Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

What Janie Wants by Rhenna Morgan Cover Reveal!

What Janie Wants
by: Rhenna Morgan
Publication Date: June 22, 2015
Cover Designer: Mayhem Cover Creations
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

Clothing optional…

Janie McAlister should have known better than to trust her quirky sister’s taste in resorts. Instead of thatched-roof huts and designer pools overlooking the ocean, she’s landed at the one seventies throwback in the Riviera Maya with an open door nudity policy. No way is she going à la natural in public. And she’s sure not entertaining the advances of the bold young man with the delicious body daring her to do exactly that…and so much more.

Well, hello, Ms. McAlister…

Zade Painel’s a man on a mission—grab some much needed R&R at Gypsy Cove, and figure out how to reclaim his boudoir photography business. He never thought the answer would come in the form of a curvy, forty-year-old redhead and an accidental knee to the ‘nads, but Janie proves to be a force of nature with a penchant for fixing things. She’s also sexy as hell. One way or another, he’s going to help her see just that. And if he plays his cards right, it'll be a heavenly hands-on approach that lasts way past seven days in paradise.

Excerpt

Told in Janie’s Point of View:
Janie froze. Every muscle locked up and her breath hitched. The only thing actively working was her heart, which after its initial stumble, had taken off at a gallop.
“…make damned sure the only thing you can do is feel.”
So tempting. So terribly tempting.
The shadows around him accented the sharp angles of his jaw and nose, and his voice dropped to a grumble. “Talk to me, Janie.”
And tell him what? That she wanted what he wanted as bad as he did, but she was terrified to give the green light? That she wasn’t sure she could take the disappointment in his eyes if things got serious and he saw what a quality sundress could hide? “What do you want to know?”
“Tell me what you want.”
Touch. Passion. Contact. Skin. It all rushed in at once, clogging her throat and seizing her thoughts.
“One word.” His hand tightened on his lap, not so subtly gripping what looked to be a powerful erection. “One thing at a time.”
She swallowed and tried to catch her breath. The request leapt to her tongue, ready for launch. Damn it to hell, she was a living, breathing human, not some freakish deviant. Why couldn’t she say what she wanted? Own it. It was one night. One chance she may never get again. “A kiss.”
He stared at her. Quiet.
Her lungs burned, the air so thick she could barely breathe.
He stood and padded to her side of the bed.
With every step, her heartbeat surged a notch. Her thighs pressed so tight together it was a wonder the bed didn’t shake.
He unhooked his watch. One of those chunky ones her son had begged her for two Christmas’ ago.  Somehow the silver looked right on Zade. Manly. Effortless and stylish without being overblown.
It clunked against the nightstand as he sat it aside.
He’d rolled his sleeves up, tanned skin and prominent veins peeking from beneath the crisp blue fabric. The top two buttons of his shirt were open, leaving his neck on display. And his eyes, bright blue and bold as the hottest flame, framed by his loose blond bangs.
He scanned her body stretched out on the bed, put a knee to the mattress, and straddled her thighs. Rooting his hands on either side of her head, he held his body over hers, yet not touching. “A kiss.” He dipped closer. Slow, inhaling deep. “Want to point out, you didn’t put any restrictions on your request.”

He traced the line of her lips with his own, close enough to tickle and tease, but not nearly enough to give her what she craved. “You didn’t say how…” His warm breath fluttered against her face. “…or where.” He licked her lower lip and lifted his gaze to hers. “I’ll take that to mean I get to taste all of you.”

Meet the Author

Rhenna Morgan writes for the same reason she reads—to escape reality.   Yes, her life rocks—two beautiful little girls, a great husband, a steady job, and the kind of friends that would take you out back if you hurt her. But, like most women, she’s got obligations stacked tight from dusk to dawn. So, when the world gets her down, she slips into something…less realistic.   Romance is a must. So is a steamy romp (or four). Nothing thrills her more than the fantasy of new, exciting worlds, strong, intuitive men, and the sigh of, “Oh if only that could happen to me.” So, if you’re picking up one of her books, expect portals into alternate realms and men who’ll fight to keep the women they want. Romantic escape for the women who need it.

The Gun by Daithi Kavanagh Review!

