Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Lady Reaper

Lincoln – Age Seventeen

Boom!

Thunder rends the air as the farmhouse magically house lifts higher into the sky. I race away from Dal and Walker, skidding to a stop under the building. Broken pipes and steel rods dangle above my head, creating a mosaic of destruction that is the home’s new base.

I imagine my baculum igniting into a grappling hook and a line of hefty rope. White fire erupts around the baculum rods, creating a four-pronged grappling hook and loops of blazing cord.

A weight of worry settles inside me. Angelfire doesn’t burn me unless I grasp it for too long. Climbing up to that house could take a while. Pulling battle gloves from my pocket, I slip them on. With any luck, the extra layer will give me enough time.

Holding the grappling hook in my right hand, I track the speed of the house. At the right moment, I toss the hook; it latches onto a low-hanging pipe. Yes.

The line of angelfire dangles before me. I grasp the fiery rope and test its strength. Good enough

I climb.

I pull myself up the fiery rope toward the farmhouse. My arms strain from effort. The faint scent of burning tar fills the air as my gloves burn. Wind howls in my ears, along with Austin’s frightened cries.

The house rises even higher. A jolt of worry moves through me. Humans will notice this building soon. If that happens, the best-case scenario means my people must track down any spectators and magically wipe their memories. In the worst case, humans will destroy the house and all inside.

Gritting my teeth, I push myself harder. The scent of burning tar fades as my gloves burn away. Pain sears across my palms and legs as the angelfire burns my flesh.

At last, I reach the top of the angelfire rope. With my left hand, I grasp the baculum within the fiery grappling hook. At the same time, my right hand clasps onto a low-hanging pipe. I imagine my baculum extinguishing. The rods become two silver bars in my left hand. I reset the weapon into a holster. With both arms free, I swing across the base of the house, going from one sketchy-looking handhold to the next.

At last, I reach the spot where the house’s base meets a wall. From here, I punch through the rotted wood and create a handhold. Hauling myself up, I scale the wall to the nearest window.

With one final effort, I sling myself through the opened window and inside the building itself. I land in a large front room. It’s mostly empty, save for a few papers and sleeping bags. As expected, Bill, Daisy, and Austin are also here. Bill is a barrel-chested man with a shaved head. Austin appears to be a miniature version of his father. Daisy is stout and pretty with long dark braids and a turned-up nose. They’re all dressed in classic human style, which means jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

They stare at me with looks of wide-eyed terror.

The Nanny Factor! Is there something more going on between Actor Kingston Grier and his new nanny? Stay tuned…

Kingston: Who knew it would be such a challenge finding a nanny who could focus on my daughter without getting sidetracked by trying to get into my bed? I can’t even make eye contact without them thinking I’m flirting. I’m not.

Until Briar arrives, and finally we have a nanny who’s there for Zoe. But why does this Mary Poppins have to be so damn hot?

Briar: My divorce left me with more than my share of trust issues. Not that I’m looking at my new boss that way. Kingston might be a Hollywood hunk, but the guy has the personality of a potato. His daughter couldn’t be more different. One look into her doe eyes, and I am in love.

Somehow Kingston and I go from barely speaking to talking all night long. And our attraction becomes impossible to deny. Just when everything’s finally going right, intimate pictures of us are leaked and the fallout is insane. When I signed up for this job, I knew I’d do anything to protect Zoe—I just never expected how much I’d want to fight for King.

SNEAK PEEK:

I almost stepped on Briar before I saw her.

Curled up on the floor next to Zoe’s bed, Briar was fast asleep, her hand curled around the bed frame next to Zoe’s head. The two of them snored softly in rhythm. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight. Zoe was a handful at bedtime. She never wanted to sleep. I think she was afraid she’d miss something big.

But I knew from experience just how uncomfortable the floor in Zoe’s room was. I couldn’t let Briar sleep all night there.

I leaned down and gently shook her shoulder.

Briar groaned and curled into herself.

Damn, that was cute.

