Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Love’s Last Kiss
Sharon Wray

(a Deadly Force Novel)
Publication date: May 17th 2022
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Is love worth risking everything for?

Rose Guthrie, a reluctant erotic dancer, hasn’t trusted anyone since her parents’ death. Yet, to make money for her brother’s heart transplant, she agrees to deliver a sealed box to a mysterious buyer. Until the box—and the seller—disappear. Not surprised by the betrayal, her situation becomes more dangerous when she learns that a brutal arms dealer, known as the Prince, also wants the box and will kill everyone she loves for it. With one clue left, she breaks into Doom—Savannah’s violent, illegal fight club. Unfortunately, Doom’s referee—the sexy, ex-Army Ranger, Kade Dolan—stands in her way. Although she harbors a secret attraction to Kade, she can’t let him stop her. If she doesn’t deliver the box on time, she’ll lose everything. Including her own life.

Rose doesn’t trust disgraced Army Ranger, ex-con Kade Dolan, but that’s okay—he doesn’t trust himself either. Why? Because he lies to everyone about everything, including his time in Leavenworth and his job as an illegal fight club referee. Then there are his two side gigs. The first as an informant for the Prince, the leader of a secret, two-thousand-year-old private army. The second, loving from afar the beautiful, secretive Rose Guthrie. After the Prince discovers Rose is the courier of a lost 18th century artifact, he orders Kade to help her find the box before their greatest enemy does. If they succeed, Kade must return it to the Prince. If they fail, Kade must kill her.

Betrayal or death. When faced with an impossible choice, Kade can’t lie anymore, at least not when it comes to what he’s about to do the woman he loves. But when Rose uncovers Kade’s lies, they learn a terrible truth—the 18th century box holds a secret far deadlier than they imagined. A secret that could destroy them all.

EXCERPT:

Kade rubbed his forehead with his fist. How could he have made such a terrible mistake?

Since meeting Rose, he’d been unable to stay away from her, even when he’d barely known her. And now that they’d made love, he wasn’t sure he could leave her.

Yet, while he’d admitted his growing love for Rose, he’d also left out the most important details of his life. And Rose wasn’t stupid. She had to suspect he was hiding things. It was probably why, despite the passion she’d shown in his arms, she hadn’t spoken her own feelings aloud.

He couldn’t blame her. He was neither a prince nor charming. He was a man in an impossible situation. A man in love with a woman who had trust issues. A man who rarely asked for help because it made one beholden to others. A man about to commit the rest of his life to a murderous cult that dated back centuries.

He opened his eyes, determined to crush his pity party. Rose needed him, and they still had work to do. They had twenty-eight hours to meet the Prince’s deadline, and they still had no idea where to find that box.

When he saw the cup of hot coffee on his bedside table, his throat closed up. He’d never get enough of her sexually, but her inherent thoughtfulness was what made his heart brim with other unfamiliar emotions. Emotions he struggled to understand, much less define.

Yes, he loved her. But his feelings for her were so much more intense than he’d expected. Then again, other than Nin and his mother, he had little experience in loving women. Infrequent sex with random females from the club didn’t count.

He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and moved slowly, testing each tight muscle group before standing upright. Unfortunately, King George, who’d been guarding the bathroom door, decided Kade had committed an Act of Aggression. The cat bared his teeth.

Kade held out his hands and backed up. “Whoa, kitty.”

He hit the edge of the bed and fell onto his naked ass. The pillow flew across the room, and King George pounced after it. A moment later, Rose emerged from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her body. Wet strands of hair hung past her shoulders.

He drew the throw blanket over his lap and tried not to stare at her bare thighs. The towel acted more like a short, strapless dress, exposing way too much soft, bare skin.

The cat hissed at him again, and she shooed him away. “King George, be nice!”

The cat left the room with his back arched and his tail high in the air. As if to say to Kade, kiss this.

“I’m sorry.” Rose clutched the towel, keeping it tight around herself. “I’d like to say King George isn’t normally this nasty in the morning, but that would be a lie.”

Actually, Kade wasn’t thinking about the cat at all. He was too distracted by the drops of water that rolled down the curve of her neck and slipped between her breasts. His body hardened with one part in particular becoming almost painful. Needing a distraction, he took the mug and inhaled the scent of roasted beans. “I don’t mind King George. Nin had a cat like that once. It took a while, but I eventually won her over.”

She took a step forward. “How long is ‘a while’?”

He sipped his coffee and sighed. It was perfect. Hot, black, and not too bitter. “Seven years.”

She laughed and shifted awkwardly, her hands grasping the towel. “You don’t give up, do you?”

“Never.”

A Brilliant Night of Stars and Ice by Rebecca Connolly Book Spotlight!

Based on the remarkable true story of the Carpathia—the one ship and her legendary captain who answered the distress call of the sinking Titanic.

