A spellbinding new novel of contraband masterpieces, tragic love, and the unexpected legacies of forgotten crimes, Ayelet Waldman’s Love and Treasure weaves a tale around the fascinating, true history of the Hungarian Gold Train in the Second World War.
In 1945 on the outskirts of Salzburg, victorious American soldiers capture a train filled with unspeakable riches: piles of fine gold watches; mountains of fur coats; crates filled with wedding rings, silver picture frames, family heirlooms, and Shabbat candlesticks passed down through generations. Jack Wiseman, a tough, smart New York Jew, is the lieutenant charged with guarding this treasure—a responsibility that grows more complicated when he meets Ilona, a fierce, beautiful Hungarian who has lost everything in the ravages of the Holocaust. Seventy years later, amid the shadowy world of art dealers who profit off the sins of previous generations, Jack gives a necklace to his granddaughter, Natalie Stein, and charges her with searching for an unknown woman—a woman whose portrait and fate come to haunt Natalie, a woman whose secret may help Natalie to understand the guilt her grandfather will take to his grave and to find a way out of the mess she has made of her own life.
A story of brilliantly drawn characters—a suave and shady art historian, a delusive and infatuated Freudian, a family of singing circus dwarfs fallen into the clutches of Josef Mengele, and desperate lovers facing choices that will tear them apart—Love and Treasure is Ayelet Waldman’s finest novel to date: a sad, funny, richly detailed work that poses hard questions about the value of precious things in a time when life itself has no value, and about the slenderest of chains that can bind us to the griefs and passions of the past.

Praise for Love and Treasure

“Love and Treasure is something of a treasure trove of a novel. Its beautifully integrated parts fit inside one another like the talismanic pendant/ locket at the heart of several love stories. Where the opening chapters evoke the nightmare of Europe in the aftermath of World War II with the hallucinatory vividness of Anselm Kiefer’s disturbing canvases, the concluding chapters, set decades before, in a more seemingly innocent time in the early 20th century, are a bittersweet evocation, in miniature, of thwarted personal destinies that yet yield to something like cultural triumph. Ayelet Waldman is not afraid to create characters for whom we feel an urgency of emotion, and she does not resolve what is unresolvable in this ambitious, absorbing and poignantly moving work of fiction.”
—Joyce Carol Oates
“One is quickly caught up in Love and Treasure with its shifting tones and voices—at times a document, a thriller, a love story, a search—telescoping time backwards and forwards to vividly depict a story found in the preludes and then the after-effects of the Holocaust. Waldman gives us remarkable characters in a time of complex and surprising politics.”
—Michael Ondaatje
“Love and Treasure is like the treasure train it chases: fast-paced, bound by a fierce mission, full of bright secrets and racingly, relentlessly moving.”
—Daniel Handler
“Complex and thoughtful, moving and carefully researched, this is a novel to love and treasure.”
—Philippa Gregory
“This lush, multigenerational tale… traces the path of a single pendant…. Inventively told from multiple perspectives, Waldman’s latest is a seductive reflection on just how complicated the idea of ‘home’ is–and why it is worth more than treasure.”
—Publishers Weekly
“A sensitive and heartbreaking portrayal of love, politics, and family secrets . . . Waldman’s appealing novel recalls the film The Red Violin in its following of this all-important object through various periods in history and through many owners. Fans of historical fiction will love the compelling characters and the leaps backward and forward in time.”
—Mariel Pachucki, Library Journal

My Thoughts
Love and Treasure is heartbreaking story about the atrocities of World War II against the Hungarian Jews. Told in three different parts, first of Jack Wiseman to his granddaughter just before Jack dies. Jack tells the story of his time as an American Jewish soldier who after the war is commissioned to oversee the items from the Hungarian Gold Train. This was a shipment of items, ie. paintings, jewelry, furnishings, silver and anything else that you can imagine, that was confiscated from the Jewish people of Hungary. Jack has a particular item, a peacock necklace, that he wants his granddaughter to return to it's rightful owner or heirs. This was an item that Jack took from the storehouse because it intrigued him but he did feel guilty for having taken it.

