The ladies chatted as they walked. Anna, as always, cut to the chase. “So how’s it been going with that handsome Detective Spinelli of yours lately?”

Shannon glanced at her watch and then shot a smile over her shoulder. “Well, you took a bit longer than I expected,” she teased.

Anna returned her smile. “I held out as long as I could. You know I’m living vicariously through you, so don’t keep this old lady waiting here.”

Shannon stopped and waited for Anna to catch up. “Actually, he’s been kind of quiet and distant since the whole Valentine’s Day episode. I can’t seem to make him realize it wasn’t his fault. Bethany had issues.” Just saying Bethany’s name sent a bone-chilling disturbance deep into her core.

Though the temperature still hovered around forty degrees, Anna swiped her gloved hand over her moist brow. “The poor guy. I’m not sure what to say. I can’t imagine how it must feel to have a psycho ex-girlfriend kill four of his present girlfriend’s ex-lovers, attempt to kill him and then kill herself. And on Valentine’s Day of all days. The day I was sure he would pop the big question to you. What should have been one of the biggest and best days of his life turned out to be the worst.”

“There’s not a day goes by I don’t think of that awful day. And he won’t talk about it. The second I bring up the topic, he clams up.” Shannon sighed. “And honestly, I really thought he would propose as well.”

“With all that’s gone on in the past three months, I’m surprised he let you out of his sight to come along on our girls’ weekend.”

“I know. I could tell by the look in his eyes when I told him what our plans for this weekend, he wasn’t pleased. He asked me to reconsider, but I couldn’t. I really just needed to get away from the city and everything that has gone on lately. At first he insisted upon coming along, but Captain Jackson assigned some hot case to him, Walker and Marsh. So he couldn’t get away.”

Shannon’s eyes watered. Over the past three months, she’d found herself the happiest she’d ever been, the saddest, and the most frightened. She’d met Spinelli, and they’d gotten off to a rocky start. But she fell in love with him and couldn’t be any happier, in regard to their relationship. During that same time frame, two of her co-workers had been murdered; she had been kidnapped and was next on the murder’s list. If Spinelli hadn’t stepped in and saved the day, she would have been killed. The whole rescue was like something right out of a fairy tale with a knight in shining armor coming to the rescue of an endangered maiden. Truth be told, he was actually dressed in a Santa suit rather than armor. But that didn’t matter to her, he was her knight no matter what he wore. And then of course, there was the issue with Spinelli’s ex-girlfriend who sought a murderous revenge against the both of them. Again, Nick stepped in and saved the day. My hero.

Anna stepped forward and hugged Shannon. “I’m so sorry all this crap happened to you. You so didn’t deserve any of this, but you can’t change what’s already happened. The only thing you can do is figure out how to deal with it and move forward.”

“I know.”

Shannon’s cell phone vibrated. She pulled it from her zippered pocket and glanced at the display. She couldn’t help but smile as she read the text from Spinelli.

Anna giggled. “What is that, number ten already?”

Shannon looked up and caught Anna’s amused gaze. “Eight, but who’s counting? Every hour on the hour.” Though he went a bit overboard with the number of texts, Shannon--and the butterflies in her stomach--welcomed each and every one. His overprotectiveness warmed her heart. Like a schoolgirl, she desperately missed him already; they hadn’t even been apart a full day.

Shannon shot off a quick response before she slipped her phone back into her pocket.

The ladies continued down the trail, Shannon leading the way. The wind picked up as they crossed over from the hardwoods to the cedars. The damp mossy smell let her know they neared the lake.

“Shannon.”

“What?” Shannon asked as she looked over her shoulder.

Anna shrugged. “I didn’t say anything.”

“You didn’t say my name?”

Anna pulled a frown. “No.”

“Oh, hmm.” Shannon would have sworn she’d hear someone say her name. She tried to shrug it off, tell herself it was just the wind, but the unease spiraling in the pit of her stomach forced her senses into ‘full alert’ mode.

 The Excerpt

 "Where is the doctor?" Her voice is deeper than you would expect. There is a muffled strain on the word "doctor."
"He's still scrubbing in," comes a voice from behind the image intensifier, a large semicircle that loom over the room like a half-moon.
The nurse moves toward the swinging door on the opposite side of the suite. She normally wouldn't go out of her way to speak with any of the doctors in the cath lab, but something isn't right.
Her long fingers fidget against the almost invisible golden chain around her neck, from which swings a small pendant with a bright cherub angel.
..."Thank you for your concern, but I know what I'm doing."
..."But...I mean, you're going to be working on Gwendolyn Cartwright."
"Correct. Is that it?"
"Well, no. I saw her angiogram results and--"
"I wasn't aware that it was your job to read my patient's angiograms."
"Well, no--"
"But apparently you do it anyway." He puts his hands on his hips and cocks his head.
"She's technically not your patient," the nurse says a little too loudly. "It's not like you ordered this procedure on your own. Listen, I'm not trying to blame anyone here. I just think there's been a mistake."
"I see. Thank you for your concern." The doctor's curt tone tells her the conversation is over. "I'll see you in the OR."
Something makes the nurse jump in front of him. His mouth opens. This is unexpected.
"I know what a blockage looks like," she announces. "And she barely has one. Not one worth operating on anyway."

