The Making Of… “The Viking’s Witch” (Part 1) By Kelli A. Wilkins! @KWilkinsauthor

The Making Of… “The Viking’s Witch” (Part 1)
By Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased to announce the release of my latest historical romance. The Viking’s Witch is set in Celtic Scotland and blends a sensual love story with adventure and paranormal elements.
In this blog, I’ll discuss how the book came about, the research involved, and the violence that takes place in the story. (Yes, even though it’s a romance, everything’s not all hearts and flowers.) In Part Two, I’ll talk about creating the characters, developing Odaria’s magic “witch” powers, and more.

The Viking’s Witch is a traditional historical romance with paranormal elements set in Scotland in 803 A.D.  The main character, Odaria, is what they called a witch back then—nowadays we’d call her a psychic and a healer. Here’s the plot summary:

The Viking’s Witch
Scotland, 803 A.D.
About to be burned at the stake by her fellow villagers, Odaria does what any betrayed witch facing certain death would do. She calls down a curse. Within seconds, rampaging Norsemen raid the village, capturing everyone except her.
But her reprieve is short-lived, and Odaria lands in the clutches of the Norse leader Rothgar. Can she remain true to herself and fight her growing attraction to this domineering man, or will she fall under his influence and be used for his ambitions?
After Rothgar witnesses Odaria’s powers firsthand, he strikes a bargain with her. The raven-haired beauty will use her magical abilities to help him with his quest in exchange for safe passage off the isle. But can this cunning woman be trusted, or is she using him to exact vengeance on her village?
Together they must fight bloodthirsty villagers, battle a mutinous band of Norsemen, find a missing Norse ship, and learn to trust each other…before time runs out.
***
Interviewers and readers have asked what my inspiration was when I was writing the book, and are curious about how much research I had to do to create the unique characters and detailed setting.

Like many of my books, the idea for the story came to me out of the blue. One day, the entire opening sequences popped into my head and I knew I had to start writing. At the time, I had the basic plot (Viking warrior falls in love with Celtic witch), but I wasn’t sure about most of the details, like the character names, their backstories, and the subplot. All of that came later, along with the secondary characters, Brennan and Nordskog. (I’ll talk more about them in Part Two of this blog.)

Scotland is a beautiful place and I’ve always wanted to set a book there. (I still may write another historical set in the Highlands.) Having the story take place on the remote Orkney Islands added a sense of urgency and tension to the plot.

In a sense, Rothgar and Odaria are “trapped” on the island and are forced to deal with a pack of angry villagers and other Norsemen. The action is condensed into a few days on a very small island, so there’s really nowhere for the characters to go. They’re forced to work together in order to get off the island—and survive.

Before I wrote a word, I had to do a lot of research on where to set the story. I knew the book would take place in Scotland where the Vikings traveled in their early years of exploration, but I didn’t want it to be a populated location. Once I decided on the Orkneys, I had to pick which island to set the story. (There are 70 different islands, but only 20 are inhabited.)

I also had to research what life was like in that time period for Odaria and Rothgar. (What kind of clothes did they wear? What food did they eat? How did Norsemen travel so far? What were their ships like?) Odaria and Rothgar come from different backgrounds and technically would have been speaking different languages, so I had to blend their two cultures together in a way that flowed with the book.

After I got a feel for what everyday life was like for each of them, I weaved the details into the story. For example, Rothgar’s Norse background intrigues Odaria, and she is curious about their clothes, customs, food, how they travel, etc. Having Rothgar show her how he lives was a good way to introduce readers into the culture.

And of course, if you were living back in 803 with bands of invading Norsemen and crazy villagers, you could expect some measure of violence. Readers might think that there’s no place for any violence in a romance, but I think that type of realism (when kept in check) enhances the story.

In 803, life was completely different from how we live now—especially on a remote island. People got hurt, took sick, and died. The Viking’s Witch features a violent man (Brennan) and a group of Norsemen with terrible reputations, so including some violence in the story is necessary to move the plot along—while also helping the reader get deeper into the minds and lives of the characters.

I didn’t cringe when I wrote the “gritty” scenes; I was happy to include them. I like history and it drives me crazy when people in 1500, 1791, or 1870 are perfectly clean and neat, have perfect teeth, and look like they stepped out of a beauty salon. In The Viking’s Witch I included enough details to bring the story alive, yet showed how some degree of conflict was necessary for Rothgar’s and Odaria’s survival.

