Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

THE LOST CAROUSEL OF PROVENCE by Juliet Blackwell

Historical Fiction
Women’s Fiction

An artist lost to history, a family abandoned to its secrets, and the woman whose search for meaning unearths it all in a sweeping and expressive story from the New York Times bestselling author of Letters from Paris.

Long, lonely years have passed for the crumbling Château Clement, nestled well beyond the rolling lavender fields and popular tourist attractions of Provence. Once a bustling and dignified ancestral estate, now all that remains is the château's gruff, elderly owner and the softly whispered secrets of generations buried and forgotten.

But time has a way of exposing history's dark stains, and when American photographer Cady Drake finds herself drawn to the château and its antique carousel, she longs to explore the relic's shadowy origins beyond the small scope of her freelance assignment. As Cady digs deeper into the past, unearthing century-old photographs of the Clement carousel and its creators, she might be the one person who can bring the past to light and reunite a family torn apart.

About the author
Juliet Blackwell (aka Julie Goodson-Lawes, aka Hailey Lind) started out life in Palo Alto, California, born of a Texan mother and a Yankee father. The family soon moved to what were, at the time, the sticks of Cupertino, an hour south of San Francisco. Walking to and from kindergarten every day she would indulge in her earliest larcenous activity: stealing walnuts and apricots from surrounding orchards.

By the time she graduated middle school, the orchards were disappearing and the valley at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay had become the cradle of the silicon semiconductor. A man named Steve Jobs was working in his garage in Cupertino, just down the street. Juliet's father advised his daughters to enter the lucrative and soon-to-flourish field of computers.

"Bah" said Juliet, as she went on to major in Latin American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (they had, by far, the best parties of any department). Rather than making scads of money in computers, she read, painted, learned Spanish and a little French and Vietnamese, lived in Spain and traveled through Europe, Mexico, and Central America. She had a very good time.

Juliet pursued graduate degrees in Anthropology and Social Work at the State University of New York at Albany, where she published several non-fiction articles on immigration as well as one book-length translation. Fascinated with other cultural systems, she studied the religions, folklore and medical beliefs of peoples around the world, especially in Latin America. Juliet taught the anthropology of health and health care at SUNY-Albany, and worked as an elementary school social worker in upstate New York. She also did field projects in Mexico and Cuba, studied in Spain, Italy, and France, worked on a BBC production in the Philippines, taught English as a second language in San Jose, and learned how to faux finish walls in Princeton, New Jersey. After having a son, moving back to California, and abandoning her half-written dissertation in cultural anthropology, Juliet started painting murals and portraits for a living. She has run her own mural/faux finish design studio in Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco, for more than a decade. She specializes in the aesthetic renovation of historic homes.

Finally, to round out her tour of lucrative careers, Juliet turned to writing. Under the pseudonym of Hailey Lind, Juliet penned the Art Lover's Mystery Series with her sister Carolyn, about an ex-art forger trying to go straight by working as a muralist and faux finisher in San Francisco. The first of these, Feint of Art, was nominated for an Agatha Award; Shooting Gallery and Brush with Death were both IMBA bestsellers, and Arsenic and Old Paint is now available from Perseverance Press.

Juliet's Witchcraft Mystery series, about a witch who finally finds a place to fit in when she opens a vintage clothes shop on Haight Street in San Francisco, allows Juliet to indulge yet another interest—the world of witchcraft and the supernatural. Ever since her favorite aunt taught her about reading cards and tea leaves, Juliet has been fascinated with seers, conjurers, and covens from many different cultures and historic traditions. As an anthropologist, the author studied and taught about systems of spirituality, magic, and medicine throughout the world, especially in Latin America. Halloween is by far her favorite holiday.

When not writing, painting, or haranguing her funny but cynical teenaged son, Juliet spends a lot of time restoring her happily haunted house and gardening with Oscar the cat, who ostensibly belongs to the neighbors but won't leave her alone. He started hanging around when Juliet started writing about witches...funny coincidence.