His eyes squint as he looks down at her. "Are you telling me that I don't know when a patient needs an angioplasty?"

 The Review

 I usually read historical fiction, but once in awhile I like to read a medical thriller. Saw this on my bookshelf and decided to give it a go. The book starts out with a nurse noticing that a patient is being prepped for a surgery that she feels is a mistake. Besides that the doctor doing the surgery is not the patient's doctor. The doctor of course is not happy with a nurse telling him what he should and should not be doing. The surgery goes forward.

 Gwendolyn Cartwright is the patient being operated on, she is a young rising country star who only has a 20% blockage and that does not warrant an angioplasty especially at her young age. There are many risks related to any surgery of course but she was told by her doctor that this was a needed procedure.

 Kate Katelinson is an investigative reporter looking for a piece to write that is not a fluff piece. She is at the hospital and runs into an old college roommate who she has not seen in 10 years. They had a falling out and had not been in touch. Kate is concerned for her friends demeanor and she starts questioning her friend. What her friend tells her has Kate's wheels rolling and she starts an investigation into why there are so many angioplasties being done at this particular hospital.

 While investigating she becomes embroiled in an infatuation with a hospital exec. She really is not ready for another relationship, as she recently broke up with her boyfriend. Can she trust this man though, he works at the hospital and should know what is going on. As she continues into her investigation, one of the people at the hospital that she coerces into helping her with information, dies. To make matters worse, Gwendolyn also dies and this creates a scary situation for Kate. She does not know who to trust and she doesn't believe that these people died of natural causes, she thinks they were killed.

 What ensues is a fast paced thriller that will thrill any fan of medical thrillers. Characters are believable and well written. The medical aspect of the story is also well written, but of course it would be, the author is an M.D. and she uses her expertise brilliantly. I like a story that moves along and this one did for me. I look forward to the next in the series.

The Author

 Severin Devere was standing on deck when the case of Madeira was hoisted aboard the Boyne. He considered sending the crate back to shore, but that would only attract more notice, and drawing further attention to the crippled man-of-war in New York Harbor was the last thing he wanted to do.

 He had been sent to America for the purpose—among other things—of fetching John Burgoyne home quietly and discreetly. The King and Lord Germain, the secretary of state for America, had read Burgoyne’s letters from Boston describing the fiasco of Bunker Hill—for which he had been present but not in command—and his proposals for pacifying the colonies. They had found these observations full of good sense. Now they wished to hear more, preferably without alerting the Rebels to their intentions.

 Unfortunately, John Burgoyne did nothing quietly or discreetly.

 Severin’s faint hope that the general had exercised a modicum of good judgment in his transaction with the wine merchant was dashed when he broke the seal on the receipt that accompanied the crate.

 Burgoyne had bought the Madeira under his own name, which meant his departure from Boston was no longer secret.

 The other letter that had come aboard with the wine was also addressed to Burgoyne. It was sealed with cheap wax, written in a round, girlish hand, and scented with a whiff of scandal. Marvelous. Severin pocketed the missive and descended below deck to the general’s cabin.

 Four lieutenants had been displaced to create Burgoyne’s apartment, and part of the wardroom had been cannibalized. Captain Hartwell had balked at removing any of the guns, though, so Burgoyne had draped the thirty-two-pounders with thick furs and Indian-tanned hides and brightly beaded garments he had bought as souvenirs.

 The general sat at his breakfast table wearing a striped silk banyan and an embroidered turban. His slippered feet rested upon a Turkey carpet. On the table alongside the serving dishes was spread a map with a carefully penciled line running from Quebec to Albany.

 This was the contradiction in Burgoyne’s character that fascinated Severin. The man had an appetite for luxury, and a tendency toward egotism and bombast, but he wasn’t lazy. A few years past fifty, he had the vigor and ambition of a man half his age, evident in his still black hair and avid, heavy-lidded eyes.

 “Your wine has come aboard,” said Severin. He dropped the two letters on the table beside Burgoyne’s notes and gestured for the servant to leave. The man scurried from the room.

 “Excellent,” said Burgoyne, slicing into a chop.

 “Lord Germain had hoped that your departure from Boston might go unnoticed by the Rebels. You gave the wine merchant your name and direction.”

 Burgoyne shook his head. “Secrecy is impossible. Everyone will know I have gone when I am not present at The Blockade of Boston. If you had wanted my departure to go unnoticed, we should have delayed it until after the performance.”