Book Description

Garda Detective Tadhg Sullivan leads a special unit that investigates politically
motivated crime. A man known only as The Deerstalker is a cancer who has infected
the Irish political system.
Sullivan teams up with journalist Helen Carty, and together they try tracking down
the mysterious killer. Carty adds to Sullivan’s problems, when he finds himself falling
in love with her. And further complicating things, he starts losing trust in his partner,
Detective Pat Carter, who appears to be on the side of the Garda Commissioner,
who Sullivan is rapidly falling out with.
Sullivan’s case is further thrown into confusion when a copycat killer, Tommy Walsh,
is shot dead by the CIA. When the CIA discovers that they've killed the wrong
person, the two agents involved--Simon, who has become disillusioned by his time
stationed in the Middle East, and Joey, a psychopath who confuses zealotry with
patriotism--are also in pursuit of The Deerstalker.
Sullivan finds himself in a race against time, if he is to arrest The Deerstalker before
the CIA take him out, and use his death as a pawn in a political game of chess.
Who will win out in the end?

Excerpt from The Gun

He stared at the gun lying on the bed. It had been in his possession for nearly
half his life and he’d never known what to do with it. The funny thing was, he’d
always hated guns and yet, here he was.
He heard his wife moving around downstairs, and knew soon she would call him
for a cup of tea. He had to get the gun back into its hiding place.
He thought back to the first time he’d seen it. A late night knock at the door and a
man from down the street had handed it to him with ammunition, both wrapped in
fertiliser bags.
“What the hell is this?” he’d blurted out.
“It’s a gun,” the man had said with no expression.
“What are you giving it to me for?” he’d whispered, not wanting his family to
hear.
“Because I trust you,” he’d replied.
“What the hell do you mean, you trust me? You hardly know me! And all I know
about you is you’re mixed up in the IRA. I have a family and I don’t give a damn
about the North. Now please get away from my door and take that with you.”
The man had stared at him, but all calm had disappeared from his features.
Then he spoke through gritted teeth.
“Now listen to me. The guards are going to be here shortly. Something serious
happened tonight, and now you’re mixed up in it, whether you like it or not. If you
don’t take the gun from me now, when the guards arrive and see us together, I’ll
implicate you. Even if they don’t believe me, it will mean you’ll have to stand up in
Court and give evidence against me. Do you want that for your family? It would be
much easier for you to stick the gun in the boot of your car, drive off somewhere, and
hide it. But you’d better make your mind up fast, before they arrive and arrest us
both.”
He often wondered why he’d taken it. Was it because he’d had sympathy for the
man? He didn’t think so. Maybe it was the fear of being implicated, or like the man
had said, being branded an informer. He wasn’t sure, but whatever the reason, it
seemed like providence.
He heard his wife again. He heard her wheelchair go over the door saddle in the
kitchen. He knew she was sitting there in the hallway looking up the stairs. He was
safe upstairs, yet he always felt panic when he knew she was listening.
“Is that you love?” he called down.
“Yes, what are you doing up there?”
“I’m just checking my fishing gear.”
He hated lying to her, but what could he say? That he was checking out his
sniper rifle?
“Well I’m putting on a cup of tea, so finish up and come down and share some
with me.”
“Right you are. Just give me a minute. Cut up some of that Swiss Roll I bought
yesterday.”
He pulled back the carpet, lifted the floorboards he’d loosened, and put the gun
back in its hiding place, feeling a jolt of excitement. He’d already set his little plan in
motion. They’d find out the hard way, no matter who you are, you can’t escape
justice.

Author Bio

Daithi Kavanagh lives in Trinity, County Wexford with his wife and two teenage
children.
He has worked for several years as a musician.
In the last couple of years, after taking up adult education, he began writing.
His debut book is ‘The Gun’ and has now started the second book in the series.
* * *

My Thoughts

The Gun is a story of many characters, but the main one is the shooter. He has a disabled wife whom he loves dearly and children that have moved away from home. Sounds like most families, right? Well not necessarily, the shooter is a disgruntled man who is disgusted with the local and country politics of Ireland. He blames the government for his children migrating to Ireland because there is no work. It is after the Celtic Tiger and times are tough for people in Ireland. He feels that the politicians are lining their own pockets while the people in the country are struggling. He decides to do something about it and starts shooting and killing these same politicians.

Garda Detective Tadhg (pronounced (Tige) Sullivan is one of those hard boiled detectives who has lived hard. He gets together with a journalist and together they try to figure out who the shooter is , the police call him the Deerhunter. It is not the ideal match as he really should not be sharing info with a journalist, but he just can not help himself, because he is falling in love with her. These are not the only three characters in the story, there is Tadhg's partner, their commanding officer, a man by the name of Tommy, who the CIA think is the shooter, and of course the two CIA operatives.