I hope you enjoyed Part One of this “Inside Look” at The Viking’s Witch. Next time, I’ll delve more into the characters and discuss Odaria’s magic.
Here’s a mini-excerpt from The Viking's Witch:

Rothgar inched closer to her. She tried to move away, but she had nowhere to go. Her back was pressed against the door. Rothgar grinned and cupped her chin in his wide hand. What was he doing? His rough beard grazed her cheek as his lips lightly brushed against hers.

Her entire body tingled, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. The room spun and seemed to grow dim. As everything faded, she had a clear vision of wrapping her arms around Rothgar's neck and eagerly pulling him close for a kiss. Dizzy, she pitched forward. Rothgar caught her and clutched her to his chest.

"Shh," he soothed, running his hand through her loose hair. "I will not harm you, Odaria."

She relaxed against his broad chest, letting him support her weight. His touch was calming, and she felt safe here, leaning against Rothgar as she would rest against a thick tree. She inhaled deep. Rothgar didn't stink of rancid sweat like the other men. He smelled clean and salty, like the sea. The scent comforted her. She could almost fall asleep where she stood.

After a few moments, her dizzy spell passed, and she gazed at him. "You are not like the others. You are different, Rothgar."

He smiled. "Ja, in some ways. But fear not, Odaria. I will not share you with the others. I wish to have you all to myself." Rothgar chuckled and winked at her.

Excerpt:

Introduction: Following a terror attack in the city, Mona repeatedly attempts to call her husband.

In the bathroom, Mona closed her eyes, but the gruesome images kept playing in her head. The news channels had had a field day. ‘The children... the suicide bomber didn’t even spare the children!’ the newscasters had all yelled in unison. The whole street had worn a scene of helplessness: dead bodies covered in white sheets being carried away on stretchers toward the ambulances; every house on the street standing bereft of its windowpanes, multi-coloured curtains billowing out in the crisp March wind like a scene from a horror movie; shocked and dishevelled men pointing at a disintegrated mass of concrete and steel, which had just hours ago been the hidden office of some clandestine agency’s headquarters.

Reports coming in from the hospitals were also far from encouraging. The terrorists might never stop, they said. Not until they’ve destroyed Pakistan.

Mona sighed as she opened her eyes. Pakistan was under attack, and all the people in this house were concerned about was what to wear tomorrow. Rolling a wad of tissue paper over her index finger, she leaned toward the mirror, and tried to wipe the mascara that seemed to have leaked from around her eyes, but looking closely, she noticed that the blotches were actually dark circles. A solitary tear escaped her left eye and slid down her cheek, staining her pink chiffon kameez.

She had been crying a lot these past few months; each bomb blast shook her in a physical way, deepening her fear that the world was falling apart just like her marriage.

Opening her Chanel handbag, she rummaged inside for her Touche Eclat to hide the tear tracks. She had left her friends in the drawing room with their favourite Belgian chocolate and Brazil- imported coffee. It was imperative that she should join them soon, lest they started questioning her whole existence.

Inside the bag, her hand brushed against her iPhone. She hesitated before fishing it out.

No messages or missed calls.

For the tenth time that day, she dialled the same number. The line rang and rang. Mona tapped her foot on the hard stone floor. Suicide bombs and an absent husband... how had it all come to this? Reciting an Ayat from the Holy Quran, she took a deep breath, and blew it across the bathroom in an attempt to ward off evil.

Bilal picked up at the last ring. ‘What?’ he asked irritably.

Gripping the marble slab supporting the wash basin, she took a deep breath. ‘Where have you been?’

‘Work.’ Mona took another deep breath. ‘Why haven’t you called me back?’

‘What part of the word “work” didn’t you get?’

‘Typical, Bilal. Do you have any idea how terrified I’ve been?’ Her voice rose as she pronounced each syllable with force, something she knew Bilal hated. ‘Your secretary wouldn’t tell me anything! Do you realise a bomb just detonated in the city? And in our neighbourhood!’

Bilal tutted. ‘Saira is sitting right in front of me, and it’s not her fault. I’ve been busy, Mona, and for God’s sake, don’t make a fuss. You know how important this deal with the investors from Dubai is for me. I hardly ever check my phone these days.’

Mona lowered her voice knowing that it carried out of mobile phones, and that Saira would be trying to listen in, ever hungry for a stray crumb of gossip. at bitch. ‘But the bomb blast,’ she said quietly. ‘Surely you must have heard—’

Bilal cut her off. ‘Of course I heard, but I simply presumed that you were safe at home since I called Amma, and honestly the work here has been so hectic lately, I just...’ His voice tapered off as he realised his mistake. ‘Listen I—’
Mona forgot about Saira. ‘You called your mother, and didn’t even bother to check on me? What kind of a person are you? Do you even care about me? e country blows up, and that still doesn’t make me any more worthy of Bilal Sahab’s attention? I mean, I left you ten calls. Ten! And you didn’t see t to reply to any of them. Oh, but you had time to call your dear Amma.’

