Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Because anywhere you go, the silky travel pouch will protect the mask and ear plugs. In addition to our luxurious sleep mask, you will also receive an extensive e-book containing the sleep secrets you need more than you think.

Do you ever have restless nights where you just toss and turn because the room you are in is too bright or noisy? Yea, I do too especially when we are away from home staying in a hotel or unfamiliar room. We are all creatures of habit and have our little foibles.

I find that I am a very fussy sleeper and don't often get a full nights rest due to medical issues so whatever sleep I can get is great. I know I have a very hard time when we are traveling as you know how those hotel rooms are, wonderful double lined curtains that would help if they were flush to the window, and then just because there always is this humongous spotlight right outside the window that would light up the Statue of Liberty. Well yes I exaggerate but that is how it feels when you are desperately trying to get to sleep and have a way too early flight or car ride.

I had never tried a sleep mask and now I wonder why I never did. I received a Sleep Sublime Eye Mask by Smarter Rest at no cost through a promotion from Tomoson and tried it for a few nights. I found that the sleep mask is comfortable and easy to wear, after a few nights you really can't tell you are wearing one. It is soft and lightweight with a nice velcro adjustable strap that you can adjust. The mask also comes with a pair of earplugs and a cute little carrying case. The mask fits perfectly and it really does block out the light. The only thing is that if you are not accustomed to wearing a sleep mask, you will find it disconcerting the first few times you open your eyes with the mask on. You may be disoriented as to where you are because it is so dark, but that is the beauty of the mask. Included is an offer for an ebook full of sleep secrets!

So do you want to get a restful sleep, no matter how many hours, and wake up refreshed without those nasty bags under your eyes? Well go get one of these masks. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Washing is easy too, just hand wash and air dry. I really like the mask and it will definitely be using the mask regularly and taking it along on trips. I have not tried this yet but I bet it would be perfect for that plane ride that you want to sleep on!

The Judges Story by Joyce T.Strand Spotlight with Giveaway of a Kindle Fire HD 7 or Kindle Paperwhite!!

Today it is my pleasure to welcome Joyce T. Strand, author of The Judges Story to Celticlady's Reviews!

About The Judge’s Story

A Superior Court Judge with a passion for social justice as well as the law strives to discover the truth behind the mystery of a robbery-murder in a small California town in 1939.

When the Judge hears testimony against a 14-year-old teenager, he realizes that the boy participated in a robbery-murder. However, the accused did not actually pull the trigger. But unless the boy identifies his partner, the Judge must sentence him as a murderer, which would result in prolonged jail time. The Judge’s investigator, along with the precocious 16-year-old girl who identified the boy as one of the thieves, explore different approaches to uncover the murderer. In the backdrop of escalating war in Europe, the financial scarcities of the Great Depression, and the Judge’s caseload, their attempts to find justice for the accused boy and unmask the killer lure the Judge and his friends into sordid criminal activities.

About Joyce Strand:

Mystery author Joyce T. Strand, much like her fictional character, Jillian Hillcrest, served as head of corporate communications at several biotech and high-tech companies in Silicon Valley for more than 25 years. Unlike Jillian, however, she did not encounter murder. Rather, she focused on publicizing her companies and their products. She is the author of the Jillian Hillcrest mysteries ON MESSAGE, OPEN MEETINGS, and FAIR DISCLOSURE and the Brynn Bancroft mystery HILLTOP SUNSET. Strand received her Ph.D. from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. and her B.A. from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA. She currently lives in Southern California with her two cats, a collection of cow statuary and art, and her muse, the roadrunner.

My Thoughts
"Judge Akers watched the teenage girl enter his courtroom. She had agreed to testify against a fourteen year old schoolmate for theft and murder"

Using actual cases as inspiration, author of The Judges Story, Joyce T.Strand, writes characters around real people. The judge in this story, Judge Akers, is one of those type of judges that we need now, honest, fair,  and looking out for children. The story takes place in the 1930's California. Judge Akers had been a practicing lawyer before becoming a judge. He is widowed and is very involved in a boys club, loves cars and listening to music.