Shortly after midnight on April 15, 1912, the captain of the Carpathia, Arthur Rostron, wakes to a distress signal from the Titanic, which has struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage. Though information is scarce, Rostron leaps into action, determined to answer the call for help. But the Carpathia is more than four hours away, and there are more questions than answers: Will his ship hold together if pushed to never-before-tested speeds? What if he also strikes an iceberg? And with the freezing temperatures, will there be any survivors by the time the Carpathia arrives?

Kate Connolly is a third-class passenger on
Titanic, and she is among the last to receive instruction and help after it hits an iceberg. Despite the chaos of abandoning ship, Kate is able to board a lifeboat, though after seeing the Titanic sink into the abyss and hearing the cries from hundreds of people still in the water, she wonders if any rescue is even possible.

Told in alternating chapters from both Captain Rostron and Kate Connolly.

My Thoughts

Stories about the Titanic have always fascinated me, that said, I really did not know anything about the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the survivors of the sinking. Told in alternating chapters, the captain, Captain Rostron,  and crew of the Carpathia and the passengers in the third class of the Titanic, Kate Connelly is one of many Irish immigrants traveling to America to better themselves.

What starts out as a maiden voyage with a new ship going from Ireland to New York City turns out to be a relative nightmare for everyone involved. The ship hits ice and slowly takes on water and sinks fast. April 15, 1912, is the fateful night that will forever be in history as one of the tragedies of maritime history.

There were 2228 people on board the Titanic, 337 in first class, 285-second class, 721 in third class, and 885 crew members, and only 705 survived. Molly Brown, wife of a Colorado silver mine entrepreneur, and John Jacob Astor were among the famous survivors.

I found this novel based on facts, very enlightening and sad. All of the lives lost to the frigid waters, impeccable research went into the writing of the book. I found it interesting that the author described what happened to some survivors and the crew of the Carpathia. I read this book in a few sittings and was totally engrossed in the lives and deaths of the people involved. A definite page-turner.

I give the book 5 stars for the impeccable research and writing.
I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

Advance Praise:

“Reading A Brilliant Night of Stars and Ice made me realize that the full story of the tragedy of the unsinkable Titanic hasn't been shared yet. Captain Rostron's decisive and heroic actions as he prepared his crew for what they were about to encounter was inspirational and heartrending. I've found a new hero in a man who never hesitated in doing the right thing.” —Heather B. Moore, author of The Paper Daughters of Chinatown “A Brilliant Night of Stars and Ice is a haunting yet hopeful story of one man's rush to the rescue.” —Jen Geigle Johnson, author of A Foreign Crown

Striking the water was like a thousand knives being driven into one’s body. The temperature was 28 degrees, four degrees below freezing. -Charles Lightoller, Titanic Second Officer

Colonel John Jacob Astor IV was the wealthiest passenger on board, and believed to be one of the richest people in the world at the time, with a personal fortune that was estimated at between $90-150 million, which today would make him a billionaire a few times over.

You could actually walk miles along the decks and passages covering different ground all the time. (Here with Me)

“EVAN, I THINK WE’RE finished for today.”

My head lifts quickly as I meet her gaze. There is a look of pity masking her smile. She can pity me. It’s understandable. If I were in her shoes I’d pity the person I am right now. I chance a look at the clock and see that I still have a few more minutes. Maybe she feels how broken I am and needs time to regroup or find someone else to fix me.

“Okay,” I say hesitantly. I’m not sure I want to go through this again with another doctor, and definitely not a military one.

The doc folds the page of her notepad over and slides it into her desk. She smiles softly. “I’m going to tell you the same thing I told Ryley this morning. My schedule has been cleared this week so I can help get things resolved, or heading toward a resolution. My plan is to see you and Ryley together in the next couple of days to discuss what methods need to be implemented for both of you. My concern is EJ. You need to be able to bond with him and she understands that.”

She stands, coming over to me. “My suggestion, and I didn’t tell this to Ryley, is for you to spend some time with her. She’s hurting, Evan. While you thought everything was fine, aside from the fact that you were gone for so long, she buried you and tried to move on with her life. She’s making neither heads nor tails of what’s happening right now, but give her time without letting her slip through the cracks.”

My body sighs as I stand, as if it knows I don’t have to sit in that chair anymore. My feet shuffle toward the door, leaving the doc leaning up against her desk. “Thank you,” I say before opening the door and leaving the room.

The sun is bright and penetrating when I step out of the office. I have to shield my eyes quickly before I walk out into traffic. Once my eyes adjust, I look across the street to the park hoping to see Ryley sitting over there. If she were, it’d be so much easier to talk to her right now, although the thought of bringing her to base makes more sense to me since she wouldn’t be able to run away from me. Somehow, however, I don’t think Ryley wants to be anywhere near the base – not that I can blame her. At this point, I don’t want to be there either, except it’s the only choice I have since I’m not really welcome in my own home.

