Excerpt:

Without consciously making a decision to do so, I grabbed my robe and headed for the door. If the thief was in the house, it might be my chance to identify him or her. One last glance at the globe showed the black was now mixed with a lot of orange. It looked like a Halloween decoration.

I turned off the light in the room, then quietly unlocked and opened my door. A flashlight would be a big help, but mine was packed in my suitcase. This was the first time I’d needed it. I eased out into the dark hall. A nightlight plugged in at the top of the stairs made a dim glow and I started in that direction. Moving slowly, I listened intently for any unusual noise. Everything seemed quiet and peaceful. I didn’t think anyone had stayed overnight in the house except Naomi and me. The stairs were solid and didn’t make a sound as I crept down. Time moved in slow motion and it seemed to take forever to reach the bottom. Once there, I began making my way to the living room. We always turned off the electronic security on that door at night since there were no potential buyers coming in and out after five. Even though I still hadn’t seen anything suspicious, somehow the atmosphere seemed wrong. Danger seemed to lurk in every dark corner. I was anxious to make sure the items displayed for viewing hadn’t been disturbed. Moving into the room and closing the door seemed to take forever. I couldn’t wait to get the light turned on. At first glance everything looked fine. Walking around the items for a closer look, I still didn’t see any evidence of tampering. Maybe I was overreacting and chasing ghosts. I decided to return to my room, but instead I veered into the study for a quick look. I wasn’t quite ready to admit my fears were just my nerves playing tricks. This time I hadn’t done the smart thing and called for Dan. He had to be tired of my crying wolf and not finding any evidence. I’d need a darn good reason before choosing to disrupt the entire household again.

At first the study also seemed undisturbed, but as my eyes adjusted, my heart skipped a beat. Someone had pushed the button that moved the desk aside. The light on the stairs leading down into the passageway had been turned on. Someone had entered the house, but I couldn’t call Dan from here and didn’t want to lose the chance to discover the identity of the intruder. All of a sudden my policy of not crying wolf didn’t seem so wise. I picked up a large letter opener from the desk and started down the stairs. The cloying feeling of danger increased with each step. The second bookcase on the left hand side of the hall was moved aside, revealing a passage I hadn’t known existed. The walls in this new passage were lined with artwork. Creeping silently along, I noticed that the art consisted of a variety of styles. At a quick glance I saw pen-and-ink, charcoals, watercolors and oils. I wouldn’t know what all was there until I had time to investigate. Right now my attention was focused on finding out who was down here and why. The passage climbed steadily upward. There didn’t seem to be any side doors, at least none that were obvious, until the end of the passage. Here one door opened to the right. By now my sense of direction had become confused and I wasn’t sure what part of the house this passage ran through, but it might be somewhere on the second floor.

Spoonfuls of Honey by Hattie Ellis Review!

Book Details

  • Hardcover: 192 pages
  • Publisher: Pavilion Books (September 4, 2014)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1909108294
  • ISBN-13: 978-1909108295

Just as honeybees are found all over the world, so are recipes that use their honey. Caribbean jerk, Spanish tapas, French sauces, British biscuits and Turkish cakes all gleam with the sweet stuff, and it can take no more than a spoonful of honey to bring its deep flavour to a dish. 'Spoonfuls of Honey' explores varieties of honey, explains what to consider when buying and storing, gives tips on its use in your cooking, and also explores the benefits to your health and the role bees and honey play in nature.

My Thoughts

What is honey? "Honey is a sweet food made by bees using nectar from flowers. The variety produced by honey bees is the one most commonly referred to, as it is the type of honey collected by most beekeepers and consumed by people."

Spoonfuls of Honey is a definitive book on anything you ever wanted to know about honey, from the different types of honey, to explanations of crystallization, how it is removed from the comb to nutrition. There is a section on honey in the kitchen along with recipes. There is another section on what kinds to purchase and storing of the honey. There are light honeys, medium honeys and dark honeys.