Clara, a teenaged schoolgirl with a passion for writing, testifies in a trial of a 14 year old boy accused of murder in the robbery of a store where the store owner, Mr.Brant was killed, even though he never pulled the trigger but is still culpable in his involvement. Mr.Brant left behind a wife and children who will now be struggling just to survive. Clara becomes Oscars advocate as she learns more about him and his circumstances.

Oscar Briarly is the boy on trial. Oscar's mother is a drunk, his older brother Tommy is in prison, the father is really a piece of work and the younger brother Frankie has diminished mental capabilities. Oscar has a thirst for knowledge that is remarkable coming from the background he does.

Judge Akers enlists the aid of Clara to try to talk to Oscar in jail to find out who the actual shooter was in the death of Mr.Brant. Once Clara finds out that Oscar would love to read, she starts teaching him while getting to know him and to see if he will tell her who did the shooting. Oscar "is no snitch" so the information that the police and judge want is not going to happen unless Clara can use her persuasive skills to get the information needed.

At the same time there is a string of robberies going on being done by young school boys. These boys are working for someone and it is up to the police to find out who is the ringleader. Judge Akers, Clara and an investigator, Jim, work together to get the culprits. So in an unusual precedence, Judge Akers delays the sentencing of Oscar as long as he can while the investigation goes on.

I was impressed with this story and the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck came to mind probably because of the era, people not able to find work or unable to take care of their families so the young boys are forced to get work where they can and it is usually illegal activities. I found the characters to be engaging, especially Clara and even Oscar. Clara, a young lady who has a passion and skill for writing and Oscar and his thirst for knowledge. In my minds eye, in a continuation of the story, I can see these two becoming great friends, of course after whatever punishment that Oscar may receive due to his part in the robbery and murder.

I enjoyed the author's style of writing, short chapters, enough information about the story and without being boring or having long drawn out characterizations. This is the first book I have read by Joyce Strand events to weave a story that should appeal to everyone.

I received a copy of the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for said review.

Orphans, Assassins & the Existential Eggplant by J.T.Gillett Spotlight!

Orphans, Assassins, and the Existential EggplantPublication Date: February 19, 2015 Publisher: Homunculus Press Formats: Kindle eBook, Paperback ISBN-13: 978-0692391662 Pages: 279 Genre: Historical Fiction

  Add to GR Button

Orphans, Assassins and the Existential Eggplant explores the quirky side of historical fiction. The novel takes you on wild ride through the early 13th century with a female alchemist, orphan teenager and a 600-year-old, shrunken eggplant that can speak to whomever wears it. In search of the fabled Lost Stone of Eden, they cross Europe and the Mediterranean with the Children?s Crusade, hijack a caravan in the Sahara desert, live with hashish-fueled Assassins in the mountains of Persia and rediscover paradise on the island of Bahrain.

Excerpt

Aaron and the girls slept for a few hours during the hottest part of the day, then rode through the evening and the entire night, taking only a few breaks to rest the camels. They didn?t catch up to any slow-moving caravans, come upon an oasis or see fires in the night. Everything around them seemed the same, day after day. Same mirrored sky. Same scorching sun. Same sound of camel farting and plodding. Same sad, ivory scent of emptiness. ?Are we dead?? asked Donatelle as they shared the last of the water. They were sitting atop a tall dune and could see nothing but more dunes in every direction. ?Do you feel dead?? Aaron had to ask, knowing that in the middle of this terminal landscape, it was a good question. ?I can?t tell because I don?t know what it?s like to be dead, but it might be like this. Just nothing,? Donatelle shrugged. ?Death is much different?and much luckier,? guessed the eggplant. Aaron hoped the eggplant was right, but he chose a different answer for Donatelle. ?Whenever I?m not sure, I listen for my heartbeat. The pounding inside me says I?m alive in this world and even though we?re in a dead place, we?ll survive. We?ll find something soon, or something will find us.? Something took the form of a humming dark cloud on the horizon. They watched as it grew darker, stretched across the dunes and started to roar like steady, rolling thunder.

