Journey back to the Roaring Twenties in small-town America and join Doro Banyon, college librarian and armchair detective, as she confronts another mystery. 

Spring is in the air, and Doro is looking forward to her hometown’s May Days festival. When her friend Aggie wins the baking contest, their celebration is short-lived because the two local lawmen—judges for the competition—fall ill after consuming extra portions of Aggie’s jam roll. Rumors run rampant, especially when the town doctor pinpoints the cause as poisoning. 

With the constabulary down, but not out, the two friends must unravel the mystery. As they study possibilities, Doro and Aggie find plenty of motives and suspects. Is someone trying to make Aggie look bad or get even with her? Do area bootleggers want the police out of their way while illegal liquor is transported through the area? Or is another motive involved? The young women vow to glean answers and find the culprit.

Doro scurried down the winding stairs and reached the cellar in short order. Her nose wrinkled at the musty odor, but she pushed on. As she entered the main tunnel, Doro heard rapid footsteps echoing ahead of her.

While there was a dirt floor in most places, concrete had been poured in other locations. Not wanting to be heard, she quickly shed her shoes and hurried on. Her breath came in short rasps as her feel flew across the uneven ground.

When the passage split into two branches, Doro hesitated. One led to the male faculty residence hall, while the other went to the library. [The culprit] was not apt to escape through the apartment building, so Doro turned the opposite way. 

Although the library was still open, no one would be in the storeroom, which was where anyone using her current route would emerge. As she scampered along, Doro considered how and where to confront the person. Definitely not on the rickety staircase leading to the library, so keeping her distance to avoid a dangerous confrontation was crucial. But not too much distance, because the storage area had a back door. She could not let the guilty party escape.

As she reached the steps, Doro heard the door above her head click shut. After a deep breath, she ran up the flight and waited. With her pulse pounding in her ears, hearing was not easy. Finally, the sound of footsteps again reached her. After a long inhalation, she eased the door open and a dark figure, now devoid of the hooded mask, came into view…

D.S. Lang has been a teacher, mentor, tutor, and golf shop manager, but being an author is her current, and most favorite, role. As a little girl, she fell in love with stories and frequently made them up to entertain herself. She still is, but now she puts them in writing!

In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming, and walking with Izzy, who is the inspiration for the dog in her Doro Banyon series. D.S. grew up with dogs and has hardly ever met one she didn’t like! 

Her books are set in small-town America during the Roaring Twenties and feature women amateur sleuths who solve crimes with a team of colorful characters, including a lawman or two. The times and places provide a peek into life a century ago when times were simpler in some ways, but when America society was changing. Her spunky heroines embrace being modern women.

So, my parents and I squeeze into the cable car like putty being forced into a crack in the drywall. The locking mechanism on the arm of the car engages with the cable that ascends into the black void above us, and we are off.

As the gondola car rises, I can instantly see why people get so freaked out about riding these types of things. The sheer rock wall in front of us seems to be forever about to smash against the plexiglass windows of our transportation coffin. That alone is frightening. But my dad is about to add another level of drama to what is already a tense experience.

About halfway through the journey, my dad stands up in the car and begins to gently sway it from side to side by shifting his body weight. My mum starts to get understandably agitated.

“Stop that. Stop that, John,” she pleads, trying to keep her voice light.

Dad chuckles, not out of spite, but with the rapid, intoxicating influx of endorphins, or adrenaline, or whatever weird hormone in his body that is sending a thrilling, addictive rush to his brain. Rather than halting, he continues to make the gondola sway.

“Oh, for god’s sake John, stop,” cries mum. The agitation in her voice now clearly evident.

Dad laughs. And keeps the gondola rocking from side to side.

I am wondering what kilogram per square inch of centrifugal force created by the arcing motion of the gondola is needed to snap the cable and send us dropping like a stone back to the departure station. Was the possibility of someone, weighing exactly 93.5 kilograms, standing up and rocking the gondola from side to side factored into the construction of the cable car? Dad is an engineer, and he taught me to have an interest in important engineering matters such as this.