And not something I should be thinking.

Annoyed at myself, I shook her shoulder a little harder.

She curled away from me again.

I was debating between leaving her or picking her up when she opened her eyes and gasped. She sat up and moved to put herself between me and Zoe before I could reassure her.

“Briar, it’s me,” I whispered. “I didn’t think you wanted to sleep all night on the floor.”

“Oh. King.” Her hand came up and pressed against the center of her chest. “You scared me.”

I tried not to notice how the movement pulled her shirt to outline her tits or the fact that she clearly wasn’t wearing a bra. Damn. Shaking my head, I muttered, “Sorry.”

I didn’t know if I was apologizing for scaring her or for my un-boss-like thoughts.

“Zoe wouldn’t fall asleep tonight.” Briar lurched to her feet and blearily brushed at her tiny sleep shorts that I definitely wasn’t looking at. “I guess I fell asleep waiting for her to fall asleep.”

I smiled and pivoted from Briar to Zoe’s softly snoring little body. “Yeah, I’ve been there. Some nights it’s just easier to let her sleep in my bed. I know she’s supposed to sleep on her own, but I just can’t do the back and forth all night long. I need to sleep too.”

“You’re a good dad.”

My eyes snapped back to Briar, and I shrugged. “Some days it doesn’t feel like that. My publicist was just telling me a good dad would… Never mind. Anyway, you don’t have to sleep on the floor tonight if you don’t want to. You should get to bed.”

I took one last look at my sleeping daughter then headed for the door. I’d gotten a few feet down the hall when Briar’s quiet, “Wait,” stopped me.

I turned and found her standing behind me with her arms crossed over her chest. She bit her lip, then shook her head. “Please don’t let anyone ever let you think you’re not a good dad. You do everything you can for your daughter, and I’m not talking about monetarily. You put in the time. She knows you and loves you—wants to be with you. And that’s what makes you a great dad. Anyone who says otherwise has ulterior motives. Or they don’t know you.” Her cheeks turned pink as she looked away. “I’m not saying that I know you. Because I don’t. But I’ve seen all kinds of parents. And you’re definitely one of the good ones.”

“Thanks, Briar. That means a lot.”

And it did. Being a parent was so hard, especially since I was doing this on my own. I didn’t even have the best example from my parents—past or present. They’d divorced when we were in elementary school and then used us as weapons against each other. I couldn’t remember the last time I saw, or even spoke to, either of them.

“Right. Well. I should be getting to bed. Zoe gets up early.”

“Me too. Although I should’ve told you, I have a later call time tomorrow, so I get to have breakfast with you guys in the morning.”

Briar beamed. “Great.” She flushed and shook her head. “I mean, Zoe will be so happy to see you. She’ll be thrilled.”

I hitched a shoulder. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

“’Night.”

“’Night,” I repeated, taking a step back in the direction of my bedroom.

And yet I lingered and watched Briar walk away in the opposite direction toward her room at the other end of the hall.

Not that I noticed how her tiny sleep shorts clung to her heart shaped ass.

Because that wasn’t something I would do.

Poems Grown in Sunlight or Poisoned Ground

Recently, a friend asked me to read the poetry of his 16-year-old daughter and tell him, not her, what I thought about it. He wanted to filter my comments, remove any possible toxins. I agreed. I never say no to almost any request. Have a cat to bury? Sure, no problem. I’ll grab my shovel. But reading the poetry of a teenager and then giving my opinion to her dad as to its quality, well, that’s a scarier proposition than digging a grave at night in Stephen King’s Pet Sematary.

Who am I to judge someone’s poetry? I’m insecure about my own. I write what I feel, try to shape thoughts into dark or colorful imagery conveying perceptions that hopefully are authentic and spoken with a true voice, but in reality, maybe all I’m creating is just a hollowness reverberating nowhere but in my own mind. I am not a trained poet, just someone who arrogantly believes his few words, sprinkled like magical dust on a page, can conjure truth.