The second part of the story is about Natalie Stein, Jacks granddaughter, who goes to Hungary and Israel to return this necklace to the heirs. While there she comes in contact with a man who is on a similar mission. He is looking for the painting of a woman wearing this peacock necklace. This leads the two of them on a search that uncovers a story of the original owner of the necklace.

Third narrator is of a Freudian psychiatrist who is charged with healing a young woman who is deemed by her parents to be be having hysterics. All these characters are brought together to tell a wonderful story about what happened to the Jewish people in Hungary and how they were treated and ultimately killed in the camps of Hitler. People who have lost not only their possessions but sometimes whole families wiped out by an insane dictator.

I loved this story and I feel that is should be read not only for its historical value, but for the warmth and compassionate characters that the author created to tell this heartbreaking story of a resilient people, ostracized because of their religion. I highly recommend this book. I intend to read more by this author.

I received this book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my opinion.

The Captive by Grace Burrowes Release Day Spotlight!!

Book Information

Author: Grace Burrowes
Release Date: July 1, 2014
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Genre: Historical Romance

Summary

Captured and tortured by the French, Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia, survives by vowing to take revenge on his tormentors. Before the duke can pursue his version of justice, Gillian, Countess of Greendale, reminds him that his small daughter has suffered much in his absence, and needs her papa desperately.

Gilly endured her difficult marriage by avoiding confrontation and keeping peace at any cost. Christian's devotion to his daughter and his kindness toward Gilly give her hope that she could enjoy a future with him, for surely he of all men shares her loathing for violence in any form. Little does Gilly know, the battle for Christian's heart is only beginning.

Excerpt

The countess brought Christian’s hand up, holding the back of it against the extraordinary softness of her cheek. Until he’d taken liberties with her in the library, he’d forgotten how wonderfully, startlingly soft a woman’s cheek could be. As soft as sunshine and summer rain, as soft as the quiet of the English countryside.
“Shall we sit?” he asked, though she’d likely release his hand if they sat. He was a widower, though, and she ought not to begrudge him simple human contact when he’d been so recently bereaved.
She let him lead her to a shaded bench near the roses, the morning air faintly redolent of their perfume. When Christian seated her, the countess kept his damaged hand in hers.
“I was not allowed to garden at Greendale,” she said, fingers drifting over his knuckles. “The estate had gardens, because his lordship would not be seen to neglect his acres, but I was forbidden to walk them, or to dig about in the good English soil, or to consult with the gardeners regarding the designs and plantings.”
Based on the studied casualness of her tone, this prohibition had been irksome.
“You are free to garden here all you like,” Christian said. “I ask only that you not disturb my mother’s roses.”
“They are lovely.”
“She was lovely.”
Another silence, while Christian became aware of his surroundings beyond the small hand holding his. The roses were in their early summer glory, and why Polite Society insisted on staying in Town through most of June was incomprehensible, when the alternative was the English countryside. The sunshine was a perfectly weighted beneficence on his cheek, the scent of the gardens heavenly, and the entire morning aurally gilded with the fluting chorus of songbirds.
He wanted to kiss the lady beside him again, not in thanks, not as a good-night benediction, but for the sheer pleasure of the undertaking.