We continue to sway.

Now mum is really freaking out.

And that creates a vicious cycle. The more she screams, the more dad continues to sway the car we are in. The more the car sways, the more he laughs. The more he laughs, the more she screams.

The laughter coming from dad must be booming across the hillsides like a Swiss alpenhorn. Mum’s cries of fear must sound like an air-raid siren.

And we keep on swaying.

The cliff face we are precariously shooting past in our escalation seems closer to smashing our Easter Egg to pieces.

Mum’s screams increase until they are as loud as those of my older sister after a stick she inadvertently picked up at the beach ended up having a jellyfish tentacle on it. The tentacle fell and draped across her shoulder like a thin, toxic scarf. She immediately fell to her knees, wailing. I wonder if their identical screams are a coincidence or genetic.

Dad continues to rock our gondola car into a second minute. Mum now screams as loud as my older sister did when dad poured the methylated spirits on the rash left by the jellyfish stinger. Yep, it is genetic.

Now here is the thing. I am witless. I do not know what to do. Like my mum, I am beyond terrified. But dad’s laughter is so infectious that it causes me to laugh as well. I am laughing at my dad laughing because mum’s screams are so blood curdling that it makes this petrifying event even more traumatizing, which only serves to make me laugh. I think that sums it up clearly.

Simon Yeats has lived nine lives, and by all estimations, is fast running out of the number he has left. His life of globetrotting the globe was not the one he expected to lead. He grew up a quiet, shy boy teased by other kids on the playgrounds for his red hair. But he developed a keen wit and sense of humor to always see the funnier side of life.

With an overwhelming love of travel, a propensity to find trouble where there was none, and being a passionate advocate of mental health, Simon’s stories will leave a reader either rolling on the floor in tears of laughter, or breathing deeply that the adventures he has led were survived.

“Didn’t we go over this?” 

I push off until I’m standing to my full height and hold up one finger. “Dinner sounds like a date.” 

I add a second finger. “Dates lead to relationships. ”

It’s dinner. It’s not like I’m asking for your hand in marriage. Unless that will help my chances. I’ll get on one knee right now.” 

“Guess what I think about that?”

“What?” With my other two fingers still in the air, I add a third. Then I curl my pointer and ring finger to my palm leaving only my middle finger. A grin curls around his full lips. “That was good. But I don’t speak finger, so you have to give me a good reason why?”

“Because you’re… Trey.”

“That’s not a good reason.”

“You’re not my type.”

“Sexy. Confident. Well-endowed aren’t your type?” I snort a laugh. “More like cocky and full of himself aren’t my type. Plus, you wear a suit.”

“What’s wrong with the suit?” He runs his hands down the lapels of his jacket. “Nothing per se, but I just don’t do suits. They’re too…suity. It only adds to the cocky and arrogant thing you got going on.” I wave my hand over his body. “Well, I can fix that.” Trey stands and removes his suit jacket and drapes it over the backrest of his stool. His fingers dig into the knot of his tie, loosening it. Next, he pops the button at his collar. “What are you doing?” I ask. “Taking off the suit.” “You’re going to strip? Right here, in a full bar?”

“Yup.” He undoes a couple more buttons. I want to tear my gaze away, but I can’t. Instead, I spit out whatever words I can muster. “Keep your clothes on. No one wants to see you naked.” Nora smacks my arm, and I jerk my head to face her. From the corner of her mouth she says, “Speak for yourself. I kinda want to see what he’s packing underneath.” I narrow my gaze at her. She shrugs and slinks away but keeps a close eye on Trey in case he does remove the rest of his clothes. She wouldn’t want to miss that. Hell, right now I don’t want to miss it either. Trey clears his throat and I twist around to meet his gaze.

 “So, what’s it going to be? Am I getting naked right here or are we going on a date?