With only one other destination in mind, I text the guys and ask them to meet me. We need to figure out what’s going on. Each of our situations is different, yet we’re all experiencing the same thing. I also need to bite the bullet and call my mother. I’m not sure why I haven’t yet. I guess I’ve been waiting to see if our unearthly return would make the news, but so far nothing has been reported. Every time I learn another factoid about this deployment, I’m more convinced that it was not legit.

Pulling in front of Magoo’s, it would be easy to go drown my sorrows in beer, but I need to keep a level head about the situation. If I ask the wrong person a question, who knows what could happen? As is, someone high up has taken away my life. It doesn’t matter that I’m standing here today or not. I’m not the same person and someone needs to pay.

It’s a happy relief to walk in and be surrounded by friends. The bar stools are full of patrons, men I’ve served with in the past. Tables are thrown together to make bigger spaces and the same chairs are still here. An American flag hangs on the wall with various pictures surrounding it. All these pictures have been given or sent to Rick, the owner, for display. I refuse to look at the wall that holds all our past SEALs. I know the four of us are up there or maybe Rick has taken them down. Either way, I’m not looking, at least not today.

I’ve spent many hours trying to figure out what happened and answering all the questions I could. It’s very unsettling to know that people thought you were dead.

Mary lives in the heart of one of the Two Valleysin Las Cruces New Mexico, with her husband Norman SkipBailey, Jr. and their Cavachon child-dog, Java. In 2017 she wrote the one-act play, It is Blood,” which was selected for a performance by the Las Cruces Community Theatre. Whereas the Two Valleys series is a prequel to the notorious and unsolved murders of Albert J. Fountain and his eight-year-old son, It is Blood,” is a sequel to those events.

After winning an award for her debut historic fiction novel The Mesilla,” Mary has decided to focus on that genre — at least for the foreseeable future. Her writing is fast-moving, thought-provoking and with just enough wordsmithing to satisfy your artistic hankerings. While her writing has literary merit, she strives to capture the moment — the time and the place — and help you live in that moment.

Before releasing her debut novel, Mary dabbled in creative writing, including a weekly column in the Las Cruces Sun-News. Since retiring from a diverse career in various planning and design fields, she has devoted herself more fully to her writing, being a good spouse, serving her dog Java, and slipping away to the golf course when left unchained to the desk.

She turned back to him, wide-eyed. “I wish I had a knife.”

“Excuse me?”

“A knife, Mr. Watson. Muireall gave Elspeth a knife before she went to the Pendergast ball, and she hid it in a little pocket on the side seam of her dress. She stabbed a man and killed him.”

“You look particularly cheerful about that, Miss Thompson.”

“Oh, I am. I wish I’d been there to stick a knife in his eye while she stabbed him in the stomach, where Muireall had told her to.”

“A bit bloodthirsty?”

She shook her head. “No. Anyone who attacks our family will face consequences.”

There was no shading her view of the world. No gray area in her morality or her heart. There was right and there was wrong, and her decisions did not appear to lay heavy on her conscience. He let himself think about the aftermath if he had to pull out the pistol laying in the bag at his feet and wondered how it would feel to take a life or injure another person. Would he feel guilty? He thought he might. Kirsty Thompson, however, would have no second thoughts.

“Whatever are we to do if they confront us here on the train?” Kirsty whispered.

“I highly doubt they will. And Mr. Clawson has settled himself on the bench just ahead. And as you mentioned, Mr. Clawson did not see any of your attackers, only having the descriptions we gave him, so perhaps he is mistaken.”

She smiled up at him and thought about how much better she felt hearing his sensible words and conclusions. But then it occurred to her. “Mr. Watson, you are not stuttering anymore.”

He swallowed and turned his head, facing front. “Just so.”

“What does that mean, ‘just so’?” she asked, more than a little exasperated.

“It means I d-do . . . do not wish to discuss it.”

“Oh.” She stared out the train window, watching the fields and trees go by. “But sometimes when we talk about something that bothers us, it can make us feel better.”

The passing landscape was hypnotic, but Kirsty was not sleepy. She wanted to be alert in case Plowman’s men showed their faces, and she wanted to know more about Albert Watson. She wanted to know what sort of activity he did to make his chest so muscular and his stomach so flat. How wonderfully it narrowed to lean hips barely holding up his drawstring drawers. But what was more vivid in her mind’s eye was his face as he’d kissed her, the way he’d stared at her mouth, and that moment when he’d seemed to lose all control and pushed her against the door letting her feel the length of him against her belly. She groaned.

“Miss Thompson?”

“I—I didn’t eat much yesterday. I’m just hungry, Mr. Watson. I’ll be fine.”