Read an Excerpt

The boy barely had time to put on his shoes without socks before Daedalus shoved a backpack with money and other supplies into his hands. The boy quickly slipped the pack over his shoulders before climbing into the hidden hole in the wall.
Daeda would always tell the boy the same thing when he showed him how to access whatever particular route he had devised, "If you should ever have to use this, run. Run as fast as you can." Daeda said to the boy as he chiseled out drywall and re-plumbed the pipes to allow room enough for the boy but no larger, "Don't look back. Don't go to friends or neighbors for help, because they might be compromised too. Try to escape and lose yourself the way I've taught you."
So the boy escaped. The boy had watched only briefly through a crack in the hidden wall partition, as the intruders tied Daeda down and began 'questioning' him on the whereabouts of the missing child, before climbing down between the plumbing and electrical pipes to the small crawlspace underneath the building.
The sounds of torture still echoed in the boy's head as he squeezed himself through the tight passage that would eventually lead him to an access tunnel to the sewer system and into the darkness below the city.
Once in the sewer tunnels, the boy flicked on the flashlight Daeda had supplied in the backpack. The light it created flickered across dark, dank walls, while the ceiling overhead seemed to be crumbling away. In this subterranean environment, no matter how carefully he tread, there was a danger he could lose his footing on the slippery surface, so his progress at first was slow, listening to the hushed drip of water.
That is until he heard the enormous explosion come from what he thought was his old home. The heat from the blast was coming at him and despite the danger of slipping in the dark he began running as fast as he could. The air was close and putrid, making it unpleasant and difficult to breathe as he furiously made his way through the underground labyrinth. Far off in the distance, the sound of a gushing torrent from an unseen channel could be faintly heard and so he followed that and it wasn't long before he reached a metal ladder leading up to the surface. Wanting nothing more than to be free of the black subterranean pit he began to climb.
At that time of night the streets were completely deserted, but the boy wasted no time and began sprinting down the road. Despite not even knowing from whom he was running, it was the terror of being caught that drove the boy to run faster than he ever had, before eventually falling in a heap to the ground. Crying out in pain and gasping to catch his breath he could do nothing but lay there for a time. The boy pulled his bloodied knees in and held them tucked up against his chest forming a tight fetal position.
While on the ground, the boy imagined a form of himself looking down at his own curled-up body. The duplicate briefly stood there before it ran away. Escaping.
The second time he envisioned another, more confident version of himself standing up, as if it were ready to charge back up towards the house taking on anything that might still be there. Once again, this more fearless self-image sprinted off in the direction the first one had. This mental exercise made him feel better, so the boy repeated the process over and over in his head. Each time a version of himself ran away, he wished the horrible memories and emotions would leave with it. He drove away the terrible thoughts that hurt him so badly, until his heart rate and breathing slowed down and his body relaxed.
He rose to his feet disoriented by this self-inflicted amnesia. The horrific memories were gone but so were other vital aspects of himself.
Lost and confused, he walked in the same direction he had imagined himself going while still huddled in a ball on the ground, a short while earlier. Still burdened by a sense of grief and loss but now not knowing why, each step carried more weight than his small limbs could measure.
The boy's first night found him hidden away in the local urban sprawl. He collapsed in exhaustion behind a fast-food restaurant chain's trash bin. At that point he was so tired and hungry he didn't care anymore if he was even found or not. Hunger and discomfort outweighed his fear of capture. But the pursuers, if there ever were any, never came for him that night.
He dug into his backpack and pulled out some money to buy some food. He was cold and hungry with nowhere to go. An empty vessel lost at sea, yet not alone.
The P.R.I.M.E. was never truly alone.

In Accord by Kristin Chambers Review!

About the Book
It's October in Buffalo as four long-time friends, The In Accord Book Club, gather around a fireplace while a fierce windstorm amasses strength outside. They are deeply disappointed with the unfaithful characters and lackluster resolution of the novel they've met to discuss. When they agree to each write a richer, more satisfying conclusion in lieu of their next month's selection, none has any idea of the tempests about to erupt in her own world. Their intertwined lives and personal journeys, by turns humorous, sad, touching, and inspiring, furnish the raw ingredients for the new epilogue each writes.

                                                                   About the Author
KRISTIN CHAMBERS designs curriculum at the Center for Development of Human Services at Buffalo State University College. She is a former professor of social work and worked for many years as a youth and family counselor. The author of two plays, Tuesday's Child and North to Freedom, she lives on a windswept hilltop in Hinsdale, NY.

My Thoughts:
In Accord is a unique story about four friends, Maggie, Hannah, Ellen and Julie who meet monthly to discuss the books they read. These ladies have very different lives but have similar interests when it comes to reading books they choose. They find that they are very unhappy with the ending of a particular book so have agreed to each write a different ending to the story. These endings I think are influenced a lot with what is going on in their won lives. The book also tells the individual stories of these friends. We learn about the intricacies of marriage and raising children, how cancer can be a devastating illness, and how over the course of the story how each woman realizes that friendship can be a wonderful thing and that they need to make some changes in their lives to be happy. Told with humor, compassion and love, this is a great story. I love how the author intermingled each of the women's stories into a novel that is definitely unputdownable . If you love a great women's fiction novel than you can not go wrong with this one.

I received this book from http://www.kelleyandhall.com and was not monetarily compensated for said review.