Praise for Orphans, Assassins and the Existential Eggplant

"Good stories rise and fall like empires in the endless pursuit of happiness, like armies of lovers marching to paradise - good stories change the world." So begins Part One of Orphans, Assassins and the Existential Eggplant. This book is such a good read. I read it on the plane to Hawaii, and it soared with me through the sky. My wife kept asking what was so funny as I giggled and laughed in my seat. This story changed me, in that flying is such a drag these days, and this book kept coming up with surprises, weaving together stories of gods, goddesses, orphans and assassins, the pursuit of the unattainable, and existential conundrums. I have had the opportunity to read some of Mr Gillett's poetry (especially "This is My Last Poem" - I hope this is not his last novel), and in this novel, he brings his poetic ability to sublimely transport the reader to new views of the mundane, new opportunities for transformation, and new ways of understanding my own self. What more could I ask for in a book. Steal this book if you need to, but get it and read it with joy." - Paul Rerucha, Amazon Reviewer "I don't read a ton of books for pleasure but I did read this one on the recommendation of a friend. It kept me captivated and I ended up finishing it in 2.5 days. This is the kind of book that makes me want to read more often." - B. H., Amazon Reviewer

VanDay Coffee Mugs 18/8 Stainless Steel Double Wall Tea Cup Review

Product Description
Size: 14 oz

This 14 OZ stainless steel is hygienic and durable, suitable for frequent use. Ideal for adult and children. This double wall coffee cup prevents condensation on the outside and the stainless steel construction makes it much tougher than fragile double wall glass mugs.  This mug will work very well with a stainless steel tea infuser for brewing your favorite tea! Made with food grade 18/8 stainless steel and excellent craftsmanship. Stainless steel products do not chip nor crack like porcelain and glass. It is food safe, no lead, no BPA and no toxins. Also, easy to clean. Everybody loves Stainless Steel! Please choose this high quality tumbler with our VanDay brand logo!

My Thoughts
I am clumsy, I have some medical issues that cause this and when I saw this mug I thought it would be perfect. I rarely buy any drinking vessels that are breakable because I would not have it long. The VanDay Stainless Steel Coffee Mug is high quality, food grade, lightweight with a double wall design. You would think that a mug that was stainless steel would be hot on the outside, I found that this was not the case due to the double wall design, the handle is easy to hold and I love to drink coffee on the deck and this mug is perfect for that. It keeps my coffee hot longer than the standard ceramic mug and if I were to drop it, I think it would bounce, might dent a little but I have not tried that out. The mug is easy to clean, just a bit of soapy water and a cloth to shine it up. The perfect mug to take to the office, on a picnic or use at home. I really like it! The only thing I noticed and it is not a problem for me, is that this mug was 14oz and not an espresso mug that was listed for review I actually received VanDay Coffee Mugs 18/8 Stainless Steel Double Wall Tea Cup so my review will be going on this product. This mug also fits perfectly on the largest mug size for my Keurig and is eco friendly.

I received VanDay Coffee Mugs 18/8 Stainless Steel Double Wall Tea Cups Beer Stein for review free to review. This is a sponsored post.

Roman Mask by Thomas M.D.Brooke Spotlight!

Large copy of Cover

Publication Date: June 29, 2015 CreateSpace Formats: Kindle & Paperback Pages: 388 Genre: Historical Fiction/Adventure/Action

What is it we normally expect of the leading character in our books? Self-sacrifice? Bravery? Strength of character? Possibly with a hint of self-deprecation? Well, Cassius doesn?t have any of those. Cynicism ? yes. Cowardice ? possibly. Prepared to live a lie in order to further his own ends ? absolutely!