My Review
The Lost Carousel of Provence is a historical fiction novel about the old carousels in France. Cady Drake, the principal character, is a photographer who was brought up in the foster system and has no family. Passed from family to family and always in trouble, she did end up living with an elderly woman, Maxine, who taught her how to restore antique items. She has an obsession with carousels that leads her to Paris and to the Chateau Clement where a grumpy elderly man, Fabrice Clement, lives. Cady comes to the chateau with the idea to restore the carousel that she finds there.

Other characters in the novel are:

Fabrice Clement (1945) Fabrice is a cantankerous old man who lives in the chateau, whom family disputes actually belongs to him. Fabrice has guilt that he is living with about something he did as a teenager during the war.

Maelle Tanguy (1900) Maelle is a young woman who is a wood carver who is given a position as a domestic servant to Gustave Bayol, the original carver of the carousels. She desperately wants to be a carver, that is what she lives for. She forges a friendship with Josephine, the wife of Gustave. She becomes embroiled in deceit that leads her to a series of life choices.

Jean-Paul, present day, is the nephew of Fabrice who wants to restore the Chateau to its glory days, but that takes money and Fabrice is adamant that the Chateau not be sold. He acts as the go between with her and Fabrice. Fabrice wants nothing to do with Jean-Paul.

The story is told in different characters point of view and also in different eras. I found the story to be fascinating, I never knew anything about carousels. The author's descriptions and characterizations made this book very readable. The reader learns about Cady's early life, Maelle's relationships and her desire to be a carver, and what happened to Fabrice during the war that makes him such an unhappy man. Can Cady help seal the rift between the family members? Well you will just have to get a copy and read it!

I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it if you are into historical fiction and WWII.

I received a copy of the book for review.

Release Date: 4th September 2018
Genre: Historical
Publisher: Clink Street Publishing

Summary: Christian-born Paul Plantavalu and his beloved Alisha al Komaty, a Muslim, share an unbreakable bond and a deep love for one another. Religion, war and politics oppose them at every turn. But most deadly of all is the resolve of an evil enemy determined to destroy their family lines forever.
Paul and Alisha’s journey takes a political turn; they must question everything and learn who to fear and who to trust as they continue their battle to safeguard the future of mankind. In accepting the burden of this grace responsibility, they must make peace with the difficult path they have chosen. Paul will struggle to unlearn everything he has been raised to accept as true; reality is much more mysterious and nuanced. It will fall to him to defend a much greater treasure than his own life - one which the Magi themselves understood - for the benefit of future generations. In doing so, Paul will help others to unshackle themselves from the grip of a self-styled secret elite with the power to manipulate religions, governments and monarchies, harnessing wealth and control for themselves at the expense of the populous. But to succeed in this challenge Paul must face his own desires and his worst fears, and if destiny dictates, he may be called to sacrifice his own family, including Alisha.
The second novel in author and adventurer D. N. Carter’s epic four-part series, Outremer II: Revelation Cometh draws upon forty years of intensive historical research by its Indiana Jones-style creator. As the reader is swept up by the romantic adventure of Paul and Alisha and their dazzling romp through the High Middle Ages in search of Templar truths and treasure, they are also challenged by the author to solve a coded puzzle hidden within the pages of the four Outremer novels, which will lead to a real-life bounty at the conclusion of the series!

