Out of Sight by Anna Legat Blog Tour!

Out of Sight

On the morning after his thirtieth wedding anniversary, Stewart Harding is found dead. He was an arrogant and thoroughly unpleasant man and there is no shortage of suspects, but all of them have firm alibis. In any case, everything points towards it being an opportunistic killing linked to a robbery.

Newly promoted DI Mark Webber is assigned as the SIO with Gillian Marsh overseeing the investigation. However, when her mother dies, she takes a leave of absence and lets Webber continue on his own.

Webber is making good progress until his colleague – and secret lover – DC Erin Macfadyen disappears without a trace. Webber’s world falls apart.

DCI Marsh cuts her bereavement leave short to take over the investigation into Stewart Harding’s death and to track down her missing officer.

There is no doubt that she will find Harding’s killer, but will she find Erin and are the two cases connected?

Nora didn’t wait to find out what he was planning to do with it. She turned tail and ran out of the room, flinging the door shut in his face.

He threw it back open. He was hot on her heels.

She leapt up the stairs, two at a time, losing her footing just before reaching the landing. He was larger and also heavier than her. He too staggered a couple of times, earning her a few precious seconds. When she tripped, he saw his chance. He scrambled to his feet and threw his weight at her. He missed. She was up and running. Furious, he swung the poker at her. It caught her on the calf. She felt sharp pain, but did not give in to it.

She burst into the bathroom. Slid the bolt across. Slumped on the floor, pressing her back against the door. The latch was made of stainless steel, but it was no match for his wrath and the power with which he kept ramming into the door. Sooner or later it would give.

‘Open the f*cking door! Let me in!’ Each command was followed with another slam at the door which was beginning to ease off its frame. The hinges rattled, screws loosening. Nora’s body jerked with every new assault.

The dogs started barking, joining in with their master.

She bound her hands under her knees. Her fingers felt wetness. She examined them: they were bloodied. Only now did she notice that the blood from her torn calf was dripping onto the bathroom floor tiles. The sight of her own blood scared her, but surprisingly she wasn’t feeling any pain.

She was lucky to have her mobile in her pocket. With her shaking, bloody fingers she scrolled down her contacts and selected speed-dial. She waited. And waited. It wasn’t as speedy as she needed it to be. But this was the middle of the night – some people put their phones on silent at night. She considered hanging up and calling 999.

A click of the phone being picked up at the other end interrupted the ringing tone. She listened no more and shouted, ‘Come now! Please! He’s going to kill me!’

When you stare into the face of evil, don't flinch.

Memoirs of a Death Row Inmate

by Daniel Donovan

Genre: Psychological Thriller

James Bryant is a relatively unknown detective with an otherwise average career. But for one detail: he caught a notorious serial killer from the Midwest. A psychopath, dubbed the South Side Sadist, Richard Allen Fenton, is locked up in the El Dorado Correctional Facility, awaiting his execution on Christmas day.

Though a relatively unknown serial killer, Fenton is a master of manipulation whose killing spree lasted over three decades, spanned five states, and claimed eleven victims...so far. Although the two have not been in the same room since the final appeal, Fenton has one more game to play. Striking a deal with the Department of Justice, Fenton agrees to reveal the identities and locations of his other victims. He asks for only one thing in return; to have the cop who put him away take down a series of confessions, find the bodies, and write all of Fenton's misdeeds into a three-volume set to be published for the world to see.

Bryant, a functioning alcoholic battling his own demons, is offered a choice; take the deal or hand in his badge. Against his will and at the detriment of his ever-degrading mental health, Bryant agrees. Backed by a task force with the FBI, Bryant is forced into weekly meetings at the Correctional Facility with Fenton, who torments Bryant at every turn. While Bryant thinks he is just "serving his time," Fenton has other ends in mind.

In their regularly scheduled meetings in the prison, Fenton tortures Bryant with the horrifying details of his murderous career, while an unhinged disciple of Fenton's seeks to wreak havoc on the task force on the outside. In prison or out, Bryant fights to stay one step ahead of the killers as they seek to destroy his life and that of everyone around him.

