is a very special place for you. You feel like you belong there, and it seems to be your true home.”

“That is very insightful, Jennifer. I go there almost every day to teach and sometimes to heal. Now is the time for healing. There are people waiting for us and for the love of God to bring them the peace they so desperately need.”

Jesus and Jennifer returned to the Temple area and found it much cleaner now, especially with all the sellers and animals gone. A crowd of people quickly surrounded Jesus. Jennifer stepped back out of the way, but curiosity kept her close enough to see what would happen. She could not describe the feeling. It was as if something special was in the air almost like electricity, although it had not been invented yet, and there were no clouds in the sky that might indicate that lightning was in the atmosphere.

“I’ll wait over here,” she told Jesus. “Please help your people. I will be overjoyed just to observe and witness the love they have for you.”

“Tonight, just you and me and the stars. And nobody to separate us,” he assured her.

Francis T. Perry Williams is the author of Pollen and the Ring of Harmony and Saving Christ: Starway Seven.

He attended San Diego State University for a degree in drama with minors in art and music where he wrote, directed and acted. Upon graduation, he appeared on several sitcoms including Happy Days, Bosom Buddies, Laverne and Shirley and MASH, in addition to writing one of the Laverne and Shirley episodes.

Abadon (Sympathy For the Devil 2): Abadon is a Rock god… literally. He’s discovered a way to ease his depression -- mindless sex with complete strangers. He’s becoming obsessed with the snarly reporter who’s covering him and decides showing Charle how to party will be the perfect distraction from the one who got away. But Charle’s getting out of control. Abadon is falling hard, but Charle just wants to have fun.
Rise By Sin (Sympathy For the Devil 3): Python, the god of the moon, is more than just the quiet guitar god from the band. In another time, in another place, he was pure Sin. Orion’s not like the other boys -- in fact he was born a she, but he never let that get in the way of a good time. Now he’s sure he’s met the man of his dreams… he just never expected that man to be a god.
Bang One Out (Sympathy For the Devil 4): Being on the flight crew on a private jet will give Aika a lot of material to work with… like the sexy-hot crazies from the band Abadon. But what’s a woman to do when the man she’s crushing on big time saves her life -- and claims to be an ancient god?
Mischief Managed (Sympathy For the Devil 5): Apollon, the god of mischief, wants to get back to living his best life, but the pale god can’t catch a break. The FBI is asking questions about the plane crash, social media is amazed the band survived, and their would-be killers are getting closer. But even he can fall in love… which begs the question, can Mischief ever be managed?