Am I a long-bearded castaway mumbling the words I hacked into a coconut tree, cackling and knowing I’m a genius as the tropical sun further melts my brain? Am I someone living in internal landscapes haunted by the past, poems a way to drive a stake into the heart of demons? How can I tell a bright, talented teenage poet with perceptive insights and wise philosophical thoughts that her words haven’t bled enough?

I won’t.

For the fortunate, art doesn’t require suffering, but emotion transformed by imagination into the meaningful.

I have been entrusted with the artistry of a young soul.  I will report to her father that I found his daughter’s poetry remarkable for her age then bolster this generality with a specific: I read her poems at a family gathering. Everyone there loved what she had written. They didn’t ask for pain. They didn’t ask for blood. They found the innocence and beauty in words relatable to their own lives.

She was the poet.

They smiled knowingly at me, a wanderer in a labyrinth of my own truths, in a cemetery where nothing stays buried because I am (gratefully) compelled to resurrect all the decomposing corpses in my life, give each a story, and walk with them alone toward retribution or understanding before the final bell tolls midnight.

I live in Northern Utah with my wonderful husband and our rambunctious toddler. We’re a family that likes to be on the go, so you’ll probably find us at the zoo, on a hike, or out for a run together. The only thing Brand hated more than the theater was the kind of people who attended it, and the Vicari family estate was currently swarming with actors and theatergoers alike. He was utterly and completely surrounded by the sort of people who liked to talk at you and be looked at rather than have a proper conversation, and it was taking all his willpower not to jump out the nearest window.

Instead, he took a deep breath and wove his way carefully through the buzzing crowd to the back of the ballroom to settle in to watch and wait, hoping his sour mood didn’t show clearly on his face. He relaxed his jaw and shoulders and smoothed his features into a placid, nonthreatening smile. He glanced around the room, taking in everything from the glittering mirrored ceiling tiles to the gilded flatware. One spoon from the set could probably be sold for a common fortune back home. He briefly considered pocketing one or a dozen but decided against it. He had bigger fish to fry tonight.

He watched the crowd, noting who was in attendance and who was absent. It was a bit like being inside a glittering, smothering hive. It smelled of strong perfume, sweat, and people with too much money. He suppressed a sneeze and clenched his teeth.

His annoyance was partially due to resentment, he knew. These were essentially well-paid liars, and while he did not draw a wage for a similar practice, it had kept him alive these past two years. Still, he would rather be caught red-handed in some scheme than sitting in an audience waiting for a bunch of fancy folk to flit about a stage. And yet, here he was, alive and well enough, though he could certainly use a sandwich.

Brand wasn’t here to watch the show, exactly, but he was here to watch the people. And there were plenty of people to watch. He was at the back of the large ballroom-turned-theater, and thanks to his substantial height, he could easily see over the heads of the teeming, mostly female attendees. He paid particular attention to the pair of stately women seated front and center, surrounded by servants and platters full of finger foods, tiny cakes, and wine glasses.

Marienne Bromende, the aging duchess of the Grand Duchy of Felidereaux, with her daughter, retinue, and many servants, had come to the Vicari barony for the first time in nearly ten years for this special performance by the famed Vicari siblings—a trio of exceptionally talented young fire elementalists. The performance would, purportedly, showcase the family’s magical prowess as thanks for her continued royal patronage.

At least, that was the official reason. Brand knew the real reason. Everyone did, if gossip among the common quarter held any scrap of truth (and it often did). The real, actual reason the duchess was parading her twice-bonded-and-bailed daughter around the countryside? The real reason she had traveled outside her prim and proper circle in the royal palace for the first time in over two decades?

Pure, undiluted desperation.

The duchess was on a manhunt. After two failed marriages, her daughter had yet to produce a child. There was quite a wealth of hearsay as to the reason for that predicament, some rumors more ridiculous than others, but Brand suspected a very simple explanation. In his experience, the virility of Feliderean men had certainly left something to be desired. Needless to say, the future of the continuation of the duchy’s royal line was in a bucketload of trouble.