Bilal was silent. The sound of his deep breathing and the occasional rustle of papers in the background was the only indication that he was still on the line. After what seemed like ages, he replied, ‘Don’t tell me that all of a sudden you care, Mona
The line went dead.

Blood rushed to her face, her fingers still gripping the cold marble slab. Her hand had turned blue from the pressure, the white knuckles protruding out like giant hills while the rest of her body shook as if in extreme pain. Chucking the phone into her bag, she wiped her clammy hands on one of the imported towels she had had own in from Dubai. What a waste, she thought now. She threw it in the rubbish. Before a rogue sob could escape her mouth, she unlocked the door and went off to the drawing-room.

I Can’t Tell You Why
Elaine Robertson North

Dani and Alex are having an affair. He’s an actor, and married with children, and she’s his agent. They haven’t seen each other for a while and the dynamics of their relationship are about to change.

Two days later, Dani sat in a hotel foyer in a carefully chosen position so she would see Alex before he saw her. She was working on the assumption that her immediate reaction on seeing him would determine exactly how much trouble she was in and in her current position she would be able to recover, if necessary, before walking over to greet him.
Oh dear God am I in trouble, she thought, her heart going into a monumental spin as she watched Alex enter. And he was on time. It was getting worse by the minute. Get a grip, she urged herself, for God’s sake get a grip!  A thin film of sweat broke out on her palms and she felt physically sick. Meanwhile, valuable seconds were ticking by. As Dani stood up, Alex saw her and smiled and then he was in front of her.
“Hello stranger.”
“Hi,” was all she could manage as they stood there, eyes locked. For a moment, neither said a word until Alex decided it was up to him to take control. “I’ll just go and check in and then…..”
“Then we can have dinner. I booked us a table in the restaurant. I hope that was okay?”
Alex smiled at her. “Sure. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Dani was relieved they were given a quiet table away from the masses where conversation would be easier. It was hard to explain but as she watched him browse the menu, nothing else, indeed nobody else, seemed to exist. How does he do that? she wondered. How does he just walk in and take such control?
“Dani?” She hadn’t realised Alex was talking to her. “Is everything all right?” She had been staring somewhere in space, a slightly pained and anxious look on her face.
“Yes, of course.” She did her best to produce a relaxed, nonchalant smile. “I’m just deciding what to have.”
Alex continued to watch her and felt his stomach tighten. She looked uneasy but was trying so hard to looked poised and in control. Her obvious vulnerabilities just heightened the attraction, a side to her that he knew many never saw. She was undoubtedly a tough negotiator, a claim firmly substantiated by his latest contract but looking at her now, he found it almost impossible to imagine her around a table, taking command of proceedings, striking deals and making demands until she got what she wanted. As the familiar smell of her perfume slowly drifted across the table, he felt his breathing quicken. He had been so busy but she had never been far from his thoughts. He had missed her in a way he had never expected to.
The waiter arrived to take their order and then they were alone again. “So, are you ready for tomorrow?” Dani decided it was her turn to get the polite conversation rolling.
“I guess so. I’ve read the script anyway. That’s always a good start!”
“I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
Alex watched her look nervously around the room. “Dani, this is ridiculous!” She looked at him, her cheeks lightly dusted with an obvious glow of embarrassment. “Are we just going to chat politely all night, like strangers?” She said nothing. “I mean, it wasn’t all that long ago that we were in bed together! If it was a mistake then at least let’s talk about it. Anything but this bizarre civility.”
“Is that what it was? A mistake?”
“You know I don’t think that!” There was a rawness in Alex’s eyes and the intensity of his stare held Dani with such a fierceness, she felt momentarily suspended in time. “I just don’t feel in a position to apply any pressure. You know if I had my way we’d be upstairs now.”
“So it’s all up to me is it? I have to decide where we go from here? That hardly seems fair.”
Alex looked at her, aware that with every word spoken he was getting closer to his imaginary thin line. A line he had drawn up as some kind of naive protection that signified the difference between a degree of safety and that slippery slope to emotional involvement. “None of this is fair! We just have to talk about it and see whether or not we can find a way of doing this that works for you. Like I said, I’m not really in a position to make demands.”

Dani thought for a moment. If they were baring their souls then she might as well be completely honest. “Something’s changed.” She fidgeted slightly. “I’m seeing someone.”