Did you know that in WWI, honey was used on the wounded to treat their wounds? Honey has significant antibacterial properties and some cultures use honey for cuts and abrasions. Bees play an important role in pollination of plants and flowers and are crucial to the environment.

You can use honey as is as a syrup, in butters, and in most recipes that use sugar. I love honey in tea, I prefer it to sugar and honey used in recipes for meat are fantastic. One of the recipes is Chicken with honey, lemon and thyme. That sure does sound good, I think I will make this one the next time I have chicken. Not only can you use honey on meats but on vegetables and fruits as well. Great in sauces and dips.

I love this book, I will certainly be going to this cookbook for recipes with honey. I highly recommend this book for the discerning cook!

Fat Witch brownies are a chocolate obsession, not just for the locals from New York City, but also for the many tourists who visit Chelsea Market. Patricia Helding and staff bake tender, moist, classic, and decadent morsels that people are willing to wait in line to buy. And following on the heels of Helding’s very successful Fat Witch Brownies, which revealed the author’s secret recipe (at long last), comes her new personal collection of yummy brownies, blondies, barks, bars, and more . . . along with tips and tricks for packaging and selling them at your next bake sale.

Here are mouthwatering recipes for Pecan Caramel Brownies; Red Velvet Brownies; Five Layer Chocolate Bars; Jelly Blondies; Cinnamon Bars; Pumpkin Oatmeal Bars; Coconut Macadamia Cookies; uniquely grownup flavors like Fruitcake Brownies and Rum Raisin Spice Bars; and even gluten-free treats like Meringue Drops and Almond Flour White Chocolate Cookies. Packed with astonishingly good, easy-to-bake recipes that will leave your family and friends agog, Fat Witch Bake Sale will be the go-to recipe source for bake sale season—or anytime.

My Thoughts
You have been asked to bake something for a fundraiser or bake sale. What do you make? How much do you need to bake. Baking for a bake sale is not always the easiest thing to do. You have to be careful of food allergies, gluten free and whatever else you need to do to contribute to this bake sale.

Do you love chocolate? Most people do and this cookbook has any kind of chocolate dessert you need. From brownies to bars and cookies. Of course there are other kind of recipes here too, anything for that lover of sweets. I have not tried any of the recipes yet, but I sure plan on it. I love to bake and I definitely want to try some recipes out on my family. The book not only has recipes but it has tips on what kind of ingredients to use, what utensils you need and how to wrap and package your bake sale items. With Christmas fast approaching, I think this would be the perfect gift for the baker in your life!

Praise for Omphalos

"Omphalos is a powerful word, a powerful connotation, as are the stories focused on in this excellent collection. The author leads the reader from one story to the next like an easy progress through the chambers of La Hougue Bie, followed by a reverse journey of revelation. To say too much of how this is cleverly achieved through the excellent use of letters, prose and poetry, I feel, would spoil the enjoyment of a potential reader. The skilful writing techniques used make it a thoroughly engrossing read. I have no qualms in recommending ‘Omphalos’ to the lover of historical fiction and to those who enjoy a well-crafted tale." - Nancy Jardine

Whither Thou Goest is the seventh book in Anna Belfrage’s series featuring time traveller Alexandra Lind and her seventeenth century husband, Matthew Graham.

In their rural home in the Colony of Maryland, Matthew and Alex Graham are still recovering from the awful events of the previous years when Luke Graham, Matthew’s estranged brother, asks them for a favour.

Alex has no problems whatsoever ignoring Luke’s sad plea for help. In her opinion Matthew’s brother is an evil excuse of a man who deserves whatever nasty stuff fate throws at him. Except, as Matthew points out, Luke is begging them to save his son – his misled Charlie, one of the Monmouth rebels – and can Charlie Graham be held responsible for his father’s ill deeds?

So off they go on yet another adventure, this time to the West Indies to find a young man neither of them knows but who faces imminent death on a sugar plantation, condemned to slavery for treason. The journey is hazardous and along the way Alex comes face to face with a most disturbing ghost from her previous life, a man she would much have preferred never to have met.