Therefore, the noble families of Felidereaux were pulling out all the stops to put every one of their eligible young men on display for this very purpose, including the young, talented, and supposedly very eligible bachelor, Valentino Vicari.

This theater performance was a thinly veiled exhibition of availability—a marketplace set up to sell a single man. An auction block with an orchestra. Brand found it equal parts hilarious and uniquely upsetting. Yet, he was here on a manhunt of his own too.

The crowd of fluttering nobles and harried servants going in and out of the house all evening had made it easy to slip in relatively unnoticed. A couple of slicked palms, a borrowed uniform, a couple of well-placed nods and practiced grins, and he was inside the estate. He ducked into an alcove at the side of the cavernous room, just out of sight of the bored-looking guards placed at the doorway.

SNEAK PEEK:

It was nearing sunrise on the fifth day. The twilight teasing the flap of the tent. The birds were only beginning to sing, and though the music of the birds waking and the river beyond were usually her salve to get her moving, her eyes were so heavy, and her body weighted with exhaustion. Her mind and senses lulled toward sleep by the sound of Ollie’s clear breathing and the song of the birds, so she shut her eyes.

Just for a moment, she told herself. Ollie’s safe. I’ll rest. Just for a moment, she thought and slipped into the rest of the darkness.

“Tarley?”

She stretched her body, uncurling it, and basking in the gloriousness of warmth and rest. Her hand dropped against something unforgiving, her head pressed against a wall. She moaned, disoriented, and grabbed hold of the mound under her quilt trying to figure out what had crawled into bed with her.

“I’ve always enjoyed a good fondling, but I prefer it being reciprocal.”

Tarley’s eyes snapped open at the foreign sound—a man’s voice with just the hint of an accent with which she wasn’t familiar. Skin. That’s what her eyes focused on. Lots of it. An arm. A shoulder. A scruffy jaw in need of a shave as she raised her gaze. Full lips arched with a smile, the bottom slightly fuller though the pronounced arches of the upper. He was grinning, and his eyes—a myriad of colors—were darkened with a ring of deep green at the edges.

Realizing she was flush against him, holding him, Tarley jerked back, scrambling to the opposite side of the ten, only there wasn’t enough room to maneuver. She regretted the quick movement, her body protesting with aches and pains of not enough sleep.

“Ollie. I–” She couldn’t meet his gaze.

“You were asleep.”

Her cheeks heated realizing she’d been holding him in her sleep. Holding onto him the night she’d been trying to save him flashed in her mind reminding her she’d held him before. To save him, she snapped at her inner self.

Her eyes danced across the quilt until she found the bravery to meet his gaze.

Body Snatched by Ana Diamond Book Blast!

What’s worse than losing a body from a funeral home? Losing two. But mortician and amatuer sleuth, Lily Reynolds has a hunch. The new visitor in town, Rick Drakon, may have charmed his way into her life but she’s not fooled by his smooth talking ways. Problem is, Rick is a long-time friend of Lily’s new husband, Detective James Rivers. While James is busy convincing her to look elsewhere, Lily embarks on a dangerous path toward uncovering the truth. Will this case come between the couple or will Lily find herself closer to evil than ever before?

Read an Excerpt

She sprinted toward the ambulance with James inside. Her heart leaped into her throat. She didn’t want to alarm the others, but she didn’t really know if he was going to make it. Antonio had not. And what would she do if he didn’t? Images of her life with James flashed before her eyes.

From the moment when she’d first laid eyes on his silky black hair and tattooed biceps in the basement of her funeral home to their wedding day when he told her they would be together forever, this could not be the end. She would not want to go on. Tears flooded her eyes, clouding her vision as she ran toward the ambulance James had been loaded into. Yanking the back door open wide, she propelled herself inside.