I did enjoy this story, a really good plot that could have come from The Irish Times, the pace was good, the characters well written. The only issue I had was the formatting for the Kindle. The chapters kind of ran into each other and there were times that it took a bit to figure out which character was narrating the story. I didn't find this a big problem though as reading files on a Kindle can be that way. I would recommend this book to the reader who enjoys a good suspenseful story, plus it is set in Ireland, in my book that is a plus!

I received a copy of the book from the author for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Daughter of the Regiment by Stephanie Grace Whitson Spotlight!

The Book

Irish immigrant Maggie Malone wants no part of the war. She'd rather let "the Americans" settle their differences-until her brothers join Missouri's Union Irish Brigade, and one of their names appears on a list of injured soldiers. Desperate for news, Maggie heads for Boonville, where the Federal army is camped. There she captures the attention of Sergeant John Coulter. When circumstances force Maggie to remain with the brigade, she discovers how capable she is of helping the men she comes to think of as "her boys." And while she doesn't see herself as someone a man would court, John Coulter is determined to convince her otherwise.

As the mistress of her brother's Missouri plantation, Elizabeth Blair has learned to play her part as the perfect hostess-and not to question her brother Walker's business affairs. When Walker helps organize the Wildwood Guard for the Confederacy, and offers his plantation as the Center of Operations, Libbie must gracefully manage a house with officers in residence and soldiers camped on the lawn. As the war draws ever closer to her doorstep, she must also find a way to protect the people who depend on her.

Despite being neighbors, Maggie and Libbie have led such different lives that they barely know one another-until war brings them together, and each woman discovers that both friendship and love can come from the unlikeliest of places.

The Author

Stephanie Grace Whitson has made a career out of playing with imaginary friends, and it all started in an abandoned pioneer cemetery. This one's graves are scattered on a tiny corner of land near where the Whitson family lived in the 1990s. That cemetery provided not only a hands-on history lesson for Stephanie's four home schooled children but also a topic of personal study as she began to read about and be encouraged by the pioneer women who settled the American West. Since writing had always been a favorite hobby, it was only natural for her to begin jotting down scenes in the life of a nameless woman crossing Nebraska on the Oregon Trail. Eventually that story took on a life of its own and Stephanie sent off a query letter--expecting instant rejection.

God had a different plan. He blessed Stephanie's beginnings, putting two of her three first books on the ECPA best-seller list and making two of her first nine books finalists for the Christy Award. More recently (in 2012) she received Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award for Best Inspirational Romance. In addition to writing (she has authored more than two dozen books), Stephanie loves antique quilts and pioneer women's history and riding her Honda Magna motorcycle named Kitty. A lifelong student, she earned her Master of Arts degree in history in 2012.

"The flip side of writing," Stephanie says, "is being asked to teach writing and/or speak at various church and community events." She has developed a menu of lectures and workshops that "provide opportunities for me to travel and get to know not only other writers and history lovers, but also students and quilters. I love sequestering myself in a library to do research, but the speaking part of my career has provided some unique and wonderful memories."

And then there's Kitty, the Honda Magna. "In some ways I'm 60," she says, "in others I'm probably about 26. It all depends on the day." On days when her virtual age leans toward the younger side of that equation, she's been known to wake up in the morning and decide to ride Kitty to Canada. And then she comes home and descends to "the catacombs" (the basement office in her Victorian-era house) and heads back into the past to play with more imaginary friends.

"If you like Bernard Conwell's Grail Quest series, you'll love The French Executioner and The Curse of Anne Boleyn. To my mind Cornwell is good, but Humphreys is better."—Sally Zigmund, Historical Novels Review (UK)

From the masterful C.C. Humphreys, comes the captivating sequel to The French Executioner.

Nearly twenty years have passed since Anne Boleyn died at the hands of her slayer and savior, Jean Rombaud. All he wants is to forget his sword-wielding days and live happily with his family. Yet her distinctive six-fingered hand, stolen at her death—and all the dark power it represents—still compels evil men to seek it out.

When Jean's son, Gianni, joins the Inquisition in Rome and betrays all his father worked for, Jean discovers that time alone cannot take him—or his son—far from his past. But he never expected his whole family, especially his beloved daughter Anne, to become caught up once more in the tragic queen's terrible legacy.