Time is running out for Charlie Graham, Matthew is haunted by reawakened memories of his days as an indentured servant, and then there’s the eerie Mr Brown, Charlie’s new owner, who will do anything to keep his secrets safe, anything at all.

Will Matthew deliver his nephew from imminent death? And will they ever make it back home?

About the AuthorAnna Belfrage

I was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result I’m multilingual and most of my reading is historical – both non-fiction and fiction.

I was always going to be a writer – or a historian, preferably both. Instead I ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for my most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career I raised my four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive … Nowadays I spend most of my spare time at my writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and I slip away into my imaginary world, with my imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in my life pops his head in to ensure I’m still there. I like that – just as I like how he makes me laugh so often I’ll probably live to well over a hundred.

I was always going to be a writer. Now I am – I have achieved my dream.

My Thoughts
I absolutely love this series. Reading an Anna Belfrage book is like a great cup of coffee, when you finish you are completely satisfied. This is the seventh book in the Graham Saga with Alexander Lind, time traveler living in the seventeenth century with her husband Matthew Graham. Together they have a large family with typical family situations. Their daughter Sarah, who wants nothing to do with the baby she bore because of a violent act upon her, son Samuel who is now living with an Indian tribe, daughter Ruth who is married to a minister and then there is David, who has a sense of adventure about him and a proclivity for getting into trouble.

When Alex and Matthew receive a letter from Matt's brother Luke, who neither of them like Luke, as he was pretty vicious to Matt at one time, which you need to read about in an earlier book. He has requested their help in rescuing his son, Charlie. Charlie got in with the wrong crowd and was arrested for treason and sentenced to life as an indentured servant on a Caribbean Island. They accept the request and they are off to another adventure. An adventure fraught with danger. The Burley brothers are dead and can't harm them anymore but there are still unsavory, dangerous people out for the Graham family.

The Graham Saga is such a wonderful series, very well written, strong characters and accurate historical detail. A historical fiction, romance and suspense all in one! I highly recommend the whole series!

A Murder Country by Brandon Daily Review!

 Book Details

  • Hardcover: 210 pages
  • Publisher: Knox Robinson Publishing; 1 edition (September 9, 2014)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1908483679
  • ISBN-13: 978-1908483676

The nineteenth century looms just a few years away, bringing with it the belief in progress and a new world. But for Josiah Fuller, William Corvin, and the Rider in the Appalachian backwoods and small towns of the late nineteenth century, there is nothing but a world where bloodshed is paid for in blood, and violence is the ultimate law of the land.

When seventeen-year-old Josiah Fuller comes home to find his parents hanged and mutilated and the family house burned to the ground, he sets off to find the man responsible for their murders and avenge their deaths. His journey takes him through new towns and wildernesses he has not seen before. He meets people who show him the realities of living in a violent world, forcing Josiah to decide what is most important to him: vengeance or grace.

Years after running away from home as a young boy, William Corvin returns with his new bride to take over the family's coal mining operation. Though he is haunted by the violence of his past, he sets out to live a peaceful life and start a family there. However, Corvin's hopes of peace are challenged when a horrible act of violence causes him to revert back to the man he once was.

After being visited by an angel in a dream years earlier, the Rider has become a man with violence in his blood, believing himself to be appointed by God to collect the souls of sinners. He travels around on his horse, killing whoever he feels is deserving of God's wrath and vengeance. These three men move along their own individual paths, their stories intersecting with one another, continually searching for an understanding of the violent world in which they live and their own actions within that world.

The novel examines the power and fragility of belief and conviction within humans, showing how one small act often leads to consequences that reach far beyond anyone's imagining.

The novel is inspired by Brandon's fascination with the tension between nature and man as well as the power and fragility of belief and conviction within humans.

Brandon is currently working on his second novel and several more short stories.