Excerpt from Charle
Warning: Language

"You just plain suck." Charle Lexington stared at his ex, and the bitch he'd cheated on him with... and the friend of the bitch he had cheated with's best friend, whom he was also fucking.
Now would be a good time to let the floor open up and swallow him whole.
"Maybe if you learned to do that a bit better, I wouldn't have to go and find Andy and Candy."
Instead of opening his mouth and letting the asshole have it with both barrels, Charle rolled his eyes, crossed his arms over his Iron Man Pony T-shirt, and silently imagined the worst happening to his ex.
Then something, a strange awareness in him, poked him hard in the self-esteem. He couldn't let the spray tanned asshole get away with embarrassing him like this. He was better than that wannabe Dr. Dre any three hundred sixty four and three-fourths days of the year. He wanted war? He was going to get it.
"Well, if you had something a little bit bigger than a thumb to practice on, maybe I'd be better," he mused aloud, giving Dick a bright smile that showed all of his surgically corrected teeth. "I'm not saying you have a small dick, but when the whole thing fits in my mouth and can't even reach the middle of my tongue... well..." He let his words trail off as he grinned at his ex-Dick. "You're the only Richard I know who wants to be called Dick. Overcompensating much?"
"Bitch," Dick growled, rising to his feet in an attempt to be intimidating, but it was kind of hard to be intimidating when you had to wear lifts in your classic throwback Adidas to reach the coveted six-foot height... a height that guaranteed that not too many people would notice his receding hairline.
Except Charle was six-feet three inches in his bare feet. Sometimes life was good.
"Yes, I am," Charle purred. "I learned it from watching you."
"Like anyone else would want you," Dick growled as the twins twittered from behind their hands, their matching neon nails making glowing trails that threatened to give him a headache in the low light of the venue.
The Stage was a small studio/auditorium that catered to the elite in the rock world. Everyone from the Stones to the Who, from Prince to Snoop Dogg had played private gigs there. Usually the invitees received an email on the same day as the event, inviting them to come and take place in the making of history. Established bands used the venues to announce tours, introduce their hottest new discoveries, showcase new or replacement talents, or to just kick back and jam without the complications of stage make-up, rock personas, and screaming groupies to get in the way of the fun. Tonight Abadon had taken the stage to announce the last leg of their American tour and that they would be taking a small hiatus afterwards to create a new sound.
Charle had gotten his email late, as he was out interviewing the latest stripper- turned-female-rap-sensation, and didn't get to check his emails on his phone until his three hours were up with Miss Thang.
She was surprisingly intelligent and forthright about her career goals, her past, and what she intended for the future. She also demanded his full attention as she strutted around the basement studio of her new house, complete with stripper pole, while they talked politics and fashion.
He had raced to get to The Stage and had missed the performance and announcement by minutes. But that was okay. He could still interview those who were invited, pick up a press packet, and watch The Other, Abadon's warm-up band, perform. The Other was a small alternative rap band, kind of like Twenty One Pilots, that was gaining quite the name for itself. The members were entertaining as hell to watch on stage. They kind of made the audience feel like they were part of one big joke instead of condescending to them. Charle didn't think that Dick would be here or, with misplaced sarcasm and snark, he would intercept Charle on his way to find a seat.
"Oh, a lot of people want me, Dick," he snickered, while trying to control the inner bullshit meter that was ringing quite loudly in his head. "It's hard to be so sexy."
Charle had been dateless and even worse, sexless since he discovered Dick fucking the twins in the backseat of his car years ago. His '69 Pontiac Firebird was his baby and to have it so defiled by that fool in the velour sweat suit sitting there...
He mourned the abuse of his car far more than he mourned the explosion of their relationship. He did have fun marching up to his studio apartment and activating his LoJack, reporting that his car was the victim of a break-in, which it technically was. He had never given Dick the keys or permission to even breathe on his car, let alone set his cheap materialistic ass inside of it.
Dick had not been amused when the police showed up and arrested him for breaking and entering, public nudity, lewd behavior, and engaging in sexual acts in public. Charle got to play shocked lover who had no idea that his boyfriend of three years had broken into his car and was cheating on him.
The officers, who were very sympathetic even if subtly grossed out, were all too happy to arrest Dick and talk to Charle about pressing charges. No, Dick didn't live with him. He did not have permission to be at Charle's apartment or in his car. He was a reporter who had been covering Aerosmith all week and had only moments before arrived at his home. See? There was his plane ticket and photographs of him and Steven Tyler at breakfast that morning. They all agreed that it was a passive-aggressive way to break up and from the way Dick was cursing at him, it could turn violent. Tall, thin Charle would be no match for his thicker, angry ex in a fight, so maybe he should go upstairs and let another nice officer take his statement and see about a restraining order.
Charle did that before he took his car to get deloused and detailed.
Dick's shocked face would have been almost comedic if it wasn't so tragic as a trio of officers cuffed and stuffed him in the back of a police car with just his long T-shirt covering his modesty while the twins were taken away in a second car with a lesser charge of accessory to breaking and entering and public lewd behavior.
Ever since then, he had been singing Pink's You and Your Hand Tonight to himself. Then there was his Bob... Battery Operated Boyfriends were the best. They didn't cheat on you or defile your most prized possession, and when you were done with them, you cleaned them off and threw them in a drawer.
Now he was kind of regretting that as he really didn't have a final comeback for Dick or the ability to lie worth a damn.
"You couldn't get laid if you bend over, spread your cheeks, and tattoo cum dump around your asshole. You are pathetic, Charle, a pathetic sad, lonely old man in a twig of a body."
Charle could respond in kind or he could be mature, walk away, ignore Dick, and try to enjoy the music that was coming.
And there was the third option, throwing a punch.
Charle decided to throw a damn punch. The drink that Dick spilled all over him and his companions was just a bonus as far as he was concerned.
In the midst of the squealing and bodies flying around -- the twins -- and blood gushing from noses -- well, one nose that belonged to Dick -- Charle ducked down and slipped away in the darkness of the gathering crowd.
No one in their right mind would think that prim and proper Charle Lexington would throw a punch much less get into any conflict. Charle was considered a good guy, nonconfrontational, maybe even sweet and innocent, definitely not one to start trouble. Security moved right past him and he ducked into a quiet dark room, hoping to find a place to chill out while Dick ether settled down or left. The rich producer had already taken a beating in the papers after his arrest and the reasons for it were made public and even though years had passed, he couldn't afford another scandal, especially one involving a so prim and proper, upstanding gay black man like his poor cuckolded ex.
He had no idea the room was occupied until the first moaned complaint reached his ears.

Drew stared out over the water as he spoke, thinking about his life, how lucky he was that he could be himself, and how so many guys in his position couldn’t do that. He was surprised when Kevin leaned toward him and rested his head against Drew’s shoulder.

“Drew?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think there’s any hope for me?”

Drew chuckled. “Sometimes I wonder if there’s any hope for me. But I’m still breathing, and you know what they say—where there’s life, there’s hope.”

“Yeah. Hope.” Kevin got quiet, and Drew waited. “I’ve got to find some hope,” he finally said.

“What do you want your hope to look like?” Drew asked, wondering what Kevin would say.

In a voice that was almost a whisper, Kevin said, “Oh, I dunno. Six feet two inches, light brown hair, and pale blue eyes, all in the best-looking package I’ve ever seen. And a heart as big as Texas.”

Something clicked in Drew’s chest, and he turned and took Kevin’s face in his hands, then kissed him. At first, Kevin seemed surprised, but then he moved into Drew and kissed him back.

Drew wanted that kiss to go on forever. It was without a doubt the most passionate kiss anyone had ever given him, and it was delicious and warm and sweet. He could feel his pulse throbbing in his temples and his heartbeat quickening, and all he could think about was Kevin naked in his bed, skin against skin and their arms locked around each other.