From the savagery of way in Italy to the streets of London and Paris and the wilds of North America, The Curse of Anne Boleyn sweeps readers into a thrilling story that puts love, loyalty, and family to the ultimate test.

"With The French Executioner, Humphreys established himself as a quality purveyor of historical detail and vigorous action...This unusual story line is dispatched with consummate skill."
—Good Books Guide (UK)

An Excerpt from THE CURSE OF ANNE BOLEYN by C.C. Humphreys

The freezing mist seemed to pool thicker about the chapel doors, yet no one seemed anxious to seek shelter from it. Tucknell fiddled with the keys in his hand, the three laborers leaned on shovels and picks, avoiding each other’s eyes. Even Thomas felt a reluctance to proceed. Outside the iron-studded doors, the frigid air was at least connected to the world of the living, their footprints in the frost a trail back to light and warmth. Ahead, within the darkness, lay a deeper cold – the realm of the dead. And they were there to violate that realm.

After a few moments watching plumes of breath stripe the night, Thomas shifted, made to speak, to command. Before the breath could become a voice in him, the warder pulled him slightly to one side, whispered, “Sir. Let me ask of you once more. Beg of you. Do not do this. It is a sin.”

“I have my orders, Tucknell. And you have yours. You saw the signature on the papers. This command comes from the Queen herself.”

It was not strictly true, but the officer was not to know that. He drew back, seeking Thomas’s eyes.

“I know our gracious sovereign Mary has little reason to love… she who lies here. But to thus despoil her tomb?” His voice softened. “You are an Englishman, sir, and a gentleman I can tell. Let us spare an English lady further humiliation.” Off Thomas’s silent stare he cried, “For Jesu’s sake, man, hasn’t she suffered enough?”

Thomas leaned in, so his voice, softened now, beguiling, would not carry to the waiting, shifting men.

“I do not like this either, man. But we have had reports that this woman may have taken something with her to the grace. Something that may… be of use to Her Majesty.”

Tucknell’s face twisted, as if containing a violent struggle. “She took nothing with her save a prayer book and the clothes she wore. I know, sir, because I was there.” The struggle overpowered him. “I know because I helped to kill her and to bury her afterward. May God have mercy on my soul!”

“Amen.”

Thomas watched a tear that had nothing to do with the harsh wind run from this tough soldier’s eye, and wondered at the power this woman, dead nearly twenty years, still had over the living. A power to be turned into a weapon for the Catholic cause, so his superiors in the Society of Jesus believed. But only if he, Thomas Lawley, did his duty now.

“Come, Master Tucknell. You have merely to show me the way. If there is sin after that, it is I, and I alone, that will commit it.” The soldier before him hardened, the tears withdrawn. Without another word he turned to the door and fitted into its lock the largest of the keys he carried. It grated there, with a cry like that of the raven defending its cache of food. The doors, in contrast, swung open, as silent as on any tomb.

The Eternal Dream by Daniel K.Gilbert Spotlight!

Book Description

The Eternal Dream is story of a love that endured through the labyrinth of history. Throughout the fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazi Germany, Walter Baum, a slight young man with a stout heart and lofty ideals, never loses sight of what he values most: the love of his wife and children. As a Jewish sociologist in post–World War I Germany, Walter watches with dread as friends and family either become members of the Brownshirts or fall victim to them. His marriage to Caroline, a like-minded Protestant, causes family estrangements and forces Walter, Caroline, and their two children to try to flee from the catastrophic events that engulf Europe during the Second World War. When prospects for survival become bleak, Caroline's prophetic dream provides a ray of hope for the family. Kirkus Reviews calls The Eternal Dream: "A captivating story of fortitude, family bonds and hope against all odds."

Excerpt
During the nightmare years, Walter Baum would often think back to the day he first saw his future love, who he mistook for a swan…

Yes,” she heard herself say. “I will marry you.” It was as if a force outside of herself had taken over.
They embraced, and Walter stood on his toes to kiss her. Their height difference made it a little awkward, so they sat on the park bench and kissed again. She felt somewhat embarrassed at such a public display of affection. They smiled at each other, and returned to kissing. His lips felt so soft. She embraced him, feeling his heart beating. They then looked around and giggled at each other.
Caroline reflected for a moment.
“Walter?”
“Yes, Caroline... darling?” He held and kissed her hand.
“What are we going to tell our parents?”
They froze, and she felt the shiver return as she thought about what awaited them.