My Thoughts
How does one simple act affect those around you? It can have wonderful or devasting affects. That is what A Murder Country does. It takes place a in the latter part of the 1800's. The main characters Josiah Fuller is on a mission to find the person/s that killed his parents. A horrific act of violence has ruined the peaceful existence that William Corvin has worked so hard to maintain and lastly there is the Rider, a man who believes himself God and believes it is his duty to kill those he feels deserves it and collect their souls.

This is a novel that is very dark and brooding a western only in the sense of the time it takes place in, each man's paths crossing in different ways that leads  each one of them to face consequences for their actions and change what they believe in. This is not a happily ever after story by any means but it does make the reader think a little. Will they get their revenge? This is a historical thriller that will have the reader eagerly turning the pages. A well written first novel for this author. I especially like the cover as I am a person who definitely judges a book by it's cover. It captures the bleakness and austerity of the time. Go give this book a try!

I received a copy for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

The Coming Woman by Karen J.Hicks Spotlight!

At a time when Hillary Clinton is considering another run for the presidency, it might be helpful to consider the first woman who ran for president—and at a time when women were prohibited from voting!

"The Coming Woman" is a novel based on the life of feminist Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for U.S. President, 50 years before women could even vote!

Running for President wasn’t Victoria’s only first as a woman. She was also the first to own a successful Wall Street firm, the first to publish a successful national newspaper, and the first to head the two-million-member Spiritualist Association. She was the first woman to enter the Senate Judiciary Committee chambers to petition for woman's suffrage, her argument changing the entire focus of the suffragist movement by pointing out that the 14th and 15th Amendments already gave women the vote.

In her campaign for the Presidency, Victoria Woodhull boldly addressed many of the issues we still face today: equal pay for equal work; freedom in love; corporate greed and political corruption fueled by powerful lobbyists; and the increasing disparity between the rich and the poor, to name only a few. Her outspoken and common-sense ideas may shed a new perspective on the parallel conundrums of today’s world.

This bold, beautiful, and sexually progressive woman dared to take on society and religion. To make an example of the hypocrisy in what Mark Twain dubbed The Gilded Age, she exposed the extramarital affairs of the most popular religious figure of the day (Henry Ward Beecher). This led to her persecution and imprisonment and the longest, most infamous trial of the 19th century. But it did not stop her fight for equality.

Victoria’s epic story, set in the late 1800s, comes to life in a modern, fictional style, while staying true to the actual words and views of the many well-known characters.

The Coming Woman, by Karen J. Hicks, is a novel based on the life of feminist Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for U.S. President, 50 years before women could even vote!
Genres: Historical Fiction / Women’s Fiction

“What kind of confidence would it take for a woman to buck the old boy’s club of politics in 1872? More than 140 years pre-Hillary, there was Victoria Woodhull. This book takes you back with a breathtaking, present-tense bird’s eye view into a time when women’s liberation was primarily confined to one woman’s very capable, independent mind. I couldn’t put it down.” – Ruth Buzzi, Golden Globe Award winner and Television Hall of Fame inductee

“The Coming Woman is a great read and a long overdue biography written beautifully by Ms. Hicks. Victoria Woodhull comes alive in each and every paragraph; a vital strength and spirit in Woodhull propels her to run for president of the United States when women weren’t even allowed to vote! What a woman, what a book! An inspiring must read for every woman and any adventurous men! Thank you, Ms. Hicks for finally telling her colorful story.” – Jennifer Lee Pryor, author of Tarnished Angel: A Memoir and President, Indigo, Inc.

"Sadly, too many Americans have never heard of Victoria Woodhull, let alone learned of her story: her revolutionary campaign for the presidency at a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote, her support for worker’s rights, or her feminist commitment to equality, a century before the official battle over the Equal Rights Amendment. But in ‘The Coming Woman,’ Karen Hicks brings Woodhull’s efforts to life, and reminds us that some of our nation’s greatest figures aren’t always featured in the history books. It is a riveting account of an amazing woman and her struggle for justice and human dignity, told in an engaging and eminently readable style.” - Tim Wise, author, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son