 He meant his farce, being rehearsed for a benefit night at Faneuil Hall, though Severin had never known the proceeds of such events to reach any of the advertised widows and orphans.

 “Give me leave to doubt the noteworthiness of a general missing the odd theatrical event when his country is at war,” said Severin.

 “War is theater,” said Burgoyne. “I should have thought that a man with your . . . expertise . . . regarding the savages of North America would know that. Do the Mohawk not paint their faces before going into battle?”

 Severin’s Mohawk ancestry was one of the reasons he had been chosen to fetch Burgoyne, so he might advise the general, who desired to employ native allies in his proposed campaign next year. The difficulty was that Burgoyne had proved disposed to respect the opinion of an Englishman—any Englishman—on native questions more than that of a man who had lived among the Mohawk, especially one the general believed was tainted by Indian blood, like Severin.

 “Think of our visit to New York as a mummer’s play, then,” advised Severin, “and perform the role accordingly. Lord Germain does not wish the Rebels informed of your movements, sir. There must be no more transactions with Van Dam, or anyone else in New York.”

 Burgoyne sighed. “I do not need your advice on dealing with shopkeepers, Devere. If I had not used my name, Van Dam would have sent me an inferior vintage at double the price.”

 “And now he will make up his loss on the wine by peddling the news that you are in New York. For those alert to affairs of consequence, your recall to London will tell them all they need to know about the character of the next campaign.” Generals Gage and Howe had always treated the colonials like brothers, because they were decent men and they had ties to America. They were doing everything within their power to avoid bloodshed and bring about a peace resolution to the conflict. “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne would not.

 The general made a little show of setting down his fork and leaned back in his chair. “Have you considered that such news might serve to scare sense into these people?”

 It was a widely held opinion that the Americans were spoiled children, that a show of force was all that was needed to bring them into line.

 “Lexington Green and Bunker Hill,” said Severin, “argue otherwise.”

 Burgoyne waved away the two biggest British military disasters in recent memory. Evidently he not only preferred an Englishman’s understanding of Indians, but gave little weight to an Indian’s views on the English. “Poor planning and poorer leadership.”

A native of Bergenfield, New Jersey, Donna graduated from Yale with a degree in Classics and Art History. For many years she managed architecture and interpretation at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, and wrote and directed the Witch City’s most popular Halloween theater festival, Eerie Events. She later earned an MFA in film production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Donna has been a sorority house mother, a Disney/ABC Television Writing Fellow, a WGA Writer’s Access Project Honoree, and a writer on the ABC primetime drama, Cupid. Her screenwriting credits include episodes of the animated series, Tron: Uprising. Her short fiction has appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine and Albedo One. The director of several award-winning short films, her most recent project, The Night Caller, aired on WNET Channel 13 and was featured on Ain’t It Cool News. About John A. Connell

John was born in Atlanta, Ga., then spent his childhood in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, NYC, and D.C. before moving back to Atlanta at the age of 13. While at Georgia State University his fascination with human thought drove him to study Psychology, and when that didn’t satisfy his curiosity abut the human spirit, he turned to Anthropology, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology. During that time and after graduation he was a keyboardist and singer in rock and jazz bands, while simultaneously dabbling in writing short stories. To work his way through college and beyond, he stumbled upon some rather unique jobs: stock boy in a brassiere factory, courier for the Georgia State Health Department delivering gonorrhea and syphilis cultures from OB-GYN offices, a repairer of newspaper vending machines, a stint as an apprentice machinist, and a printing press operator.

John’s love of storytelling is what compelled him to switch to a career in film, even though he knew nothing about film and no one in the business. He “logically” chose camerawork (not knowing anything about film cameras either) as a way into the business. He started in the film business in Atlanta and then moved to Los Angeles and worked his way up the ranks in the camera department to become a camera operator for both movies and TV. He also worked as an assistant aerial cinematographer using helicopters that took him all over the world. He kept at the writing, frequently expressing his deep desire to fulfill that dream. And then someone finally said, “shut-up, sit down and write.” And so he did. Between film projects or during lighting setups, he studied the craft of writing and produced mostly action/adventure screenplays. He then toyed with the idea of making two of his screenplays into YA novels. That’s when he discovered the rich potential for storytelling that novels provide, and with it his true passion.

During this time he met and married a French woman in Los Angeles. While he was working on a hit TV show as a camera operator, his wife was offered an excellent opportunity in Paris, France. They jumped at the chance, though they’d just bought their dream house two months earlier, and John had the French language proficiency of a two-year-old! He’d always wanted to live in Europe, particularly Paris, and it provided him the opportunity to devote full time to writing. He still takes occasional film jobs in the US. He now speaks French moderately well, though hardly a day goes by when his wife doesn’t roll on the floor with laughter at his attempts.

Currently, his wife and he live in Versailles, France, trying suburban living for a while, but they miss the energy of Paris and plan to move back there next year.