Twenty minutes; that’s how long it took to get from the front door, through security and down to maximum lock-up. They had a special interview room set up for me to use. I was glad they did, because I didn’t want to walk down the hall past Dennis Rader, the Carr brothers, and a long line of other sick individuals just to talk with the sickest of them all. The hallway leading to the room was even more depressing than the entryway.

It was meant to contain hardened criminals who were so fucked up they kept the lights as dim as possible to hide the glow of insanity radiating from their eyes. This was no place for any decent human being to spend their time. The lights only got dimmer the further I walked down the hallway. The lights flickered, creating an ominous atmosphere punctuated only by the soft voices of the incarcerated, carrying from their various cells. Ahead of me, a three inch thick metal door complete with a six by six inch impenetrable glass window at head height waited for me. My heart started racing, and my throat tightened.

I could see, through the small shatterproof glass window leading into the interview room that the source of my pain was waiting for me inside. A chill ran down my spine as the electronic lock popped allowing the door to slide open. The man chained to the table didn’t turn to acknowledge me as I stepped into the room.

“I’ll be right outside in case he tries anything,” the guard cautioned. I nodded to him and stepped along the left wall. I circled the room until I was on the opposite side of the table from the man in the brown prison jumpsuit. I leaned back against the wall and set the briefcase down beside me.

I finally raised my eyes to meet those of my cell-mate. Behind black and gray, bushy eyebrows shone the dark brown eyes of malice, radiating from the face of pure evil. The large figure was partially hidden by long, unkempt salt and pepper hair, hanging along either side of his face and obscuring his hulking shoulders. The face, if clean shaven, would have caused most people to flinch and look away; the beard, fortunately, hid some of the menacing lines of his permanent smirk. He sat with his hands cuffed together and the handcuff chains ran through a ring on the table, keeping his hands together. He laced his fingers from one hand through the fingers of the other and stared as if he was contemplating his next ten moves.

Daniel Donovan was born in Missouri and raised in Kansas for most of his life. He always had a passion for creative writing, but it wasn’t until he spent four years in law enforcement that the spark for crime thrillers was really ignited. Donovan aims to bring his readers into the novel by incorporating real-life details into his works of fiction while giving readers the thrills and chills they seek.

Zara Phillips loves two things: her husband Van, and the band she created with her brother, Reverend Sister. To her, her life is perfect until she discovers that her high school sweetheart husband is cheating on her. The paparazzi are relentless, forcing a devastated and heartbroken Zara to stay hidden until the record label demands she shoot a video for the band's new single, driving her out of seclusion.

Our lives, Van’s and mine, are intertwined in so many ways. From the time he joined my silly little garage band to the day we took our friendship to the next level. Everything we did, we did as a team with people around us and now those people depend on us. Reverend Sister isn’t Van’s or mine, it’s ours and only works together if we’re in it together and right now I don’t want to be anywhere near him.

By the time the tears start to fall, and I mean really fall, I’m halfway home, and my phone is ringing with Van calling. The alerts are going off like crazy because the paparazzi are relentless and insist on snapping pictures of people. And when they put them online they add the most ridiculous headlines, except these, are spot on and tell people about my impending breakdown. It’s coming. I can feel the gut-wrenching ache, my heart being ripped out of my chest and every muscle and bone in my body in pain. The takeover is slow and almost alien-like. I can feel it in my toes, moving its way up my legs. It’ll take some time for my brain to really figure it out. For the light bulb to go off that my marriage is over.

Witches of Bone Hill by Ava Morgyn Book Review! @StMartinsPress

Cordelia Bone's meticulously crafted life and career in Dallas are crashing down around her thanks to a philandering husband with criminal debts.

When her older, carefree sister, Eustace—a cannabis grower in Boulder, calls to inform her the great aunt they never met has died and they must travel to a small town in Connecticut to deal with the estate, she sees an opportunity to unload the house and save herself.

But once there, the sisters learn they are getting much more than they bargained for. The Victorian mansion they stand to inherit is bound in a dynasty trust controlled by their late aunt's aging attorney who insists they inhabit the house and retain it but keeps them in the dark about the peculiar rituals of their ancestors. Not to mention a sexy, tattooed groundskeeper with a shrouded past who refuses to leave the carriage house and a crypt full of dead relatives looming at the property line.