It is Rome AD 9 and Augustus Caesar rules Imperial Rome at the height of its power, as the Roman Empire stretches across the known world. Cassius, son of one of her most powerful families, is the personification of Rome?s imperial strength: wealthy, popular, a war hero with a decorated military career. None of Rome?s fashionable parties are complete without him. But he hides a secret. After his nerve is broken in Germany, even the thought of genuine armed combat is enough to send him into a cold sweat. But this doesn?t dissuade him from living off a false reputation so he can continue a life of womanising, wine and wild parties, as he is seduced by the many vices of Rome. However, his scandalous life is interrupted by a summons from the emperor?s wife. It ends his happy decadent life and returns him to Germany to assist the Roman legions in their greatest ever trial. The events will resound through history, in the dark forests of the Teutoburg ?

I have researched the calamitous history of the doomed legions that marched into the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, using a wide range of historical sources including the classical works of Tacitus and the more recent archaeological findings of the early 1990s in Kalkriese. I have put my complicated hero, who clearly suffers from the post-traumatic stress of his last encounter with the German tribes, at the centre of the events that rocked Rome to its foundations. How can a man, so flawed in so many respects, possibly impact on these terrible events? By his humanity, by coming to terms with his flaws, and learning to stop hating himself for them. It is a tale of betrayal and hardship, but also personal redemption.

Black and Deep Desires, William Shakespeare, Vampire Hunter by Graham Holderness Spotlight!

Book Details

  • Paperback: 262 pages
  • Publisher: Top Hat Books (September 25, 2015)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1785350633
  • ISBN-13: 978-1785350634

Who was the real architect of the Gunpowder Plot? Who was the first person to
wear a Guy Fawkes mask? Why was Shakespeare’s Dark Lady dark?
These and many other questions are answered in Graham Holderness’s new
novel, which combines historical fiction, psychological mystery and
supernatural thriller in a highly original and imaginative re-telling of the
Gunpowder Plot.

It is 1604. The Gunpowder Plotters are tunnelling under the palace of
Westminster, and confront an immovable obstacle. Guy Fawkes travels to
Europe to fetch help, and brings back more than he bargained for. Who is the
mysterious Dark Lady? Who is the man in the mask? Why is London over-run
by a plague of vampires, and who is going to defeat them?

From a Westminster vault to a Transylvanian mine, from the crypt of Lambeth
Palace to the under-stage of the Globe theatre, Black and Deep Desires takes
the reader on a tour of historical, psychological and mythical underworlds,
delving deep into some of history’s unexplored corridors, into the secret
thoughts of Catholic terrorists, and into the dark wellsprings of Shakespeare’s
poetry.

In Black and Deep Desires Graham Holderness combines the expertise of an internationally-recognised Shakespeare scholar, the narrative flair of his
2001 novel The Prince of Denmark, and the poetic sensibility that won his
verse collection Craeft a Poetry Book Society award.

Silence. William thought the play brilliant, masterful, awe inspiring
in its tragedy and terror. It had brought back to him all the horror and sublimity of his own recent encounters with the arch-assassin Guy Fawkes, with the Gunpowder Plot, and with the plague of the Undead; so much so that when Lady Macbeth leapt to her death, he shed a secret tear in memory of Ilona, his own late, lost, lamented Dark Lady. Forman sat in silence, staring at the page he had written, as if he too were seized with the overmastering power of the drama, or of the memories it released.

But only one opinion mattered, of course. Cecil’s. Was he pleased? Delighted? Indifferent? As usual nothing could be deciphered in the opaque liquidity of his eyes. He sat for a while in silence, looking at William.

About the Author

Graham Holderness is a senior academic and creative writer with over 40
published academic and creative books. He has published two novels; an
award-winning collection of poems; and a play performed at Shakespeare's
Globe, and by RSC actors in Stratford-upon-Avon. .