His eyes were closed but his body had been hooked up to monitors that beeped incessantly. Intravenous fluids ran down the tubing and into James’s arms. And there was blood—lots of blood on the floor of the truck and on the linens of the stretcher. She willed herself into tunnel vision to avoid seeing nothing but red. The paramedics sat on opposite sides of the ambulance monitoring the machines hooked up to him.

She stood at the foot of the stretcher watching for any movement. Was he unconscious? Had he slipped into a coma? Was he only minutes from death? She’d stopped breathing altogether until she touched his leg and his eyes popped open.

“You know, this is the first time I’ve ever been shot.” His eyes sparkled with mischief.

She released the air from her lungs and chuckled at him. Her heart could beat again. “Congratulations. I’ll tell you what you’ve won later. Now work on not dying.”

He smiled and laid his head back on the pillow. “Yes, ma’am.”

Nick’s serious about his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract.

Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.

What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into the equation? A future designed by destiny.

“I’d like to apologize for my behavior last night.”

Her breath hitched. “You didn’t need my opinion on a project, did you?”

Sheepishly, he cast her an apologetic look. “Sorry to bring you here on false pretenses.”

She tensed, leaning deeper into the chair, the only direction that increased the distance between them. Nicholas had a reputation—didn’t all eligible, grossly rich bachelors? But still? He wouldn’t have brought her here to assault her. Sherrie knew they were together. She was an employee for goodness’ sake. A stupid, naïve—

“Whatever you’re thinking, stop.”

“Mr. Grey?”

“Call me Nick.” He offered her a lopsided grin. “I think we’re a bit past those formalities.”

“Nick.”

His lips curled into a genuine smile, crinkling lines beside his eyes, making him look older than she’d guessed. “There is no excuse for my—” He ran his fingers through his hair, giving him a rumpled, boyish look. “I practically attacked you last night. In my defense, I have no defense.”

She chuckled, relaxing her shoulders. Nick was nothing like she’d imagined. She found him even more attractive, if that was possible.

“The gentleman is a perspective client, the project could be the company’s largest, the one to put Grey & Company on the map.”

He was rambling, so she sat, holding back her impatience, quietly waiting for him to get to the point.

“He—and his shareholders—expressed concerns with, er, my personal life. Apparently, my reputation preceded me. And not in a good way.” He grinned sardonically. “So, I invented a fiancée.” He stopped talking, watching her like he was waiting for a response.

She wrinkled her eyebrows together. “I really don’t see what that has to do with me—”

“I told him you were my fiancée.”

Length: 1 hr, 16 minutes
Genre:  Cozy Mystery

A lovely cameo brooch is discovered in Fiona’s late Uncle Wilbur’s house two days before Christmas. The pin bears a romantic Christmas message from Wilbur for his new wife with the initials, D.A.S.
How very strange! To the family’s knowledge, Uncle Wilbur had never been married. So, who is this mysterious woman? Now, Fiona is on a holiday mission to locate D.A.S. and deliver the belated gift.
Question is, what happened to the marriage? Is D.A.S. still alive after all these years? And if so, can Fiona find her before Christmas?

For twenty-six years C.S. McDonald’s life whirled around a song and a dance. Classically trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and many others, she became a professional dancer and choreographer. During that time, she choreographed many musicals and an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards. In 2011 she retired from her dance career to write. Under her real name, Cindy McDonald, she writes murder-suspense and romantic suspense novels. In 2014 she added the pen name, C.S. McDonald, to write children’s books for her grandchildren. In 2016 she added the Fiona Quinn Mysteries to that expansion. She decided to write the cozy mystery series that everyone, including teens and tweens, can read and enjoy. Presently, the Fiona Quinn Mysteries includes nine books with a tenth slated for 2021. The books are also available on audio, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg.

Cindy’s newest venture is The Owl’s Nest Mysteries. Once again, she has set her cozy mystery in Pittsburgh and the female protagonist, Alexa Owl, is much different from Fiona Quinn. The Owl’s Nest Mysteries has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lot of cozy!

Ms. McDonald resides on her Thoroughbred farm known as Fly by Night Stables near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister.