As both women grapple with their current predicament, they come face to face with a haunting family secret, the truth of what happened to their mother, and the enemy that's been stalking them from the shadows for generations. In a twisting torrent of terror and blood, the sisters must uncover the power within them to heal their fractured relationship, reverse their mysteriously declining health, and claim the lineage they wanted to escape but now must embrace if they are to survive at Bone Hill.

Ava Morgyn grew up falling in love with all the wrong characters in all the wrong stories, then studied English Writing & Rhetoric at St. Edward’s University. She is a lover of witchcraft, tarot, and powerful women with bad reputations, and she currently resides in Houston with her family, surrounded by antiques and dog hair. When not at her laptop spinning darkly hypnotic tales, she writes for her blog on child loss (forloveofevelyn.com), hunts for vintage treasures, and reads the darkest books she can find.

She is the author of YA novels Resurrection Girls and The Salt in Our Blood, and paranormal women's fiction, The Witches of Bone Hill, releasing September 26, 2023 from St. Martin's Griffin.

https://www.avamorgyn.com/

My Thoughts

Newly released (September 26th, 2023) St. Martins Griffen. Witches of Bone Hill by Ava Morgyn is in the category of fantasy, witches, paranormal, etc. Cordelia Bone and her sister Eustace, whom she has not seen much of in the past 5 years, get notified that they were left an inheritance by a great-aunt.

Cordelia lives in Dallas, her life is falling down around her, her marriage is over, he left and left her in debt with unsavory characters. Eustace grows cannabis and lives a pretty carefree life in Boulder, calls Cordelia to let her know that the great aunt has died and left them an inheritance. This turns out to be a godsend to Cordelia, she can sell her house and with whatever money she gets can go to pay off her louse of husband's debts.

Things are a little bit more difficult than they had planned. The house( mansion) is in a dynasty trust which requires both women to live in the house. Never leaving the property, because if they do, weird things happen. They really don't understand the rules, if you will, as they had never met this great aunt. The trust is run by an elderly attorney, he is very vague when telling the two women what is expected of them. Not being able to leave the property is a bit weird and scary in turn.

There is a tattooed groundskeeper that Cordelia is getting increasingly attracted to. He appears to have his own secrets and the reason he does not leave the property is that his own mother died in mysterious circumstances and he needs to find out what happened. So with Cordelia and Eustace's assistance, they all try to get to the bottom of the secrets of the house and the Bone family, purported to be witches.

On the property is the crypt with lots of dead relatives of the women. They are both wanting to find out what happened to their mother, who would not tell them much about her family as she left the family years ago. It is kind of sad that when they could never understand their mother and wish she was still alive, they come to understand why she left the family and what became of her.

This is definitely a story about witches, lots of folklore, and of course, creepy happenings that keep occurring to Cordelia and Eustace. This is also a time when the sisters are able to finally bond again and get past their early lives. Of course with a sexy groundskeeper, there is bound to be romance, and there is lots of that!

I was drawn to the book by its gorgeous cover and the fact that it was witchy! I did not get bogged down at all in the story, loved every minute of it, especially the creepy parts. The author did a great job weaving the past and present in the lives of the previous owners of the mansion and their secrets!

I really liked the book and read it in two sittings. I give the book 5 stars!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

The bell rings, and I leave him in my office to answer the door. I hear his footsteps once I have the door open.
“Ms. Nia Nash?” a young woman asks. When I nod, she says. “You’ve been served.” She slaps a large manila envelope in my hand and leaves before I can utter a word.
I can feel my world cracking, and I know who’s responsible. I slam the door shut and practically collide with him when I turn around. He crosses his arms and stares down at the envelope. I rip it open, and it confirms every thought I’ve had since that woman handed it to me and fucked my life up.
I flip the page and scan it before letting out a guttural sound. I toss the lawsuit in his face and run to the kitchen. I grab the big kitchen knife and take menacing steps toward him.