Paul and Theodoric walked out into the castle’s main courtyard to be greeted by several Frankish Knights and several Templar sergeants manhandling a caravan twice the size of Paul’s, with four large wheels up against the side of the main Keep wall. Despite the late hour, the courtyard was still a frenzy of activity. Paul breathed in the salty sea air and looked up to see many stars sparkling brightly, the nearly full moon directly above him. He looked ahead as he heard women laughing. To his front, he saw Princess Stephanie and Sister Lucy along with two of her maids walking towards the large caravan, Brother Teric leading them.
“Looks like you will have your privacy back tonight now her new caravan has arrived,” Theodoric said quietly, patted him on his arm and walked away giving a slight backhand wave. “See you in the morning.”
Paul’s ears began to ring with a high pitched whine and he sensed a humming vibration. His first thought was that another earthquake was about to happen. Quickly he went to move but found he could not. He felt frozen. His heart began to race as everything turned to silence. His vision began to blur. ‘What is happening?’ he asked himself, alarmed. He could sense his sword as if it was pulsing. Suddenly he was bathed in a brilliant white light that cut out all his vision. As he blinked and tried to see properly, he started to see what looked like the huge stone lintels from his dreams. Images of people slowly walking through the stones, formed like a doorway, and vanishing. A tall white haired man stood next to the stones and turned his gaze to look at him. Images of the Kizkalesi castle merged at times with the stones like an overlay. Paul instinctively knew he was seeing the same place but at a different time.
“Remember me?” the white haired man said without moving his lips.
Paul fought to move but was completely paralysed. Was he having some kind of seizure? Had he eaten something bad that Balian had given him? Was Alisha okay? As soon as he thought that, he saw her step into view. She was wearing the same cream and white dress as he had seen the woman wear in his dreams. Her dark hair blew back across her shoulders as she looked at him. She smiled and slightly raised her eyebrows to acknowledge him. He tried to call her name but nothing came out. She looked at the white haired man, who gestured she should walk through the stone gateway. She smiled once more at Paul and slowly turned her back on him and walked through. The white haired man then waved, smiled and followed her and vanished. Suddenly and without warning, a massive roar filled Paul’s head as a black wall of water and debris hit the stones obliterating them instantly.
Paul recoiled in panic, drew a deep breath, his eyes wide as the bright white light just vanished instantly leaving him standing alone on tip toes, rigid. He gasped for breath then coughed out as he tried to stand up properly, feeling dizzy. As the vision in his eyes returned, the courtyard was silent apart from someone snoring loudly off in the distance. A lone Templar stood watch at the open entrance to the castle. The small campfires that had been burning when he came out were now just smouldering embers. Adrastos snorted nearby drawing his attention. Paul looked around, confused. He looked up. The moon was now almost setting behind the castle wall. He looked at his hands, and then felt for his sword. It was still there. ‘Ali’ he thought, alarmed, and began to walk as fast as he could towards his caravan. His feet feeling heavy.
Inside the caravan, he found Alisha safely tucked up in the main bunk bed asleep with Arri wrapped up in swaddling next to her. The moon shone as if sitting on the castle wall, directly into the caravan. He sighed heavily with relief but still confused. He shook his head. He had not drunk anything but water. If he had passed out or fallen asleep, surely someone would have woken him or checked he was okay. His mind raced as he fought to remain rational. He had seen for real, or so it seemed, what he had so often dreamt of. However, this time, the woman was without any doubt Alisha. He looked at her as she slept. He slumped back exhausted onto the wide bench seat, rested his head back and closed his eyes. Quickly he opened them again fearful of another experience…but eventually tiredness enveloped him completely.

EXCERPT
Before Julie placed her purse on the desk, Leanne handed her three phone messages, two from Gary and one from a local reporter.
“Oh, and I thought you might want to read this,” Leanne handed over an article printed off the Internet. “After your meeting with Bennett Burnside, I remembered reading this from two years ago.”
The story recounted the case of a family from Georgia. The parents of a ten-year-old had won $100,000 in compensatory damages and $9.9 million in punitive damages in a lawsuit against MaxOut Toys. The suit claimed their son permanently lost partial use of his right hand after playing with BlastAway, a handheld video game manufactured by the start-up company. The article read in part:

“Because of their negligence, this young lad is unable to perform any of the normal activities a boy of ten would enjoy,” their attorney said, arguing that MaxOut management knew the dangers of overuse of their product and was required to provide consumer warnings. “Young Benji is now designated as a special needs student. On the Little League field, Benji can’t pitch, play first base, or even bat properly.”

Julie remembered Mort Gunther’s appeal to the ruling. An appellate court upheld the original judgment, forcing the fledgling toy manufacturer to file for bankruptcy.
Funny. She hadn’t seen Mort since he lost his company…until he introduced her to Bennett Burnside.
Leanne handed Julie a copy of another news item dated months later from the Global Business Briefs section of the Wall Street Journal, announcing Game Masters’ acquisition of bankrupt MaxOut Toys for an undisclosed amount.
An icy surge ran down Julie’s back. She set the papers on Leanne’s desk and clenched the journalist’s phone message in her hand.
Roberta Perkins, San Marcel Mercury News. Please call before 2:00 p.m.
Julie recognized the name and the same byline on the patent-infringement lawsuit article.
While placing the call, Julie licked her lips, a nervous habit she had since a child, waiting for the phone to connect.
“Ms. Rafferty, thank you for returning my call.” Roberta Perkins’s monotone voice replied. Julie pictured her more as a Helen Thomas-style journalist than a wide-eyed Lois Lane.
“An unnamed source on the San Marcel Narcotics Task Force claims the US attorney’s office is requesting a court order to confiscate your company files. Would you care to comment?”
Julie collapsed in her chair, her legs no longer able to support her. “What did you say?”
“Is FunWorks actually a front for money-laundering?”
“I don’t understand the question,” Julie said, her voice shaking.
“It’s the first step before the Narcotics Task Force initiates an investigation,” the reporter said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Nervous energy soared through Julie’s veins. “The Narcotics Task Force? What is this all about?”
“The task force received a tip that FunWorks launders money for drug traffickers.”
“What a ridiculous allegation.” Julie’s pulse quickened, and her hand flew to the silver crucifix dangling on a thin chain around her neck. She fingered the cross and took in a deep breath.
“May I quote you?”
“Quote me? For what?”
“For the article I’m working on. You did know you are under investigation?”
Julie didn’t respond.
“In my experience, allegations of federal law violations are taken very seriously by the United States Attorney, especially Del Evans’s office,” Roberta said, suddenly sounding supportive. “If I were you, I’d call my attorney.”
“I have no comment about the allegation,” Julie managed to say. “I will remind you, though, that a libel suit can be very expensive. In my experience, newspaper publishers fire irresponsible writers whose sloppy work costs them money.” Julie disconnected the call and threw the cordless phone across the room.
Now those jerks had gone too far.
She retrieved her phone.
Twenty minutes later, after waiting on hold, a clerk in US Attorney Del Evans’s office informed her that Mr. Evans was unable to take her call. The clerk couldn’t say anything about the allegations, but she confirmed that contacting a lawyer would be a good idea.
“How long do these investigations take?” Julie asked.
“Hard to say,” the droning voice replied. “Every case is unique. When it’s connected to money, sometimes the IRS and the DEA get involved.”
Julie held the phone receiver near her ear for a minute or two listening to the dial tone.
The IRS and the DEA?
Burnside wanted FunWorks so much, he sicced the Feds on me. Why?

That Which Must Happen tackles the theme of fate.
Not to be understood as a series of immutable events leading to a predetermined destination, rather, as a series of interconnected events which can be influenced by our choices.

Author Bio (Lanza Sebastiano)
Author of That Which Must Happen, currently working on more novels.
Born and bred in Italy, which must be why I love good food.
Passionate about non-linear storytelling, labyrinthine plots, and mise en abyme (amidst others), which feature heavily in my works.
After all, it's not by chance I take great pleasure from thinking for hours on end about what's rather important.
I also adore impossible challenges, if nothing else for their paradoxical nature. Nothing is impossible.
